Chapter 28 Certificate of Relocation
Two days before school registration.
"Grandma, I'm going to the brigade leader's house to get a household registration transfer certificate in a bit," Gu Yihan said while packing her things.
Grandma Gu said worriedly, "Then will I accompany you to your team leader's house? You'll be gone for several months, and I'm worried about you."
Gu Yihan smiled at Grandma Gu and said, "Grandma, I'm not a child anymore. I can go by myself. I'll come back to see you when I have a holiday."
Grandma Gu thought for a moment and said, "Okay."
Gu Yihan walked along the village path without looking around. If it weren't for the rumors that circulated two months ago, she would have been completely invisible in this village.
She felt no sense of belonging to the village and encountered Zhou Jiaxing, Liu Zhaodi's adopted son, on the road. He was bullying children younger than him with his obese body.
She ignored them and walked past them, quickly reaching the brigade leader's house. At the door, she called out, "Uncle Captain, are you home?"
Captain Gu Baoqing came out of the house: "Han girl, what's wrong?"
Gu Yihan walked into the courtyard and took out her vocational school admission notice from her shoulder bag—actually, from her spatial storage—and said,
"Uncle, I need you to issue a household registration transfer certificate. I need to transfer my household registration to a school in the city."
The brigade leader looked at the vocational school admission notice again and again: "Han girl, your family really kept it a secret. School is about to start, isn't it?"
Gu Yihan smiled and said, "Uncle, could you please wait until after I leave before telling anyone?"
The brigade leader was quite surprised: "This is the first of its kind in our village! We should make everyone in the village happy, since we are all relatives within the five degrees of kinship."
Gu Yihan wasn't embarrassed and said, "Uncle, as you know, some unpleasant things have been circulating in the village these past few days, haven't they?"
"I was thinking that once I started school, the rumors would just die down on their own. If I say it now, people will think I'm deliberately making fun of them."
Captain Gu Baoqing wasn't as easily fooled as Grandma Gu, but he didn't press for details: "Okay, Uncle promises you."
The brigade leader gave Gu Yihan a certificate proving her household registration had been transferred out of the brigade, and handed it to her. She took it and casually put it in her handbag. Then, she instantly teleported into her spatial dimension.
Gu Yihan said, "Captain, are you busy? I'll be going now."
Captain Gu Baoqing didn't reply, but nodded. After watching Gu Yihan leave, he went straight back to his room.
The brigade leader's wife said, "What does this girl Han want with you?"
Captain Gu Baoqing said, "This girl is amazing. She got into a vocational school in the city, majoring in accounting. After graduation, she'll be a city dweller, which is a secure job."
The brigade leader looked at his wife with wide, surprised eyes and said, "So amazing? Just a few days ago, she said she was expelled from school."
"That's just idle gossip from the village women. Don't take it seriously. Don't tell anyone yet. I promised Han'er that we'd wait until she starts school before telling anyone," the brigade leader instructed.
The captain's wife gave Gu Baoqing a reproachful look: "I know. Don't you believe me?"
When Gu Yihan returned home, there was no one there. She went back to her room and closed the door.
She took out the household registration transfer certificate, and as she looked at it, she couldn't suppress the bitterness in her heart. She lay down on the bed and burst into tears.
Gu Yihan knew she had been suppressing her feelings for too long. Now she was in a strange place, a place where as long as someone controlled her household registration, she would never be able to leave.
She will go to the household registration department of the Public Security Bureau tomorrow to transfer her household registration.
Once she graduates from vocational school, gets a job, and registers her household registration, no one can use her household registration to control her anymore.
Grandma Gu returned home from her private plot and heard her granddaughter crying. She said, "Hanhan, why are you crying?"
Hearing the sound, Gu Yihan opened the door and looked at Grandma Gu at the door, saying, "It's nothing, I was just thinking that I'm leaving tomorrow and I'm reluctant to leave you."
Grandma Gu's eyes were full of smiles as she said, "It's no big deal. If you miss Grandma, just come back. You were comforting me this morning."
Gu Yihan smiled but did not respond. Instead, she took Grandma Gu's hand and said, "Grandma, I'll cook with you."
Grandma Gu said, "No need. You're leaving tomorrow, you should rest. Gu Meng will be back soon, let her cook. Neither of us will cook today."
Soon after Gu Meng arrived home, she saw Gu Yihan and Grandma Gu chatting and laughing in the yard, which was particularly jarring.
When Grandma Gu saw her return, she said, "Mengmeng, you cook lunch today and steam an egg for Gu Bao."
Even though she was angry, Gu Meng suppressed her anger and said, "Grandma, I understand."
When it was time to eat, everyone in the production team finished work.
The whole family sat at the dining table to eat.
Grandma Gu smiled and placed the steamed egg in front of Gu Bao, saying, "Here, steamed egg for your little grandson, eat up."
The eldest daughter-in-law looked at Gu Yihan and pouted, saying, "Mother, Hanhan can't not earn work points, can she? She can't just eat for free every day."
The second son's wife, Chen Xiu, also said, "That's right, Mother. She has the body of a young lady but the fate of a maid."
Gu Yihan observed that the women in her family all had their own little schemes, while the men remained silent, clearly acquiescing.
She didn't give Grandma Gu a chance to speak, saying, "Okay, go to school tomorrow, get your graduation certificate, and come back to earn work points."
Gu's sister-in-law Wang Ni and her stepmother Chen Xiu only stopped after hearing Gu Yihan's promise.
Grandma Gu then said angrily, "Alright, eat your food. Even eating can't shut you up."
Gu Meng looked at her with a smug look, but Gu Yihan chose to ignore her and quietly ate her meal.
