Chapter 54 The Shen Family's Scheme (Part 1)

Chapter 54 The Shen Family's Scheme (Part 1)

February 17, 1969, the first day of the Lunar New Year

Gu Yihan got up early.

Today she was going to mail something to Grandma Gu. She took out the things she had bought before the New Year to check: a bag of assorted candy, two pairs of canvas shoes, two jars of canned food, and a piece of dark gray, flawed cloth.

Gu Yihan walked into the post office and saw Zhao Ju yawning. Amused, she asked, "Sister Ju, is there any mail for me?"

When Zhao Ju saw Gu Yihan, she pretended to be angry and said, "So you still know to come? I haven't seen you for a month."

Gu Yihan took an apple out of her backpack, leaned slightly forward, and presented the apple with both hands, saying jokingly, "Then I'll apologize to you."

Zhao Ju couldn't help but laugh when she saw Gu Yihan's funny pose: "Pfft."

Then, with a serious expression, he took the apple, covered his mouth, and pretended to be coy, saying, "That's more like it."

Zhao Ju took four letters from under the cabinet and handed them to Gu Yihan: "Two of them are from the military region?"

Gu Yihan was also surprised. She took the letters and looked at the addresses. One was from Kuncheng Military Region and the other was from Pengcheng Military Region.

Gu Yihan didn't look at the Pengcheng Military Region's book; she directly opened the Kuncheng Military Region's book, which was written by Lu Huailin.

The gist of it is that I want to ask for her detailed address so I can send her money.

The clue she provided last time was very important; it led to the dismantling of a human trafficking gang, and the Kuncheng Police Station gave her a reward of 200 yuan.

Gu Yihan thought to herself that she lived alone and couldn't just give her detailed address to a stranger, so she said, "Sister Ju, could you give me a piece of paper?"

Zhao Ju handed her the letter and the envelope.

After receiving the letter, Gu Yihan wrote down the post office address on the letter paper, and then went to the post office to pick up the money order.

Gu Yihan then wrote a letter to be mailed to Gujia Village and handed the package and letter to Zhao Ju: "Sister Ju, thank you for your trouble."

Zhao Ju rolled her eyes at Gu Yihan: "What's the trouble? If it weren't you, it would be someone else. This is the job. I really envy you, you can even take a vacation."

She patted the package and said helplessly, "We can only take turns on duty."

Gu Yihan was about to say that she was startled by the "bang" sound at the post office entrance when she heard a sharp voice, "Ah... where did this dead dog come from?"

Gu Yihan was worried about Mao Mao: "Sister Ju, Mao Mao is still outside, I'll go check on her."

Zhao Ju liked Mao Mao's gesture and said, "Go take a look quickly. If I could get away, I would go with you."

Gu Yihan nodded and walked out of the post office. She saw Mao Mao baring its teeth at her and growling, "Woof, woof."

Upon seeing that it was Gu Yihan, Lin's mother said sarcastically, "I was wondering why this dog looked so familiar. It's Xiaohan's dog, Mao Mao?"

Gu Yihan ignored her and walked to Mao Mao's side, calling out softly, "Mao Mao."

Seeing Gu Yihan's aggrieved expression, Mao Mao stretched out its paw and offered it to her, letting out a whimper.

Gu Yihan looked down at its paws and saw obvious footprints. She felt extremely distressed and looked coldly at Lin's mother: "You stepped on it. Apologize to Mao Mao."

Lin's mother said dismissively, "Who told it to block the way? They really treat this beast like a treasure. It's like a little beast raising a dog."

Gu Yihan couldn't hold back any longer and stepped forward, slapping Lin's mother across the face.

The force was so great that her hand hurt. She shook her hand and said, "You're really shameless."

Then Gu Yihan deliberately fanned her nose with her hand and said, "You ate fecal water this morning and went out without rinsing your mouth, didn't you?"

Before Lin's mother could react to the sudden slap, the burning pain on her face brought her back to her senses, and she said, "You little bitch, aren't you...?"

