Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, confused by the dream. Wang Lun participates in a wilderness survival challenge and is placed in the same team with the person he likes.

From then on, ...

Chapter 40 Damn Ritual

After daybreak, almost all the teams were engaged in their own tasks. After breakfast, Wang Lun and Li Ling continued their work: Wang Lun dug the earth, while Li Ling built the wall. The Liu sisters, as usual, skipped breakfast or cooked some wild vegetable soup before continuing to forage for wild vegetables all over the mountains. Other teams were busy searching for wild vegetables, checking traps, or reinforcing their shelters. Only Wu Jing and her companion were different; they were returning to camp.

The two walked across the vast grassland, relying solely on the tracks they had left the day before to find their way. Wu Jing led the way, with Zhang Shengnan following behind. Suddenly, Wu Jing gestured for Zhang Shengnan to stop. Zhang Shengnan immediately stopped, picked up her bow, and nocked an arrow, ready to shoot at any moment. Wu Jing then instructed Zhang Shengnan to quietly approach, pointing to an antelope grazing in the distance, her eyes asking if Zhang Shengnan was confident she could hit it. Zhang Shengnan looked, estimated the distance, and nodded. Wu Jing gestured with her hand, counting down from three, at which point Zhang Shengnan would shoot, and Wu Jing would immediately rush forward. Zhang Shengnan nodded, indicating she understood. Then, Wu Jing gestured with her right hand, three, two, one; as soon as the "one" was finished, Zhang Shengnan's arrow shot out, and Wu Jing seemed to follow along with it. The poor antelope, still grazing, was struck by an arrow from Zhang Shengnan. The antelope tried to run away, but before it could take two steps, Wu Jing caught up and slashed its leg with a knife, causing it to collapse immediately. Then, Wu Jing pierced the antelope's neck with her knife. The antelope twitched twice and then lay still. Wu Jing stopped pressing down on the antelope and grabbed a handful of soil from the surrounding ground to cover the wound, reducing the smell of blood. At this moment, Zhang Shengnan caught up. Wu Jing said, "We have to go back quickly. The smell of blood here is too strong and might attract predators." Zhang Shengnan understood, so Wu Jing carried the antelope, while Zhang Shengnan led the way with her machete.

Both were lucky; no predators followed them all the way to the camp. Upon arrival, they immediately began dissecting the antelope. Since it had been going on for quite some time and most of the blood had been drained, they stopped bleeding it. Wu Jing then used a military knife to skin the antelope, and after some time, the hide was removed. Zhang Shengnan took the hide, carefully processed it, and then used a tripod to secure it. Wu Jing processed the remaining internal organs and meat. Soon, they had finished processing the antelope. Wu Jing put the inedible parts in a basket, intending to bury them near a water source when they went to fetch water. They hung the meat up together and then prepared to go fetch water, washing the blood off their hands in the process.

Upon reaching the water source, Zhang Shengnan washed her hands and cleaned the entrails from their lunch. Wu Jing dug a pit nearby and buried everything that couldn't be eaten in it. After cleaning up the bloodstains on their bodies, the two returned to camp. Of course, the bloodstains on their bodies could be washed off, but the bloodstains on their clothes couldn't be removed.

Back at camp, the two first cooked a pot of offal soup, ate their fill, and combined it with lunch. Then they prepared to rest. Unbeknownst to them, a pack of hyenas had discovered the spot on the grassland where they had hunted the antelope and were following the trail of blood.

On the hillside, the Liu sisters skipped breakfast and went straight to dig for wild vegetables, continuing until the sun was almost overhead before returning home. They prepared a simple lunch, and after eating, the two sisters decided to focus on building their treehouse. As for hunting, they weren't short of food yet, so they could do it tomorrow. Together, they went to the stream and cut down many bushes, carrying the branches and leaves to their campsite. They also went into the jungle to cut some thicker branches to use as the roof frame.

The two prepared all the materials, and about three hours had passed. Then Liu Ruoling went up to work on the last wall, while Liu Ruoxi below trimmed the branches used for the roof frame, cutting them to the appropriate sizes. After they finished, they tied the roof frame together and then fixed the branches onto it. This took them nearly two more hours, and finally, a complete treehouse was finished.

The treehouse's base was about three meters above the ground, supported by several thick branches and some wooden sticks. There was a door and a window at the front, with walls about two meters high and the roof reaching about three meters. Outside the door was a small terrace about 70-80 centimeters wide, currently without railings. The roof was triangular, higher in the middle and lower at the sides, constructed entirely of thick, leafy twigs, appearing quite waterproof. With the canopy of four trees above providing some shelter from the rain, very little rainwater reached the treehouse area. The interior was about four meters long and three meters wide, totaling about twelve square meters, roughly enough for the two sisters to live in. A corner held some feathers, and on the wall near the window hung their hunted game. Next to it were dried wild vegetables, and opposite them was a haystack with a sleeping bag on top. The entire treehouse exuded a natural atmosphere and a sense of tranquility.

By this time, the sun was already setting. The two sisters rested for a while before going to the stream to wash up and fetch water. It would be dark soon, and they wouldn't go out after dark. After fetching water, they cooked a wild vegetable soup with a bird in it—prepared and chopped, of course. Then they took out the last two rabbit legs and roasted them. Liu Ruoling was startled, thinking Liu Ruoxi wasn't planning on living together anymore, but of course, she was pretending. Liu Ruoxi said, "We should have a good meal today since the house is finished. Besides, we have the means to eat well now, so we should definitely live well. If we don't have the means later, we might not be able to eat like this even if we want to." Liu Ruoling patted her chest and said, "It's okay, leave everything to me." Liu Ruoxi looked at Liu Ruoling's rather flat chest and couldn't help but wonder if she had flattened it herself, and couldn't help but chuckle. The two sisters joked and laughed for a while longer, and then the rabbit legs and wild vegetable soup was ready. Today, the two of them still maintained a sense of ritual, finding some stones to build a table and two more stones to use as stools. Of course, the stones for the stools were from before, while the stones for the table were ones Liu Ruoling had picked up from the stream before cooking. The table was placed under the treehouse, with the treehouse floor directly overhead, and the campfire positioned a little further in front.

After the two sisters were seated, Liu Ruoxi took out a military knife and cut the easily slicing meat from the rabbit leg, placing it on a stone plate. Next to it was a pot containing a stew of wild vegetables and meat. Only after slicing the rabbit leg did Liu Ruoling call for dinner. By this time, Liu Ruoling was already impatient; if she hadn't been slapped a few times, she would have started eating long ago. Liu Ruoling first picked up a piece of rabbit meat, saying as she ate, "Sister, your roasted rabbit leg is getting better and better." Liu Ruoxi, who was preparing the soup, said, "If it's good, eat more. Eat slowly, no need to rush." Seeing Liu Ruoxi preparing the soup, Liu Ruoling quickly reached for the pot with a bamboo bowl in one hand. Liu Ruoxi shook her head, but had no choice but to give her a bowl of soup as well. After preparing the soup, Liu Ruoxi took a sip before picking up a piece of rabbit leg meat. After eating it, she said, "It still lacks flavor." Liu Ruoling said, "Sister, why don't we find some time to go to the other side of the mountain and see how far the sea is from us? If it's close, we can go to the seaside to boil salt. If it's far, we can think of other ways." Liu Ruoxi said, "Let's talk about it later. Right now, neither of us has the ability to travel that far." Hearing this, Liu Ruoling didn't say anything more. She knew that was indeed the case. They had just settled down and were only just getting on the right track. If they went there, and encountered some wild animals along the way, the two of them would be completely defenseless.
