Chapter 4 Name 2
Wang Ni rushed into the yard and shouted, "Oh no! My second sister-in-law is going to starve her child!"
"I haven't fed the baby all day! Mother, listen to this, the baby's voice has changed from hunger."
Grandma Gu rushed into her second daughter-in-law's room and bent down to look at the child. As soon as Gu Yihan saw Grandma Gu, her little mouth twitched and she burst into tears!
Although she wasn't a boy, there were few children in the family, so girls received some care and attention.
Grandma Gu quickly picked up the child. After she picked up the child, Grandma Gu looked at her with her two big, dark eyes filled with grievance and sobbed pitifully.
He immediately turned to his daughter-in-law lying on the bed and yelled, "Zhang Cuihua, don't play dead with me! You don't even feed the child, what use are you? If you don't feed the child, you can go back to your old Zhang family."
“Our Gu family can’t afford a heartless woman like you, who doesn’t even feed her own child and doesn’t care when the child cries.”
As soon as Gu Lao Er saw his mother scolding his wife, he quickly said, "Mother, Cuihua didn't mean it. Is it because she just gave birth and doesn't have enough milk?"
"No milk? Can't she say so? Is she mute? She doesn't even care when the baby cries. I think she's doing it on purpose." Grandma Gu directly lashed out at Gu Lao Er.
Looking at the old lady with a wrinkled face and a mean expression when she was angry, Gu Yihan felt a warmth in her heart.
Zhang Cuihua could only pretend to be upset as her mother-in-law's words became increasingly offensive.
She said, feeling wronged, "Mom, I didn't mean to. It's just that I was born prematurely and it hurt my body. I have no strength and no milk."
Gu Lao Er was heartbroken when he heard this and quickly said, "Cuihua, it's alright. You should take good care of yourself. Let your mother look after the child for now."
Grandma Gu was furious when she heard Gu Aidang say that: "You don't even want to take care of Zhang Cuihua's child. You want to freeload? No way! I think you've had too much of a good life and are just bored."
While patting Grandma Gu's back, Gu Lao Er whispered to comfort her, "Mother, look, Cuihua hurt herself this time because of the baby, and she doesn't have any milk."
"Just think of it as me. If she doesn't recover her health, she won't be able to have children in the future. Then your son will be childless. Can you bear to see your son grow old and have no one to take care of him in his old age?"
Grandma Gu softened when she saw Gu Lao Er, and said against her will, "I'll only take care of him for a month. If he's still like this after the confinement period, don't blame me for being impolite."
"Okay, okay, okay, I'll listen to you, Mother. After all, you're the pillar of the family," Gu Lao Er said with a grin.
Gu Yihan watched as her grandmother was easily appeased by this nominal father with just a few words. She knew that this father was a perceptive and sweet-talking person.
Grandma Gu carried the child back to the yard: "Eldest daughter-in-law, go and boil some rice porridge, I'll feed the child later."
After hearing this, the eldest son's wife tugged at Gu's clothes.
Old Gu was an honest and simple farmer, without many hidden agendas. When he saw his wife tugging at his clothes, she said, "Mom wants you to cook rice oil. Go quickly!"
Wang Ni could only get up and go to the kitchen to cook rice porridge. While cooking, she said angrily, "No milk yet? Who are you kidding? You just don't want to breastfeed, right? You act like you're so precious every day."
Wang Ni poured the cooked rice gruel into a bowl and placed it in front of Grandma Gu, deliberately saying, "Mom, this is rice gruel. Will you feed me or should I feed you?"
Grandma Gu glared at Sister-in-law Gu: "I'll feed them myself. I really don't know what you're going to do. Give the leftover rice from cooking rice oil to the three children. If you dare to steal any, I'll starve you for a day."
Just as Sister-in-law Gu was about to speak, Grandma Gu interrupted her: "What are you standing there for? Go wash the dishes."
Gu Yihan watched as Grandma Gu scooped up some rice oil with a spoon, blew on it, and fed it to her.
She quickly opened her mouth and pretended to wolf down her food. Grandma Gu felt extremely sorry for her and said while feeding her, "That's a heartless child. She didn't say anything when she didn't have milk. She pretended not to hear."
Gu Yihan finished eating soon after and fell asleep. She was only one day old and was just trying to stay awake.
She's quite happy now, at least she doesn't have to drink human milk anymore. If she didn't have any memories, it wouldn't matter, she wouldn't be able to drink it anyway.
Grandma Gu put the child on their bed. When Grandpa Gu saw Grandma Gu put the child on the bed, he asked, "Why did you bring the child over here?"
"Sigh, it's all because my second son's wife said she doesn't have enough milk and won't care when the baby cries. My second son asked me to take care of the baby for a month," Grandma Gu said with a sigh.
Old Gu stopped talking, since the old woman was in charge of everything at home anyway.
"By the way, go to the village chief and register the child's name and household registration."
As she spoke, she took a piece of paper out of her pocket. "Luckily, Grandma Gu gave us a name, it's quite nice. We can't count on the second son and his wife."
Old Gu took the paper and said, "Okay," before leaving with his hands behind his back.
The next month
Gu Yihan's daily rice and oil diet wasn't enough to satisfy her hunger, so she could only secretly drink the milk powder from her spatial storage when her grandmother wasn't home.
During their time together, Grandma Gu grew quite fond of her clean granddaughter. She would eat and then sleep, and if she needed to pee, she would just cry, saving her the trouble of washing her clothes.
Zhang Cuihua has finished her postpartum confinement period, and everyone is having dinner together.
While feeding her granddaughter, Grandma Gu said, "Second daughter-in-law, you're out of confinement now. Are you going to work in the fields or stay home to take care of the baby?"
Zhang Cuihua looked at the little girl her mother-in-law was holding; she had grown so plump and healthy in the past month.
"Mom, as you know, Mengmeng is still young. If I have to take care of Mengmeng and Xiaohan at the same time, I won't be able to manage it all."
After Grandma Gu finished feeding Gu Yihan, she heard Zhang Cuihua say this and slammed the bowl down heavily on the table, startling everyone who was eating.
"I think you just don't want to look after the child. Not to mention this past month, you haven't even glanced at him once. You keep making excuses about looking after Mengmeng, but Mengmeng is already so big. He usually plays with his older brother and sister. Does he need your attention?"
As soon as Gu Lao Er saw his mother getting angry, he quickly said, "It's not good for your health to be angry, Mother. I hope you live to be a hundred years old."
Grandma Gu wasn't going to listen to his nonsense this time. "And you, you're the child's father. Have you ever held the child or even looked at him?"
Gu Lao Er chuckled and said, "Look at what you're saying, Mother. Isn't this because I trust you? Look how well you've raised this child, so healthy and chubby. What do I have to worry about?"
“Cuihua is not as good at raising children as your mother. When she raised Mengmeng, she was so thin and pale, you know that.”
Grandma Gu sneered, "If you don't want to take care of the children, that's fine too. From today onwards, you don't need to stay at home to take care of them anymore. You'll go to work in the fields with the second son and the others every day."
Zhang Cuihua was about to speak when Gu Lao Er interrupted her, saying, "Mother, don't worry, I'll take the children to work in the fields from now on." With that, he pulled Zhang Cuihua back into the house.
When Gu Meng saw her parents were about to leave, she quickly put down her bowl and stopped eating, and followed them.
