Chapter 5 Gu Hao Goes to School
Sister-in-law Gu said angrily, "This is really lazy! She doesn't even wash the dishes and just leaves. I've been doing housework for over a month. Mom, I'm not washing the dishes this month."
"Washing one more dish won't cost you anything," Old Gu said honestly.
With a snap, she said, "I'm not going to wash anymore. Why should I do housework while she's in postpartum confinement? She didn't do any housework when I was in postpartum confinement."
Sister-in-law Gu angrily shouted in the yard.
Brother Gu: "Keep your voice down, or the neighbors will laugh at you. When you were in postpartum confinement, your sister-in-law hadn't even entered the family yet."
“She’s not afraid of being laughed at, so why should I be? If anyone’s going to be laughed at, it’ll be Zhang Cuihua.”
"Gu Aiguo, you're a complete coward! Don't you see how much work your wife does every day?!" Zhang Cuihua snapped back.
Grandma Gu heard the noise in the yard and angrily said to Grandpa Gu, "Look at this, nobody wants to do any more work."
"Old man, what do you think about sending our eldest grandson to school?"
Old Gu looked up at the old woman and said, "If you have money at home, just let him go. Aren't you the one in charge of the money?"
“Alright, I just wanted to make sure the child isn’t blind. Look how beautiful the name Grandma Gu gave our granddaughter is, and it even has a good meaning!” Grandma Gu said happily.
Suddenly remembering something, he stood up and went to the yard, saying, "Eldest daughter-in-law, don't keep talking about how much work you do. Why don't you mention that you sneak bites while cooking? Do you think I don't know?"
Wang Ni was about to retort when she heard Grandma Gu say, "The original intention was for Xiao Hao to go back to school."
"Since you're so calculating, I can't be too biased. Since the second wife's children don't have any children who can go to school, then let's just not let them go to school at all."
Upon hearing this, Wang Ni immediately said, "Mom, what are you saying? I'm just washing the dishes!"
"Xiao Hao still needs to go to school. After all, he's the only boy in our family. If he succeeds, you'll be proud of him, won't you?"
Although Wang Ni herself is illiterate, she knows that she still needs to go to school, because only by going to school can she get out of poverty.
Hearing that he could go to school, Gu Hao happily ran out of the house and hugged his grandmother's arm: "Grandma, can I go to school now? I really want to go to school."
Grandma Gu looked at the happy little face and said, "You can go to school, but you have to study hard, okay?"
Gu Hao let go of Grandma Gu's arm and ran happily in the yard: "I can go to school now!"
The Gu family of three heard the sounds from the yard while inside the house.
Zhang Cuihua angrily slapped Gu Aidang's shoulder and said, "Look at your mother, she's just biased towards your older brother, and she still lets that brat Gu Hao go to school."
Gu Aidang wasn't buying his wife's act and said, "What's wrong with you? Do you really not want to see the child?"
Zhang Cuihua dared not say that she had injured her body this time. Last time she said she was injured, he thought she was just making things up to avoid being lazy.
Because she knew that Gu Aidang was very sexist.
He's just putting on an act. Don't be fooled by his usual pitying expression; what if she can't have children in the future?
Zhang Cuihua could only say aggrievedly, "I don't know why, but I just don't like her. And I made my mother have the baby because of you."
Then, pretending to wipe away tears, she said, "I don't have any milk. You're so small, so you have to sleep with us. You work all day and then you have to get up all night. Doesn't that keep you from sleeping? I'm just worried about you. Have you forgotten what happened to Mengmeng when she was little?"
Gu Lao Er was terrified when he thought about how Mengmeng used to cry every night.
Grabbing Zhang Cuihua's hand, he said, "My wife is so clever to come up with such a good idea. It'll just be a bit of a hassle for you to work with me."
Zhang Cuihua, unwilling to do any work, said with a wronged tone, "I can't do much either, what about Dad and my older brother?"
"Don't overwork yourself. If you ruin your health, I'll feel bad for you. I want to take good care of myself so I can have a son with you."
Gu Lao Er thought it made sense. He had been slacking off at work, so he said to Zhang Cuihua, "From now on, let Mengmeng work in the fields with us. She's already doing laundry, cooking, and taking care of children at the age of five, which is better than other people's children."
When Mengmeng heard her father call her name, she didn't understand the hardship of working in the fields. Her little face lit up with joy as she said, "Mom, I'll do the work for you."
Zhang Cuihua said happily, "My daughter is so considerate of her mother. She knows how hard her mother works. I love my daughter the most."
