Since the beginning of June, the sun has become increasingly intense day by day. Especially in the latter part of the month, the entire city of Nanjing was shrouded in a layer of heat. The incessant chirping of cicadas exacerbated the heat, and everyone was drenched in sweat. It was clear that Nanjing was significantly hotter this year than last year. Fortunately, two days before the summer solstice, the heavens showed mercy and sent down a thunderstorm, which provided some relief.
After the summer solstice, the weather gradually became hot again. Today, June 25th, the sun is blazing and there is not a single cloud in sight. The heat is even higher than before the thunderstorm.
Although the heat was unbearable today, the people of the city did not hide indoors. Instead, they came out of their homes in large groups early in the morning. From toddlers to old men and women, young and old alike, people from all walks of life, from all walks of life, were heading to the same destination.
They were going to the largest vegetable market in the south of the city.
Today, something important is happening there, and for most people, it's a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Like most people who love to watch the excitement, Er Mao was one of them. He lived in the north of the city and had been planning to go there today ever since he heard the news a few days ago. Moreover, once he arrived, he wanted to pick a good spot.
However, it was quite a distance from his home in the north of the city to the vegetable market in the south. To find a good spot, he had to get up early and walk slowly. As a result, he barely slept last night, just to get up early this morning.
After a night, Er Mao did get up very early, but still did not set off early. His father had drunk alcohol the night before and was sleeping soundly. Er Mao called him for a long time before finally waking him up. But it was not too late yet, and if they left immediately, they would still have time.
Just before leaving the house, his mother suddenly stopped him, saying that children shouldn't see such scary things. She grabbed Er Mao's arm and wouldn't let him go out. Er Mao struggled with his mother for a long time before finally persuading her. Only then did he hurriedly follow his father out of the house.
But this was undoubtedly too late, and finding a good spot at the market was almost impossible, which really troubled Er Mao.
But this wasn't the only thing that bothered them.
Another distressing thing was that his younger sister couldn't come. Although his mother agreed to let him go, she wouldn't allow his sister to come along, saying that she was afraid of scaring her.
Er Mao tried to persuade his mother, but to no avail. He had no choice but to leave his sister, who was blinking and looking eager to go, and go out the door.
Now, Er Mao, who was walking briskly forward with his father, glanced at the people beside him and couldn't help but sigh.
There were just too many people, and it was so hot that everyone was drenched in sweat. The stench of sweat almost made him faint. Er Mao's legs were already weak from walking all the way. The aftereffects of not sleeping last night were now very strong. His excitement had long been worn away by the heat and exhaustion.
Tired and exhausted, Er Mao suddenly felt a pang of regret. He realized that today's commotion wasn't all that interesting. If he hadn't come, he would be taking his sister shrimp fishing right now, which would have been such a wonderful thing.
After summer arrived, the grassy pond not far from home produced a lot of shrimp, some even longer than my own hand, and quite plump. It only took an afternoon to catch a whole basketful. In the evening, I would bring them home for my mother to cook, and listening to my father brag while we ate made it all the more enjoyable.
But I won't be able to catch any shrimp today, because even if I go back right after watching the show, I probably won't get home until almost evening.
"Sigh." Er Mao sighed again, now truly filled with regret.
"What's wrong? Tired?" At this moment, the father suddenly turned to look at Er Mao.
"Ugh, my legs are sore," Er Mao replied listlessly.
"Who asked you to come?" The father raised an eyebrow.
"Dad, carry me on your back, I can't walk anymore." Er Mao looked at his father for help.
"You brat, didn't I tell you you were a man before you left home? You can't even walk properly yet, is this what a man is like?" The father rolled his eyes, ignoring Er Mao's pleas and mocking him with a grin.
Er Mao lowered his head helplessly and stopped making a sound. Sweat dripped down his chin, and he was so hot that he opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue.
"elder brother!"
Er Mao was walking along with his head down like a sullen donkey when he suddenly heard a clear, melodious song like a nightingale behind him. He immediately turned around to look.
The little girl, wearing a faded floral jacket that was clean and well-fitting, with two pigtails, was waving at him with one hand raised high.
The little girl had a round face with rosy cheeks, and each of her two pigtails stuck in the air had a half-withered gardenia in it. She ran around like a little sparrow, bouncing along.
"Wen'er!"
It was his younger sister Wen'er who arrived. Er Mao called out anxiously. He was both surprised and delighted, and the weariness on his face disappeared completely.
Er Mao was completely surprised that his sister had come, but once he saw the person she was holding hands with, he understood everything.
That's Uncle Zhao Zhennan. His sister must have approached him and begged him to bring him over.
"Haha, wait for us!" Zhao Zhennan shouted with a laugh, quickly leading Wen'er to catch up.
As soon as he arrived, he and his father chatted happily as they walked. Er Mao didn't care about their business; he reached out and grabbed his sister's hand.
Compared to before the Lunar New Year, my sister's hands no longer have chilblains, and they are no longer dark and thin. Her hands are now plump, soft, and feel very comfortable to touch.
"I finally caught up with you guys." The sweltering heat made Wen'er's cheeks flush red, and sweat still clung to the tip of her nose, but she was all smiles at this moment.
Er Mao was also very happy, and his legs seemed to have stopped hurting. He was also more energetic. He scratched Wen'er's damp palm and asked in a low voice, "Did you come here without telling your mother?"
