Chapter 34 Huo Qubing Deep into the Enemy Camp!

Inside the garrison's residence.

Wu Yi was eating at that moment, and the table was full of wine and meat.

Unlike the people in the city, his mansion had a lot of food, which naturally came from the people.

When Huma plundered civilians, he turned a blind eye and pretended not to see it, so Huma wouldn't bother him.

Thus, although he was in Hu Rong Pass, Wu Yi was doing quite well. However, this place was a dangerous place after all. Wu Yi had amassed a lot of gold and silver, and he was planning to send it to his superiors soon so that he could find another job.

Before the gold and silver could be delivered, news arrived that the imperial court had dispatched the Prince of Zhenbei to quell the rebellion of the Hu and Ma tribes.

"The Prince of Zhenbei? Hmph, what's the use of wiping out a bunch of bandits? They're just a rabble. Do you think these Hu cavalry are so easy to subdue?"

Thinking of this, Wu Yi shook his head, looking indignant.

He had no intention of using his troops to fight the Hu Ma with Qin Ze after Qin Ze arrived; that would be suicidal.

He didn't believe Qin Ze had the ability to quell the Hu and Ma tribes; he'd be lucky if he didn't get killed by them.

Just then, a subordinate rushed in to report.

"Lord Wu! The Prince of Zhenbei's troops have entered the city, and they've killed the Hu cavalrymen who entered!"

Upon hearing this, Wu Yi raised an eyebrow and put down his rice bowl.

"What? You killed Hu cavalry? How could you be so reckless! Alas!"

"This has enraged the Huma, and what should we do if they lead their army into the city!"

"By the way, how many men did the Prince of Zhenbei bring?"

The subordinate immediately replied, "Reporting to your Excellency, there are only a few hundred people. They headed towards the pass, and it seems they are going to leave the pass and head to the Beiku Grassland."

As soon as he finished speaking, Wu Yi's face turned extremely ugly.

"Hundreds of people? This...this group of idiots! How can hundreds of people possibly get out of the pass and reach the Northern Grassland! This is utter nonsense!"

The subordinate quickly added, "Sir, this should be the vanguard of the Prince of Zhenbei. We haven't seen the Prince of Zhenbei himself yet; he's still behind, and there might be many more troops."

Wu Yi glared at his subordinate and said coldly:

"Fool! What do you know? How many soldiers does he have? The imperial court didn't give him a single soldier this time. Commander Zhao also said that he only has a few thousand men! What can a few thousand men do? The Northern Barbarians have tens of thousands of soldiers. They wouldn't even be enough to fill a tooth gap for them!"

"Who among those barbarian cavalry can defeat them on the grasslands?"

The subordinate stammered, "My lord, the vanguard sent by the Prince of Zhenbei slaughtered the Northern Hu soldiers who broke into the city. It seems that none of them were injured. The Prince of Zhenbei's troops seem to be very powerful!"

Upon hearing this, Wu Yi raised an eyebrow and said in a deep voice:

"How many Northern Hu soldiers did you kill?"

"More than two hundred people!"

Upon hearing this, Wu Yi rolled his eyes.

"That's all there is to it. They outnumbered the enemy; the Northern Hu soldiers probably didn't expect them to suddenly appear..."

"Sigh, forget it. If these two hundred men die, I'm afraid the Northern Barbarians will get serious. You may leave now!"

Wu Yi frowned, wanting only to leave Hu Rong Pass safely, but Qin Ze was acting this way, putting him in danger.

Enraged, the Northern Hu actually led their troops into Hurong Pass. What should be done then?

Thinking about this, Wu Yi had a terrible headache...

...

On the other side.

Huo Qubing had already led his Tiger and Leopard Cavalry out of the pass.

Looking out, apart from the loess soil for about a kilometer ahead, there was an endless grassland stretching as far as the eye could see.

"Our lord is going to confront the Northern Hu head-on. I need to find out the strength of these Hu cavalry and find their weaknesses!"

With this in mind, Huo Qubing led his Tiger and Leopard Cavalry forward.

They hadn't brought much food on this trip, traveling light. After galloping along the grassland for more than ten miles, they encountered a sizable earthen slope ahead.

Huo Qubing pricked up his ears and heard the neighing of horses coming from behind the earthen slope, which made him more alert.

He raised his hand, ordering the Tiger and Leopard Cavalry to halt their advance. He then dispatched two Tiger and Leopard Cavalrymen, instructing them to dismount and proceed on foot to scout out the situation ahead.

The two tiger-and-leopard riders immediately dismounted and ran forward quickly.

The grass was soft, and even running at full speed made no noise. The two quickly reached the vicinity of the earthen slope.

The two bent down and carefully climbed the earthen slope...

A moment later, the two returned by the same route and reported what they had seen and heard to Huo Qubing.

It turned out that behind that earthen slope was a vast lake, and around the lake was the Hu horse camp.

Unlike the Central Plains, the Hu cavalry set up camp in tents and did not build any defensive fortifications. They were a nomadic people who went wherever they pleased.

There are large lakes here, where countless horses are kept, and along the lakeshore are endless camps.

Huo Qubing stroked his chin, seemingly lost in thought.

A moment later, he led the Tiger and Leopard Cavalry along the earthen slope to the left, directly bypassing the Northern Hu camp.

Because they were on the grasslands, Huo Qubing deliberately chose to travel in higher terrain to avoid being spotted by the Northern Hu people.

And so, after going around in circles, Huo Qubing reached the rear of the Northern Hu camp.

During this long journey, he also got a clear picture of the number of tents belonging to the Northern Hu.

The Northern Hu had more than four or five thousand tents. Assuming ten people per tent, that would amount to at least forty or fifty thousand men. After figuring out the approximate number of Northern Hu soldiers, Huo Qubing made a plan.

He then dispatched another Tiger and Leopard Cavalryman, ordering him to return the way he came and inform Qin Ze of the news.

He himself led the remaining Tiger and Leopard Cavalry, preparing to act at night!
