Chapter 8 Going Up the Mountain

Chapter 8 Going Up the Mountain

While eating, Zhang Cuihua looked at the wild vegetable porridge and wild vegetable cornbread on the table in front of her and said with a unhappy face, "Mom, are we out of food?"

"Eat it or not, it's up to you. If you don't want to eat, then go hungry. From now on, you'll all be digging for wild vegetables after work," Grandma Gu said while drinking her porridge.

“Da Ya, Meng Meng, you don’t need to go to work anymore. Go up the mountain to dig wild vegetables and dry them into dried vegetables,” Granny Gu said, looking at them.

"Mother, they still need to go to work to earn work points, otherwise they won't get any grain at the end of the year, so what will they eat?" Sister-in-law Gu said unhappily.

Grandma Gu didn't respond to her sister-in-law's words, but looked at Daya and Gu Meng. The two little girls said, "We know, Grandma."

"Grandma, Mom, I'm back." Before even seeing him, Gu's sister-in-law heard his voice and immediately stood up, ran to the door, and grabbed Gu Hao's hand: "Son, why are you back at this hour?"

Gu Hao is sixteen years old this year, already a young boy, and he is 1.73 meters tall. Although he is thin and has a dark red complexion, his big eyes under his thick eyebrows are particularly bright.

"Mom, summer vacation has started, so I'm back now," Gu Hao said happily.

Grandma Gu also asked if he was doing well at school, and Gu Hao said he was.

Gu Hao from the family also went to work with the adults.

Gu Yihan now goes out to dig for wild vegetables with her cousin Gu Meng every day, and her days are very fulfilling.

Today, Gu Yihan and Gu Meng went up the mountain together. Gu Meng is already 11 years old and doesn't like to lead her, so she left her behind on the way up the mountain.

She could only dig for wild vegetables while looking around.

"Hey, there's a rabbit." Gu Yihan saw a black rabbit not far away and ran towards it. She herself didn't lack meat to eat, but she didn't dare to take it out.

I ran incredibly fast, pounced on it, and it took several tries to finally pin the rabbit down with my belly. I was so happy!

With great effort, he picked up the rabbit with his hands and was about to get up.

"Love Party, will you really marry me?" a coquettish, affected voice came from behind.

Gu Yihan froze instantly in the grass, too afraid to move. Was this her cheap father?

She wasn't sure either, because many people in the village had changed their names since the founding of the People's Republic of China; too many names included "Party" or "founding of the nation."

Quietly prick up your ears and listen.

"As long as you give me a big, healthy baby boy, I'll immediately divorce my wife and marry you, my little vixen." It was Gu Aidang's voice.

"Oh my god, it's confirmed, it's my cheap biological father." Gu Yihan thought to herself, wondering which way to go.

Soon after, a series of heavy breathing and groaning sounds were heard from the hillside.

Gu Yihan hunched over and slowly and carefully moved out, afraid of making a sound.

Gu Aidang's hoarse voice came through: "So, who's better, me or your short-lived man?"

The woman gasped, "You rascal, you're really something, aren't you ashamed?"

Gu Yihan wanted to poke her own ears right now, so she sped up, worried that she would throw up her dinner from the night before.

After descending the mountain, before even reaching home, he started calling out, "Grandma, Grandma, look what I caught!"

Grandma Gu quickly took her granddaughter's little basket off her back and saw that it contained a large, fat rabbit. Her face lit up with a smile as bright as a chrysanthemum as she exclaimed, "Such a big rabbit! Did you go deep into the mountains?"

I checked on my granddaughter with concern and found nothing wrong.

Gu Yihan calmed her wildly beating heart and said, "No, Grandma, this rabbit is so clumsy. I pressed down on it with my belly and it couldn't run anymore."

She didn't mention seeing her adoptive father on the mountain, since it wouldn't interfere with her life anyway. Others might think she was selfish and cold-hearted if they knew.

But in this era, it's too difficult for girls to go out and explore.

My cousin is thirteen years old this year, and her family has started looking for young men from the surrounding villages. This is not the life she wants.

"Where's your sister? Didn't she go out to dig for wild vegetables with you? Why did you come back alone?" Grandma Gu looked behind me and didn't see Gu Meng.

Gu Yihan didn't hide anything for Gu Meng: "My sister shook me off at the foot of the mountain, and I didn't see her when I came down."

Grandma Gu was furious when she found out.

While cleaning the wild rabbit, he cursed, "That's an ingrate. Her mother corrupted her. You were so young and she dared to abandon you. Isn't she afraid something will happen to you?"

Gu Yihan walked up to Grandma Gu and said, "Grandma, don't be angry. I'm fine. Don't get upset and ruin your health. It's not worth it."

Grandma Gu especially loves listening to her granddaughter talk; it warms her heart. "Okay, Grandma won't be angry."

Grandma Gu didn't cook all the wild rabbit; she only used half and left the other half hanging in the well.

The whole family was gathered for dinner, but Gu Meng didn't know when she had gone home.

Gu Aidang saw the meat and said, "Mom, where did the meat come from? It's quite a feast today."

Hanhan was lucky enough to catch it on the mountain.

"That's amazing. Mengmeng, next time you go up the mountain, I'll go with you and share in your luck," Gu Hao said while eating.

Gu Yihan deliberately said it was at the foot of the mountain, without going up the mountain.

Everyone was busy eating rabbit meat and no one was talking.

After finishing his meal, Gu Hao said contentedly, "This is the best meal I've had all year."
