Wang Lun placed the two women on the kang (a heated brick bed). Upon closer inspection, he recognized them as the Liu sisters. Wang Lun and Li Ling exchanged a glance. Wang Lun touched their foreheads and pointed at Liu Ruoxi, saying, "Both of them have a fever, but this one is more serious. I'll go find some herbs to try and bring down her fever. Take off their clothes; they're all wet, which will worsen their condition." Wang Lun took off his own upper body, including his undershirt, and tossed it aside. Then, he took a pot and went to the basket used for wild vegetables to find herbs.

Li Ling first removed Liu Ruoxi's upper body, using her own body to cover herself. A short while later, Wang Lun seemed to have found the herbs and left. Li Ling then quickly dried them both off and changed them into dry clothes. Liu Ruoxi wore Wang Lun's shirt, covered with an overcoat, and her lower body was covered with a sheepskin blanket—the same one Li Ling usually used for sleeping. As for Liu Ruoling, there was no other option but to use Li Ling's overcoat to cover her upper body, and her lower body was covered with a straw mat.

While Li Ling was still dressing the two men, Wang Lun was already at the door. He knocked, but Li Ling told him to wait a moment. After Li Ling finished dressing and covering them up, she checked them again to make sure nothing was leaking light before letting Wang Lun in.

Wang Lun came in and immediately started a fire to brew the medicine. He also lit the kang (a heated brick bed) to warm the two sisters. After doing this, Wang Lun turned to look at the two sisters and noticed their hair was still wet. He asked, "Didn't you dry their hair?" Li Ling replied, "We don't have any dry clothes." She pointed to her half-soaked shirt. Wang Lun glanced at it and said, "We still have some rat and rabbit skins; you can use those." Li Ling then went to get the two rat and rabbit skins and dried their hair and faces. After that, Li Ling looked at the medicine Wang Lun had brewed for them and asked, "What's in this?" Wang Lun said, "Bupleurum and some other herbs." Li Ling said worriedly, "Won't this cause problems?" Wang Lun said, "How could it? At most, they'll just get diarrhea." Li Ling was relieved to hear that; as long as it didn't kill them, it was fine. Wang Lun stirred the medicine beside her. Li Ling watched for a while, but found it boring, so she went back to the fire pit to continue weaving straw sandals. Just as she was weaving, Wang Lun said, "Stop weaving straw sandals, let's weave two straw mats instead." Li Ling knew what Wang Lun meant. She wanted to weave two straw mats to cover the two sisters, so they could continue using them later. So she put the straw sandals she was weaving aside, picked up some dry grass, and started weaving straw mats.

After a while, Wang Lun took the pot out and let it cool for a bit before calling Li Ling over to feed Liu Ruoxi her medicine. Li Ling came over and said, "How can we feed her? She won't open her mouth." Wang Lun said, "Two methods: either pry open her mouth and force-feed her, or you or I can feed her imported medicine." Li Ling rolled her eyes and said, "Dream on. Pry open her mouth and force-feed her." Wang Lun said, "I'm afraid Liu Ruoxi can't do that; her body is too weak." Li Ling's eyes widened and said, "Then there's only one option left." Wang Lun smiled and said, "Two: you or me." Li Ling glared at Wang Lun and said, "Don't dream about such things." So she took a mouthful of medicine from the bowl, and then the two of them fed Liu Ruoxi the imported medicine mouth-to-mouth. Soon, bowl after bowl was finished. When Li Ling was about to get up to rinse her mouth, Wang Lun stopped her and said, "No rush, there's another bowl." Wang Lun poured another bowl from the pot and handed it to Li Ling. Li Ling glared at Wang Lun, who then pushed the bowl forward further. Li Ling had no choice but to take the bowl and continue feeding Liu Ruoxi the imported medicine. Wang Lun watched the two women kissing in front of him, a hint of excitement creeping into his eyes.

After a short while, Li Ling had fed all the medicine to Liu Ruoxi. Then, she put down the bowl, grabbed a bamboo tube filled with water, and went to the door to rinse her mouth. Wang Lun watched Li Ling rinse her mouth, shook his head, and continued pouring the remaining medicine from the pot into the bowl. When Li Ling came back in, he said, "Help Liu Ruoling sit up, I'll force-feed her the medicine."

Li Ling came over and helped Liu Ruoling lift her head. Wang Lun pried open her mouth with one hand, then used the other to spoon-feed her the medicine. She quickly finished the bowl of medicine. Wang Lun then filled half a bowl with warm water and gave some to each of the two sisters. Of course, Liu Ruoxi drank the water directly, while Liu Ruoling didn't receive that treatment. After feeding the two sisters their medicine, the two returned to the fire pit to continue weaving straw mats.

This time, however, Wang Lun still had his back to the kang (heated brick bed), while Li Ling sat opposite him, whereas before she had always sat beside him. Not long after they sat down, Li Ling asked, "How are they? Will they be alright?" Wang Lun said, "The younger one is healthy; she'll wake up soon, um, two or three hours, four hours at most." Li Ling said, "That's good." Wang Lun continued, "The older one isn't doing well; she's too weak and has a fever. We'll see if her temperature comes down tonight. If it does, then everything will be fine; if not, then she should withdraw from the competition to avoid further complications." Li Ling said, "Is it that serious?" Wang Lun said, "It's like this for now, but it might get worse, after all, I only touched her forehead." Li Ling said, "Where else do you want to touch?" She looked at Wang Lun with a hostile expression. Wang Lun ignored Li Ling's gaze and said, "Pulse, you know how to treat illnesses with pulse diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine?" Li Ling said, "You know Traditional Chinese Medicine? How come I don't know?" Wang Lun said, "I've read some books, but I haven't practiced it myself." Li Ling said, "Are you sure you're not kidding me?" Wang Lun held up four fingers and said, "I'm proclaiming 'four'." Li Ling looked at Wang Lun, thought for a moment, and said, "Why don't you give it a try? She probably doesn't know either." Wang Lun said, "That's not a good idea. I have no experience. What if she sues me for practicing medicine without a license?" Li Ling rolled her eyes and said, "There are only four people here, and two of them are lying down. Who's going to sue you? Just try it." Wang Lun thought for a moment and said, "Then I'll give it a try. Don't blame me if it doesn't work." Li Ling said, "Definitely." In her heart, she thought, "I definitely won't blame you, but I'll definitely laugh at you for a while." Wang Lun said, "Then I'll give it a try."

So the two walked to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed). Li Ling asked Wang Lun to turn around, and Wang Lun did so. Only then did Li Ling pull Liu Ruoxi's hand out of her coat, tighten the coat to cover her completely, and then asked Wang Lun to turn around. When Wang Lun turned around, he saw a fair arm resting on the kang. He said to Li Ling, "Then I'll begin." Li Ling nodded.
