As day turns to night and stars shift, a day passes in the blink of an eye.
The sky had darkened, but the omnipresent fog still lingered, blending into the darkness and making the land in the night seem even more eerie.
In front of the barbarian camp, Wu Kui sat on a rock, staring blankly at the burning campfire.
Beside him, Gu Hong kept his head down, slowly chewing on the fodder.
The military camp was bustling with noise; it was going to be quite lively.
Having traveled from the southern barbarian lands to the northern Liang, they had mostly been on a rapid march, so the soldiers were generally quite happy to have had a rest today.
Of course, the soldiers on guard around the camp remained fully focused, as there might be enemy troops ahead, and they could not afford to be careless in the slightest.
Wu Kui picked up a piece of dead wood at his feet and threw it into the weak campfire.
With firewood, the campfire got fuel and burned brightly again.
Scattered sparks landed at Wu Kui's feet, but he paid no attention, his gaze fixed on the campfire.
"Your Majesty, Your Majesty."
Two calls roused Wu Kui from his reverie.
Wu Kui looked up and saw the water bag that Shan Yi handed him.
Wu Kui took the water bag, opened it, and brought it to his lips, but stopped just as it reached the corner of his mouth.
"Wine?" He looked at Shan Yi with a puzzled expression.
Dan Yi squatted down and sat next to Wu Kui, chuckling softly as he said:
βIt is wine. Although Your Majesty does not drink when you are on campaign, I noticed that you seem to have something on your mind. It would be alright to have a small sip.β
"In the southern barbarian lands, Your Majesty is truly indulging in wine."
Wu Kui shook his head, gave a bitter smile, and looked up at the distant night sky, sighing:
"For some reason, ever since I came here, I've felt unwell all over, and even that lone goose seems to have changed."
Dan Yi turned his head to look at Gu Hong, then looked at Wu Kui and smiled:
"Yeah, that's normal."
"In recent years, we have been training our troops within the clan and haven't fought against outsiders for a long time."
"Qin Ze is the son of Qin Haotian, and what he has done is no less than what Qin Haotian has accomplished. He is a very strong opponent. Your Majesty has come here to fight him, so naturally you are worried."
Upon hearing this, Wu Kui raised an eyebrow and waved his hand, saying:
"No! You're wrong about that."
"You're making it sound like I'm afraid of fighting Qin Ze. Do you think I'm that kind of person?"
"Hmph, Qin Ze just hasn't met me yet. If he were to fight me, I would make him taste the bitterness of defeat!"
As he spoke, Wu Kui picked up the water bag and took a sip.
As the strong liquor went down his throat, Wu Kui's body began to burn, and he handed it to Shan Yi.
After taking a sip, Shan Yi wiped the wine from his lips and said:
"That's natural. Qin Haotian defeated my barbarian army badly back then, and afterwards we lost the strength to compete for Daqian."
"Now that we have strong troops and brave generals, we can easily defeat Qin Ze's rebellion. The empress in the court is also a useless person. Once we defeat Qin Ze, we can take over Beiliang."
"Given time, my barbarian tribe will become the masters of this great land!"
"This is the old barbarian king's last wish, and it is also our wish."
"With enemies ahead, we will clear the obstacles for Your Majesty and help you achieve your hegemony!"
At this point, Shan Yi turned to look at Wu Kui, his face solemn.
Wu Kui took the water bag from his hand, stood up, and was about to drink it all in one gulp, but put it down when he brought it to his lips.
He exclaimed loudly, "Well said!"
"Let's not drink this wine. We can drink it to our hearts' content after we defeat Qin Ze!"
Dan Yi smiled and nodded, took the water bag from Wu Kui, and the two walked towards the bustling military camp.
Beside the campfire, Gu Hong raised its head and watched Wu Kui's figure walk further and further away before lowering its head and snorting.
ββ
The next day, the fog that shrouded the barbarian camp dissipated slightly, but the distant Yanlu Mountain remained shrouded in mist.
After some deliberation, Wu Kui decided to continue guarding the military camp.
The fog remained the same the next day, and the barbarian army still hadn't left their camp.
Thus, from the moment the fog started, four days passed in total.
It was early morning on this day.
The sky was dark and overcast, a cold wind swept across the land, and sand and dust flew everywhere.
Although the sky was dark, the fog had already dissipated.
The barbarian camp, which had remained unmoved for four days, saw changes today.
A troop of soldiers, led by Shan Yi, galloped towards Yanluo Mountain.
In front of the military camp, Wu Kui stood with his hands behind his back, watching Shan Yi walk further and further away. He frowned and paced back and forth.
Behind him, the other seven valiant generals also looked worried.
Dan Yi's journey was extremely dangerous. Everyone knew that if they encountered a large enemy force at Yanluo Mountain, they would inevitably face a bloody battle.
But I have no choice but to go!
At this moment, a general carrying an iron fork walked up to Wu Kui. This man was named Bai Miao, and he was only twenty-five years old. Compared with the tall and strong Wu Kui, he was considered thin and weak.
But as one of the Eight Tigers, no one would question his abilities.
Bai Miao's appearance was not as rugged as most barbarians; on the contrary, he possessed a handsome appearance. He looked at Wu Kui and said:
"Your Majesty, General Shan has fought on the battlefield for many years and is very experienced. When he goes to Luoyan Mountain, he will sense something is wrong and will be able to deal with it in time."
"Your Majesty need not worry too much. Let's return to camp and await news."
Wu Kui's face was somber, and he frowned as he said, "We have been stationed here for four days, but we have not seen a single enemy soldier."
