Chapter 12 Wounded
After finishing their chores at home, Gu Laoda and Gu Laoer went to pick up their respective wives. Wang Ni led Gu Daya back safely.
Zhang Cuihua saw Gu Aidang at the door and said angrily, "So you still know to come and pick me up? Why didn't you wait until after the New Year to pick me up? Today is the 29th, and you're only coming to pick me up tomorrow, which is New Year's Day."
"What's wrong with you?" Gu Aidang ignored her, walked past her, and went into the house: "Mother, I've come to pick up Cuihua and Mengmeng to go home. There have been some things going on at home these past few days, so I'm sorry to have troubled you to take care of them." As she spoke, she handed over a pound of wild boar meat.
Zhang Cuihua's mother took the pork expressionlessly: "My son-in-law is not young anymore, it's time for him to have another child."
Gu Aidang's face turned ashen upon hearing this; Zhang Cuihua had thought her family could back him up.
Zhang Cuihua's mother pretended not to notice her son-in-law's bad expression and said, "Son-in-law, you don't even share a room with Cuihua. How can she give birth on her own? Even if she wants to, she can't."
Gu Aidang scoffed: "When she was pregnant, she accidentally fell and had a premature birth, which injured her body. Grandma Gu said that she would have difficulty conceiving in the future."
Then, looking at Zhang Cuihua, she said, "I gave you several years of chances. But you can't have children. Zhang Cuihua, do you think I wouldn't know just because you kept it from me? Liu Zhaodi told me a long time ago."
Zhang Cuihua turned pale after hearing what Gu Aidang said: "Grandma Gu said that if you take good care of yourself, you can still get pregnant."
Gu Aidang looked at her amusedly: "My family isn't short of food for you, is it? You want to eat bird's nest or something?"
When Zhang Cuihua's mother heard that it was her daughter's problem, she didn't know what to say. Without a son, she couldn't stand up for herself.
Zhang Cuihua could only lead her eldest daughter, Gu Meng, and Gu Lao Er back home in a dejected manner.
Gu Yihan followed Gu Hao to the river to look at the fish traps. Just as they reached the door, they saw Gu Lao Er leading Zhang Cuihua and Gu Meng back.
The moment Zhang Cuihua saw Gu Yihan, her mind was overwhelmed by resentment.
Gu Yihan could only feel herself being pushed down suddenly, and then her neck being grabbed.
"You little bitch, why don't you just die? It's all your fault that I can't have children." He said this while choking Gu Yihan's neck with all his might.
Gu Hao froze for a moment, then immediately pried Zhang Cuihua's hand off forcefully. He saw Gu Yihan's face turn bright red.
Zhang Cuihua was enraged and Gu Hao couldn't subdue her alone. Gu Hao shouted, "Second Uncle, come and help quickly!"
Gu Aidang then realized what was happening and immediately subdued Zhang Cuihua with Gu Hao. Gu Yihan had already been choked into shock.
Grandma Gu heard the noise and came out to see Gu Yihan lying on one side. She shouted for Uncle Gu to take the child to Uncle Gu, the barefoot doctor in the village.
When Gu Yihan woke up and saw her grandmother sitting in front of her bed, tears instantly streamed down her face: "Grandma."
Grandma Gu heard the voice and said worriedly, "Don't talk. Your Uncle Gu said your throat is a little sore."
Gu Yihan heard the worry in her grandmother's voice and cried out for the first time.
Grandma Gu hugged her tightly and said with heartache, "I won't let your mother get close to you anymore. She's a madwoman. A heartless wretch."
"Are you hungry? Grandma made you some porridge." Grandma Gu said, wiping away her tears as she went out.
Gu Yihan was truly wronged this time. She could sense that Zhang Cuihua wanted to strangle her, and she thought she was definitely not going to survive this time.
Grandma Gu stormed into Gu Lao Er's room and slammed the door open: "We've had the worst luck in eight lifetimes to marry a daughter-in-law like you. Even tigers don't eat their cubs."
Zhang Cuihua hated Gu Yihan to the core: "She is my daughter, and even if I want her to die, she has to die a good death."
Grandma Gu was about to scold,
"Grandma." Gu Yihan's pale face contrasted sharply with the bruises on her neck.
Gu Yihan, suppressing the pain in her throat, said, "Don't be angry, it's not worth it."
Zhang Cuihua cursed Gu Yihan furiously: "It's all because of you, you ungrateful wretch, you're the one who made me unable to have children. You're my nemesis, I'd be happy if you died."
“Your shameless father is no better. Don’t think I don’t know about his affair with that widow Zhao. You’ll both die a horrible death.”
When Gu Aidang heard this crazy woman grab him, he slapped her across the face: "Are you crazy? If you want to die, go back to your parents' house. Don't think I won't divorce you, you useless piece of trash."
Seeing her adoptive father and adoptive mother fighting, Gu Yihan was afraid that her grandmother would get hurt, so she quickly grabbed her hand and went out.
Grandma Gu was heartbroken. She had never liked Zhang Cuihua from the start, but her second son insisted on marrying her, and now look what happened.
"Grandma, don't worry, you still have us. Dad is an adult now and has his own ideas. You just need to worry about us younger generation." Gu Yihan said with difficulty.
Seeing her granddaughter looking at her with worry, Grandma Gu said, "Your parents are no good. I'm not going to take care of them anymore, and they won't listen to me anyway."
Gu Yihan smiled happily without saying a word. She led Grandma Gu slowly back into the house.
Gu Meng stood in the middle of the courtyard, looking at the whole place. Her parents were fighting, as if they were saying the most vicious things in the world to each other. Gu's uncle's family were all in their own rooms pretending not to hear.
Grandma Gu only ever had eyes for her younger sister Gu Yihan and her cousin Gu Hao; it seemed like no one in the family liked her.
From that moment on, she wanted to escape this home. She wanted to grow up quickly so she could get married and never have to return to this cold and heartless home again.
