"Why don't you surrender now? Do you want to die here?"
In the fields where they were chasing each other, Jin Xuan, his face covered in sweat, was still galloping wildly on horseback, while the roars behind him were getting closer and closer. He turned his head to look back.
In a lush green field, more than ten cavalrymen dressed in black robes and with their faces covered by black veils were pursuing them, while most of his men had already fallen into enemy hands.
They lay on their backs on the ground, their condition unknown. Seeing this, Jin Xuan turned his head to look ahead.
Your Majesty has already ridden into the paddy field, but the enemy soldiers are chasing so fast that it seems Your Majesty cannot escape and will be captured sooner or later.
"call--"
Jin Xuan exhaled a breath of stale air, but his heart was not greatly disturbed; in fact, he was quite calm.
When Nanze was destroyed, this outcome was already inevitable. Even if one managed to escape Nanze by chance, what difference would it make?
The world is vast, and there are indeed many places to go, but it must be admitted that things are not what they used to be. This land has changed hands and is now called the Yan Kingdom.
Everything that belonged to Da Gan has been stripped away today, at this very moment.
The people of Nanze seemed to have accepted it all, otherwise why would they have escaped without receiving any help from anyone?
Instead, they kept their distance, as if afraid of being implicated.
'It's really over. We've lost everything.'
'Even the common people have abandoned us.' Jin Xuan's lips twitched, and a self-deprecating smile appeared on his face.
The next instant, he yanked the reins, drew his sword from his waist, pulled his warhorse back, and shouted:
"Rebellious ministers and traitors!"
"I am Jin Xuan, the commander of the Imperial Guards! Let me take your heads!"
With a roar, Jin Xuan drew his sword and charged at the person behind him.
But what awaited him was an arrow.
The arrow soared into the sky, its pure white tail seemingly transparent in the sunlight, but its silvery-white metallic arrowhead reflected a dazzling light.
With a "poof" sound.
The arrow pierced the soft flesh, a horse neighed, and the warhorse crashed to the ground, with Jin Xuan falling down after it.
The arrow missed him but struck the warhorse. Jin Xuan lay on the ground, his eyes calmer than ever before, his face showing no sign of pain. He felt only relief.
In a mere instant, a long black robe shielded the sun, a swift figure swept overhead, a curved blade pressed against a neck, and a soft laugh followed:
"So, that one up ahead must be Jin Fengluan, right?"
Facing the knife to his neck, Jin Xuan showed no fear, but calmly said, "What do you think?"
"Oh."
Amidst light laughter, the remaining black-clad riders galloped past.
——
Hu San couldn't understand why, after finally finishing planting the rice seedlings before noon and packing up to go home, such a distressing thing had happened!
Standing on the field, Hu San watched the soldiers running towards him from afar, his lips pursed, his face full of helplessness.
He really wanted to take off his straw hat, stomp on it hard, and then point his finger at the sky and curse:
"Damn you, Heaven! How could you be so blind!"
"I just want to finish planting the rice seedlings, so what? Is it getting in your way?"
"Why are you hindering me like this again and again!"
But he knew that God certainly didn't care about his insults. He didn't care about anything, or rather, there was no God at all. If there really was, then God was not worthy of being called "God".
The son hid behind him, clutching the hem of his clothes tightly. He was terrified and kept saying, "Dad, we have to go quickly."
Hu San thought he should leave, but then a soldier rode his horse this way.
He rode his horse across the paddy fields, trampling the rice seedlings into a mess.
Even though it was someone else's field and had little to do with him, he still felt heartbroken because he knew that it was also someone else's hard work in planting the seedlings, and it was really too much to ruin the seedlings like this.
And now, this soldier is running towards his field, and he is about to ruin the rice seedlings he just planted.
During the previous conscription, a soldier had given him a severe beating. Hu San clearly remembered that the soldier had a fierce face and pointed at him, saying:
You're finished!
"If you dare go back to me, I guarantee you'll never have to farm again! And your family's land will be gone too!"
Even after escaping home, Hu San could never forget those two sentences. That's why he got up immediately after resting for a day, just in case someone really came looking for him later.
Now, most of these soldiers were sent by that person back then. Hu San clenched his fists, panting heavily, his eyes under his straw hat widening.
The son called out again, "Dad, hurry up, they're coming!"
"Get out!!"
"I'm not going back!" Hu San shouted as he turned his head.
The son trembled; he had never seen his father so angry before.
"Father, but..." Before he could finish speaking, Hu San suddenly shoved him, yelling, "Go back!!"
"I'm not leaving today! Even if the King of Heaven himself comes, I won't leave! Whoever tries to ruin my fields! I'll fight them to the death!" Hu San gritted his teeth; he was beyond furious.
"Didn't you hear me?! Go back!!" Another angry roar rang out, and the son cried out once more before turning and running away.
"Huff, huff—" Hu San panted heavily, took two steps forward, and shouted at the people running towards him:
"Stop!!"
"If you run any further, you'll be heading into my field!"
The man ignored him and continued riding forward, oblivious to everything.
