Chapter 6 Daily Life
Time always flies by like sand slipping through your fingers. Gu Yihan turned one year old in the blink of an eye and knew that she was born in June 1952.
They now live in Gujia Village, a village where almost everyone is surnamed Gu with very few outsiders. Zhou Jianguo's family came here from his grandfather's generation, fleeing famine.
This timeline belongs to a parallel universe, and its economic development is very similar to that of the previous modern timeline.
After a year of cultivating a relationship with Grandma Gu, Gu Yihan's status has now risen to second place among the grandchildren, with her eldest cousin Gu Hao being first.
When Gu Yihan saw Grandma Gu return, her small body carried a small stool and her short legs shuffled along, calling out, "Grandma, please sit down, you've worked hard."
Grandma Gu looked at her little granddaughter carrying the stool with a smile and said, "My good granddaughter! Be careful not to fall."
Gu Yihan said in her tender little voice, "I won't fall, it's tiring for my breasts."
This has been happening every day since she learned to walk. She firmly believes that no matter how much her grandmother prefers boys, she will still cherish her relationship with her grandparents.
Because during this year, she realized that she could no longer rely on Zhang Cuihua and Gu Aidang for the rest of her life.
Grandma Gu happily took the stool and sat down. Gu Yihan immediately walked over to her grandmother's side and massaged her legs. Although her strength was probably only enough to tickle her grandmother, Gu Yihan knew that Grandma Gu was happy.
"Take a rest for a while, and your aunt will steam some eggs for you later," Grandma Gu said, looking at her little face.
Gu Yihan happily said, "Okay."
Soon everyone in the family returned. Gu Hao went to school in the village and came home for lunch every day.
"Eldest daughter-in-law, steam two bowls of eggs for Xiaohao and Hanhan to nourish them," Grandma Gu said.
Wang Ni replied, "Okay, Mother."
Zhang Cuihua said angrily, "Mom, you're being too biased! Why didn't Mengmeng get one?"
Gu Mengmeng looked at Grandma Gu with Xi Yi's gaze on her.
Grandma Gu said angrily, "I'm just biased, what can you do about it? Did I skimp on your food or drink? How old is Hanhan? How old is Mengmeng?"
Gu Aidang also said, "Mom, look, Mengmeng isn't as well-behaved as Hanhan. Let's get her a better one too."
Over the past year, Gu Meng has become tanned from working in the fields with her parents.
"Shut up! Did I not raise her properly? It's you two heartless parents who made the child work when she was so young. You say your sister-in-law favors boys over girls, but I haven't seen her bossing Daya around like that." Grandma Gu didn't like to talk about the couple.
Gu Meng watched her grandmother leave, her eyes dimming.
Gu Yihan didn't care about any of that; she just sat there waiting for the food to be ready before eating.
When they started eating, Gu Yihan scooped up some steamed egg custard with a spoon and fed it to her grandmother.
"My dear grandson, Grandma won't eat, you eat it yourself." Grandma Gu felt so relieved; her love for him hadn't been wasted.
"No, I won't drink milk." Gu Yihan stubbornly held up her hand.
Grandma Gu had no choice but to eat it.
"Tch, you bootlicker." Eight-year-old Gu Daya glared at Gu Yihan and said.
Gu Yihan ignored her, because her family had limited resources.
It's impossible to be fair and just with limited resources. If you get more, she gets less, so it's normal for her to be jealous and resentful. You can't benefit from something and then not allow others to say anything negative.
Gu Yihan happily ate her steamed egg custard. Actually, she didn't lack for food, but if she didn't fight for herself in this family, in this era, her fate would be to marry a farmer at the age of 18, which was something she couldn't accept.
Now, besides providing emotional support to her grandmother, Gu Yihan spends her days at home watching Gu Hao study.
When Gu Hao wasn't busy, she would take advantage of her young age and ask him to teach her. Gu Hao also liked this cousin very much, and whenever he had free time, he would read what he had learned to her.
This also resulted in Gu Hao's grades being considered quite good in the village.
Gu Yihan also realized that she had become illiterate because she was now learning traditional Chinese characters.
When Gu Yihan was playing at the gate of the courtyard, she saw Liu Zhaodi holding the son she had switched with her own and her two daughters. This was the first time she had seen her biological mother since she was born.
The son was fed until he was fat and bloated, while his own daughter was thin and pale.
Looking at Gu Yihan, who was pampered and looked fair and delicate, Liu Zhaodi's eyes flashed with jealousy. "Pah, a money-losing brat."
Gu Yihan sensed the malice and immediately ran home on her short legs. She was too young to withstand any danger.
Back in the yard, seeing her grandmother made her eyes well up with tears of grievance.
Seeing her granddaughter's aggrieved look, Grandma Gu quickly asked, "What happened? Who bullied Hanhan?"
Gu Yihan said in a spoiled tone, "Grandma, I saw someone who glared at me and said I'm a good-for-nothing."
Gu Yihan's speech is becoming more and more fluent.
Grandma Gu immediately walked out of the yard and looked at Liu Zhaodi and her three sisters walking not far away.
"Liu Zhaodi, if you can't speak properly, then don't speak at all. If you ever talk about my granddaughter again, I'll tear your mouth apart. Even the water in the ditch isn't as stinky as your mouth." Grandma Gu unleashed a barrage of words at Liu Zhaodi with her loud voice.
The noise was so loud that the neighbors on both sides came out.
Liu Zhaodi was trembling with anger: "Then you should take good care of your money-losing brat."
Grandma Gu was so angry that she was about to go up and pull her hair.
Grandma Zhou, the neighbor, quickly pulled Grandma Gu back: "You still think you're a young person?"
Turning to Liu Zhaodi, he said, "Hurry up and leave, or you'll get beaten up. The Gu family has two sons, but your family only has your husband."
At dinner, Grandma Gu angrily said at the table, "Today, that little wench Liu Zhaodi actually said our Hanhan is a money-loser."
"Eldest brother and second brother, you two go and ask that Jianguo what happened. Did my child eat his rice? Tell her to stop making trouble for no reason."
Both Gu Lao Da and Gu Lao Er replied at the same time, "Okay."
Zhang Cuihua scoffed: "Liu Zhaodi wasn't wrong, Mother. You're planning to raise her like a boy. No matter how well you raise her, she'll still have to get married off eventually."
She was at home that afternoon, and she heard that little bitch complaining.
She increasingly felt that this little bitch was there to bring her bad luck.
Grandma Gu is increasingly disliking her second daughter-in-law; she can't manage the children and is a troublemaker.
"If you corrupt Mengmeng, you can go back to your parents' home, and I'll find another virgin for my second son," Grandma Gu said angrily.
Zhang Cuihua turned pale with anger.
Gu Lao Er's eyes flickered when he heard his mother say this.
