Chapter 341 Marriage Certificate
After finishing breakfast, Gu Yihan tidied her clothes with her handbag and went to the service station to report for duty.
As I approached Political Commissar Zhao's door, I heard it open.
I glanced up and saw Zhang Mei walking out, her hair neatly combed and dressed in clean, tidy clothes.
"Auntie, are you going to the city?" she asked in surprise.
Zhang Mei didn't expect to run into Gu Yihan as soon as she went out, and touched her cheek embarrassedly.
He whispered, "I'm going to the women's director's house to get my marriage certificate."
"Get a marriage certificate?"
Zhang Mei nodded. She noticed that Gu Yihan was wearing a military green pseudo-military uniform, which made her fair face look even more beautiful.
He assumed she was like him, visiting the women's director's house, and said with a smile, "Xiao Han, you haven't gotten a marriage certificate either?"
Upon hearing this, Gu Yihan paused for a moment, then laughed and shook her head, saying, "I accept."
Zhang Mei gave an awkward laugh: "I saw you dressed so formally, so I thought you were like me and hadn't gotten a marriage certificate yet."
Gu Yihan smiled and said, "Auntie, I'm going to the service station."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Mei's lips curled up slightly, and she waved her hand, saying, "Come on, it's on our way, let's talk as we walk."
Gu Yihan nodded, and the two walked side by side.
Zhang Mei began, "The Women's Director said that the staff of the Civil Affairs Bureau specially came to our door to provide services for those of us who haven't obtained marriage certificates and have difficulty getting around."
Upon hearing this, Gu Yihan paused for a moment, then laughed.
In order to complete her mission, Li Yajing even moved her office to the family compound.
As Zhang Mei walked, she kept muttering, "In our time, getting married was just a simple meal at home with relatives and friends. There was no such thing as getting a marriage certificate."
Gu Yihan smiled and said, "Auntie, getting a marriage certificate in this day and age is a guarantee for us women."
Zhang Mei thought for a moment and nodded, saying, "You're right, it won't work without a marriage certificate."
After saying that, she glanced around and whispered in Gu Yihan's ear, "Bai Yun is not Chief of Staff Gao's first wife."
"When the country promulgated the monogamous system 50 years ago, he divorced his first wife on the grounds that it was an arranged marriage and there was no affection between them."
Upon hearing this, Gu Yihan looked at Zhang Mei in disbelief and whispered, "Divorced?"
Zhang Mei nodded: "In those days, there were no marriage certificates; marriages were all arranged by parents and matchmakers."
“The state abolished the polygamous system, allowing only one wife, so he found an excuse to divorce her.”
After saying that, a look of disdain flashed across Zhang Mei's face: "You say it's an arranged marriage with no feelings, but when he slept with that woman and had that child, why didn't you say there were no feelings?"
"Without feelings, how could his thing get erect?"
Gu Yihan: "..."
Zhang Mei glanced at Gu Yihan, who was filled with shock, and sneered, "You wouldn't have guessed, would you? Chief of Staff Gao doesn't only have Gao Yunlin as his son."
“His three sons from his first marriage are all very successful, none of them are any less capable than Gao Yunlin.”
"It's a pity, they don't recognize him."
After saying that, Zhang Mei couldn't help but laugh gleefully.
Gu Yihan forced a smile and said with a grin, "I can't tell at all."
“Auntie, if you hadn’t told me, I really wouldn’t have guessed that Aunt Bai was… a concubine.”
"Not a concubine, but an extramarital affair."
Gu Yihan: "..."
Zhang Mei glanced at her, a slight smile playing on her lips.
He explained, "Bai Yun didn't have any official documents for taking a concubine, and Chief of Staff Gao's parents didn't acknowledge her, so she could only follow him as his mistress without any official status."
Gu Yihan swallowed hard and couldn't help but whisper, "Why does it feel like we're living in ancient times?"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Mei burst out laughing: "It's only been a few years since liberation! Fifty years ago, which wealthy man didn't have a few concubines?"
"Besides, there are too many people like Chief of Staff Gao and Bai Yun."
"What?"
Doesn't the military care?
Upon hearing this, Zhang Mei gazed intently ahead.
He chuckled softly: "Manage? How?"
"The Marriage Law abolishes arranged and forced marriages and implements freedom of marriage."
"Therefore, after the Marriage Law came into effect in 1950, many officers in the military divorced their wives and married the field nurses they worked with day and night in the military."
After saying that, Zhang Mei laughed.
He chuckled and said, "If only our old Zhao weren't so lazy and filthy, and washed his smelly socks and shorts more often, he wouldn't have driven away the people who liked him."
Upon hearing this, Gu Yihan's lips twitched involuntarily.
After hearing what Zhang Mei said, her impression of Political Commissar Zhao improved a lot.
Putting everything else aside, the fact that he didn't get rich, promoted, or divorce his wife makes him much better off than people like Chief of Staff Gao.
Gu Yihan stopped in her tracks as she approached the service station.
He smiled and said to Zhang Mei, "Auntie, after you get your marriage certificate, have Political Commissar Zhao take you to the city to take a wedding photo and put it on the certificate."
Zhang Mei smiled and urged, "Go in quickly."
Gu Yihan nodded and turned to enter the service station.
When Liu Yufang saw Gu Yihan enter, she quickly stood up and waved her hand, saying, "Sister-in-law, over here."
Gu Yihan looked in the direction of the sound and quickly walked up to her.
Liu Yufang quickly handed the price list and keys to Gu Yihan.
She explained with a smile, "Auntie, Director Chen had to take the day off today, and he asked me to give this to you before he left."
Gu Yihan took it and said, "Thank you."
Liu Yufang smiled and waved her hand, saying, "Sister-in-law, you're too kind."
After saying that, she walked out of the counter, took Gu Yihan's arm, and headed towards the daily necessities counter.
"Sister-in-law, this is your work area."
Gu Yihan took out her key, opened the counter, and walked in, glancing at the fully stocked shelves.
Liu Yufang leaned over the glass cabinet and winked at Gu Yihan.
He whispered, "Sister-in-law, if you're too busy, just call out and I'll come right away."
Upon hearing this, Gu Yihan smiled and nodded, "Okay."
Liu Yufang was afraid that Gu Yihan would be too embarrassed to ask her for help.
He explained with a smile, "Sister-in-law, what you sell are all daily necessities such as toothpaste, laundry detergent, soap, towels, sugar, and thermos flasks."
"It's busier than the tobacco, alcohol, and stationery counters, so we usually help each other out when we're not busy."
The woman standing next to Gu Yihan at the tobacco and alcohol counter frowned slightly upon hearing Liu Yufang's words.
She doesn't like others making decisions for her without her consent.
She said coldly, "Liu Yufang, when you speak, can you please stop bringing up irrelevant people?"
Upon hearing this, Liu Yufang paused for a moment, then glanced at Qin He in surprise, wondering what she had said that offended her.
Gu Yihan glanced at Qin He, whose face was cold and expressionless.
She roughly knew why the other person was unhappy.
After thinking for a moment, he smiled and patted Liu Yufang's hand, urging her, "Yufang, you should go back now. I'll definitely call you when I'm too busy."
Liu Yufang replied cheerfully, "Okay, sister-in-law, I'll head back now."