Gu Yihan interrupted her before she could continue: "Think it over before you speak. You want me to report you to the Revolutionary Committee for letting your daughter have an affair."

When Lin's mother heard Gu Yihan say that she would report it to the Revolutionary Committee, she stopped talking.

Gu Yihan turned around and called to Mao Mao, "Let's go home. I don't know which beast stepped on Mao Mao."

After walking a few steps, Gu Yihan turned around and smiled wickedly at Lin's mother, "Oh, right, I forgot to tell you, I have a camera, and I just happened to take a picture."

"Your daughter is with different men..." Gu Yihan deliberately patted her hand, giving her a look that suggested she could imagine what was going on.

Lin's mother's face turned deathly pale instantly, while Lin Fang, watching from the side, felt a surge of satisfaction.

Zhao Ju, standing at the mailroom door, saw Gu Yihan about to leave and quickly called out, "Xiaohan!"

Seeing Zhao Ju waving, Gu Yihan had no choice but to go over. She asked mysteriously, "You really took a picture?"

Gu Yihan was exasperated and said, "You just asked that?" She thought Zhao Ju had something else on her mind.

Zhao Ju nodded anxiously.

Gu Yihan looked at her speechlessly and said, "It's fake. Okay, I'm going home now. We can talk again when we have time."

The holiday passed quickly, and Gu Yihan returned to her old habit of slacking off at work.

The new factory manager, surnamed Luo, is a retired soldier in his forties. He continues the military style of doing things, and is very decisive and efficient.

In just two months, the deputy factory director's men were swiftly removed from their positions, and the entire machinery factory's work efficiency improved.

This also caused anxiety and unease among the factory's leadership.

Shen Family

When Teacher Shen returned home, she saw her parents sitting on the sofa and asked, "Dad, Mom, is there something you wanted to do that made you call me home so urgently?"

When Shen's mother saw her, her eyes immediately reddened.

Looking at his graceful daughter, Mr. Shen said, "I've arranged a marriage for you with Director Xing from the Revolutionary Committee."

"Go to the school tomorrow to submit a marriage application, and get the marriage certificate with Director Xing."

Teacher Shen looked at her father with disbelief and said, "Dad, Director Xing is about your age, you know perfectly well that I..."

Mr. Shen had no patience to listen to his daughter's ramblings and interrupted, "Don't you know your age? If you keep delaying, even Director Xing won't want you anymore."

Mrs. Shen grabbed Mr. Shen's arm, looking at him with choked sobs, and said, "Old Shen, our daughter is only 25 years old. Director Xing is old enough to be her father. This is ruining her life!"

Father Shen shook off his arm, which was being held, and looked at Mother Shen with icy eyes: "Think about Zixin. Do you want to watch our son's future be ruined?"

As Teacher Shen watched the light in her mother's eyes dim little by little, she knew that her mother had chosen her brother over her.

Teacher Shen was panicked, but she could only force herself to remain calm and looked at her father, saying, "Dad, has something happened at home? Is it necessary to use Director Xing from the Revolutionary Committee?"

Shen's father didn't hide it and told him about how he and the people in the factory were reselling steel.

Teacher Shen looked at her father with horror and screamed, "Dad, how could you do such a thing? You're undermining socialism!"

Mr. Shen looked at Teacher Shen with sharp eyes and sneered, "What you eat, wear, and use—isn't it all the best?"

Teacher Shen was so frightened by Mr. Shen's gaze that she took a step back.

Mr. Shen suddenly stood up and said to her, "The family has a TV, a refrigerator, a bicycle, and everyone has an imported watch."

The father approached her step by step with overwhelming pressure, and Ms. Shen stood there, her body ice-cold, unable to move.

Seeing the fear on his daughter's face, Mr. Shen turned to look at Mrs. Shen with a mocking gaze: "You eat my food, drink my water, and you've been working for years. How much have you ever given me?"
