As the cannons were carried out, the Fusang fleet, which was preparing to dock, finally realized something was wrong.
Saigo stared wide-eyed, his face filled with shock as the cannons gradually came into view.
"What...what is this doing?"
The soldier beside him looked flustered and hurriedly said, "Something's not right, General! This doesn't seem like they've come to welcome us!"
Immediately afterward, soldiers rushed towards the cabin. They were Yamanakajima's personal guards and were going to report the news to him.
Soon, the soldiers found Yamanakajima sitting on a stool in the cabin, sulking.
"General! Cannons have appeared in the harbor!"
"There are dozens of cannons just in sight! And who knows how many more are hidden behind the wall!"
"You should go and take a look!" the soldier said.
"What?!" Yamanakajima jumped to his feet, his face filled with shock.
"Artillery? Why would they reveal artillery just as we're about to land?!"
In just a moment, he reacted swiftly, shouting, "What did Saigo say? Did he order a change of course away from the port?"
"No...no, General Saigo hasn't given any orders yet. I noticed something was wrong with the cannons, so I immediately reported to you!" The soldier looked at Yamanaka Terashima's expression and knew that something was probably wrong, so he became even more flustered.
"Baka! Hasn't this idiot realized what's happening yet?! Quick! Get out of the port!"
As he spoke, Yamanaka Terashima hurriedly ran outside, shouting as he did so:
"Quickly! Sail away from the port immediately!!!"
"Notify everyone! Have all ships leave port immediately!"
"We absolutely cannot get any closer to the shore!"
The soldiers inside the cabin realized the seriousness of the situation, but they were momentarily stunned. However, they quickly sprang into action!
Yamanaka Terashima instructed his soldiers to go to the deck to inform Saigo, while he himself hurried towards the bridge.
In the narrow passageway, Yamanaka Terashima was covered in sweat, his eyelids twitching incessantly, and a strong sense of unease surrounded him. He ran at what felt like the fastest speed he had ever run.
The boat bridge was just ahead, and Yamanakajima roared again:
"Sail away from the port! Away from..."
"Bang!"
"Bang bang bang!"
Before he could finish speaking, a series of loud roars followed.
Almost simultaneously, Yamanakajima swayed and nearly fell to the ground.
The ship seemed to be trembling, and the sound of breaking was clearly audible to him at that moment.
"It's over! The shelling has started!"
At that moment, Yamanakajima's mind went completely blank.
"Boom boom boom!"
The deafening roar grew increasingly intense. Even though he was still inside the ship, he knew without looking that the hull was being subjected to a terrifying artillery attack!
The entire ship began to shake violently, it was like an earthquake!
Holding onto the plank, trying his best not to lose his balance, Yamanaka Terashima stumbled upwards, but pieces of wood kept falling from the top, and at the same time, roars and screams came from above.
It's obvious that someone on deck was shot!
Just in time!
A loud "bang"!
The ship shook violently, and Yamanakajima was jolted and inevitably fell to the ground. As soon as he landed, he looked down at the wooden ladder below!
Panic-filled shouts came from below:
"It's wrecked! The ship is wrecked!"
"It's leaking! It's leaking! Run!!!"
Immediately afterward, several oarsmen began to run uphill in a panic.
Upon hearing the word "leaking," Yamanaka Terashima suddenly stood up, covering his head with his hands as he ran upwards.
During this time, the roar from outside grew louder and louder, and all sorts of noises came in a jumble, and Yamanakajima finally arrived on the deck.
But he was very careful and did not run directly to the deck. As soon as he poked his head out of the cabin door, he hurriedly took a step back. Looking at the scene in front of him, his pupils contracted and his face was completely bloodless.
The air was filled with lead bullets, countless of all sizes, and the deck was a mess, with countless corpses lying on it!
These people died in gruesome circumstances, most of them mutilated, their remains mixed with blood, lead bullets, and broken pieces of wood.
Moreover, the deck had been blasted open, creating numerous craters of varying sizes. Near some of these craters, several soldiers were clinging to planks, shouting for help.
"Help! Help me out!!!" someone shouted.
"Where is Saigo? Where is he?" Yamanaka Terashima roared.
Amidst the scattered limbs and debris, fragments of ships strewn about, and soldiers frantically dodging artillery fire, Saigo Ryo was nowhere to be seen.
Just in time!
A loud "crack" was heard.
Yamanakajima hurriedly looked up!
The next moment, he took a deep breath and sprinted towards the outside of the ship!
The incoming cannonballs were truly terrifying. Yamanaka Terashima used all his strength to sprint outwards. When he reached the railing, he closed his eyes and jumped.
With a loud "bang!"
The mainmast tilted at this moment, and the already tattered sails crashed down with it!
"boom!"
Wood chips flew everywhere, and screams filled the air; countless people were crushed to death at that moment.
Meanwhile, some quick-witted people, like Yamanakajima, jumped into the sea.
"puff"
Yamanakajima suddenly emerged from the sea, spitting out the salty water. He turned to look behind him and saw that the ship was now in ruins, with countless craters on its hull from cannon fire!
