Chapter 82 Stealing Clothes
Gu Yihan rode her bicycle, thinking about the chickens in her spatial storage, which she hadn't yet found an excuse to move out.
She turned her bicycle around and rode towards the nearest village.
Gu Yihan saw someone walking on the dirt road ahead. She quickly drove up to the person, a middle-aged woman: "Auntie, are you from the brigade around here?"
The middle-aged woman looked Gu Yihan up and down warily, noticing that the other woman was riding a brand-new women's bicycle.
Seeing that he was dressed neatly and cleanly, I felt relieved: "I'm from the Qingyuan Brigade up ahead. Is there anything I can help you with?"
Gu Yihan looked at her with a smile and said, "Auntie, I am a military dependent of the unit at the front. I want to go to the brigade to exchange for a hen that doesn't lay eggs, and then exchange it for some mushrooms from the mountains."
Upon hearing the female comrade say that she was a military dependent, the middle-aged woman smiled and stepped forward to take Gu Yihan's hand, saying, "There's no need to go to another family; I have one at home."
"Just call me Aunt Yang. Don't worry, the mushrooms and other fungi we grow are the cleanest we can find."
After saying that, he let go of Gu Yihan's hand and led the way, saying as he walked, "If you ever need anything in the future, just come to my house to exchange it."
Gu Yihan pushed her bicycle alongside Aunt Yang and said with a smile, "Aunt Yang, that's wonderful. You can call me Xiaohan, I'll be so grateful for that."
It took them 20 minutes to see the Qingyuan Brigade. It was the time when they finished work and were cooking. Wisps of smoke were floating in the sky, and behind them were several mountains, with green hills and clear water.
As they approached Aunt Yang's house, a small figure stood at the door. Gu Yihan watched as the little boy cheerfully called out to Aunt Yang, "Grandma, did you buy me candy?"
Aunt Yang patted his head and said, "Xiao Jun, Grandma will buy you some next time. We don't have any candy coupons at home."
Seeing the disappointment in the eyes of the boy named Xiaojun, Gu Yihan couldn't bear it and took out two hard candies from her bag: "Xiaojun, here's some candy for you."
Xiao Jun's eyes lit up, but instead of reaching out to take it, he turned to look at his grandmother.
Gu Yihan smiled and stuffed the candy into Xiaojun's hand. She looked up at Aunt Yang and said, "Aunt Yang, your Xiaojun is still watching you."
Aunt Yang nodded at Xiao Jun, thinking that she would give Gu Yihan more mountain produce later, and said, "She can only eat one."
"Okay, Grandma." After saying that, Xiaojun happily took the candy and ran off to play with his friends.
Aunt Yang pushed open the door, led Gu Yihan into her room, took out a bag of dried mushrooms, chestnuts, and red dates from the cupboard, and asked, "How many do you want?"
Gu Yihan watched Aunt Yang's actions and said, "Aunt Yang, give me all of them, and give me another chicken."
"The supply and marketing cooperative sells cleaned chickens for 1.2 yuan per jin. I won't take advantage of you. You don't need to clean them. I'll give you 1.2 yuan per jin."
I can trade you these dried mushrooms, chestnuts, red dates, and the like, using my cloth coupons, sugar coupons, and industrial coupons.”
Aunt Yang was tempted when she heard that Gu Yihan was exchanging tickets for money. Unlike the workers in the village, who received a fixed number of tickets each month, the villagers rarely saw more than a few tickets throughout the year.
"Okay, it's settled then. I'll go catch some chickens." After saying that, Aunt Yang handed the dried mountain produce to Gu Yihan.
After Gu Yihan took the dried goods, she weighed them in her hand. They looked large, but they were actually quite light.
Aunt Yang quickly grabbed a hen that wasn't laying eggs from the henhouse.
With light steps, she walked up to Gu Yihan and handed it to her: "Xiaohan, next time you need something, just come to me. If we don't have it at home, I'll go to someone else's house to get it for you."
Gu Yihan took the chicken, which was tied up tightly by Aunt Yang, took out some money from her bag, and handed it to her: "Okay, Auntie will come to you again next time."
Gu Yihan took the things and rode her bicycle to the family compound before taking out the five hens from the space.
At the entrance of the courtyard, Gu Yihan saw Zhao Ju standing in front of her door, her eyes red from crying and her pregnant belly protruding.
Gu Yihan quickly got out of the car, and while opening the door, she looked at Zhao Ju and said, "You're about to give birth, why are you still crying?"
After opening the door, Gu Yihan parked her bicycle, put the chickens back into the coop, turned around and saw Zhao Ju still standing at the door. She carefully pulled her into the house.
"Where's Shi Jianguo? Did the two of them have a fight?" Gu Yihan pressed her down on the wooden sofa and poured a glass of water in front of Zhao Ju.
"He's on a mission." After saying that, Zhao Ju's tears fell in large drops.
Gu Yihan quickly took out a handkerchief and handed it to Zhao Ju, "What happened? Is he on a mission? Did someone bully you?"
Zhao Ju took the handkerchief, wiping away her tears as she choked out, "I'm pregnant, and Shi Jianguo was worried about me while he was away on a mission, so he brought his mother here."
Gu Yihan looked at Zhao Ju with a puzzled expression and said, "Isn't this a good thing? You're about to give birth, and I can help you with your postpartum care."
“Wah…” Zhao Ju cried as she spoke, “She’s so nice to me in front of Shi Jianguo, but she changes her attitude as soon as he’s not home.”
"Even so, I could tolerate it, but she not only used my towel, she also wore my socks. Today I discovered..."
Zhao Ju cried and hiccuped: "Waaah... she even stole my underwear."
Gu Yihan: "..."
"You're pregnant, crying isn't good for the baby," Gu Yihan advised, patting Zhao Ju's shoulder.
Zhao Ju grabbed Gu Yihan's arm and said, "I find it disgusting. I told her it's unhygienic, but she wouldn't listen. She always says that her family was poor back then and they all shared a pair of pants, and nothing happened."
Having no other choice, Gu Yihan took Zhao Ju's hand, looked earnestly into her eyes, and said, "The most important thing right now is the baby in your belly."
"Nothing is more important than your health. Your mother-in-law is wearing it, so you can just stop wearing it later. We'll talk about it again after you've safely given birth."
Zhao Ju's emotions gradually stabilized; she had been experiencing significant mood swings due to her pregnancy.
Gu Yihan could understand Zhao Ju's feelings. It's uncomfortable for strangers to touch private things, let alone let someone else secretly wear them.
"Xiao Han, I've given birth, but I still have to go to work and don't have time to take care of the baby. Only Shi Jianguo's mother can look after her. What if she tries to wear my clothes when I'm not looking?"
Gu Yihan really couldn't answer her question, so she could only rephrase it: "Can't we ask Shi Jian's family relatives to come and see the child? Like the younger generation or something."
Zhao Ju shook her head and said, "No, the younger generation in their family are all too young."
Seeing Zhao Ju's worried expression, Gu Yihan couldn't bear it and whispered in her ear. After hearing this, Zhao Ju's eyes lit up and she said, "I understand."
Gu Yihan glanced at her watch and said to Zhao Ju, "It's getting late. I'll take you home, otherwise your mother-in-law will worry."
Zhao Ju carefully stood up, supporting her belly, and muttered, "She's not worried about me at all. I can tell she doesn't like me."
Gu Yihan didn't reply. She carefully helped Zhao Ju, locked the courtyard gate, and walked towards the family building.
