Chapter 37 Royalties

"I... I was just saying it casually, why are you taking it so seriously, really..."

Huang Eryuan didn't dare to speak loudly, only muttering to himself.

"What are you muttering about? Speak up!" Chen Zhaodi narrowed her eyes, her tone turning dangerous.

Huang Eryuan felt a chill on his neck and a murderous aura emanating from it. He immediately backed down and said, "I think Xu Junhui is really good! Why don't we buy a bicycle for our family? That would make it much more convenient to go back to the countryside in the future."

"Buying a bicycle isn't that easy. Besides, even if you have the money, you still need a ticket. Bicycle tickets are hard to get."

Huang Eryuan knew that the hardest part of buying a bicycle wasn't saving money, but not having a ticket. However, after hearing that Xu Junhui's family had bought a bicycle, he started to feel a strong urge to buy one too.

Undeterred, he continued, "We can trade with other workers, let's keep an eye out for them. Look, you admire that young man who bought a bicycle."

"Well, our eldest and second sons are at the age where they should be getting married. I don't expect them to each buy a bicycle, but if the family has one, people will look at us more favorably when we go out to meet potential partners!"

Huang Jianguo and Huang Jianjun wanted to say that they weren't in a hurry to get married, but as soon as they opened their mouths, Huang Eryuan glared at them.

Okay, they understand now. Huang Eryuan wanted to buy a bicycle, partly because they were of marriageable age, but more importantly, he probably wanted one himself and was using them as an excuse.

Chen Zhaodi didn't say whether she agreed or not, but only said perfunctorily, "Let's talk about it when we have bicycle tickets."

Huang Eryuan was not disappointed when he heard this; instead, he lowered his head and seemed to be deep in thought.

Seeing that everyone had almost finished eating, Huang Qinqin went back to her room to get the two royalties that had arrived that day.

She happily said to them, "Ta-da! Look, I got two coffees today, but I haven't opened them yet."

"Dad, Mom, can you help me open this and take a look?" Knowing that Chen Zhaodi and Huang Eryuan would be especially happy every time she received royalties, not because of the money, but even if the royalties were just a notebook, they would be happy.

Because their submission was successful, they were especially proud of Huang Qinqin and thought their daughter was exceptionally wonderful!

So every time Huang Qinqin received her royalties, she would specifically leave some for them to open. After they finished opening the royalties, Huang Qinqin would keep the rest for herself; they simply enjoyed the pleasure of opening the royalties.

Chen Zhaodi and Huang Eryuan happily accepted the envelope and carefully opened it.

"Wow, the payment for this article is so high! Look, honey, it's a ten-yuan note!"

This wasn't the first time Chen Zhaodi had received payment for her writing, but this was the first time she'd received a large sum of money; previously, she'd only received five or six yuan at most. Often, it was only two or three yuan, plus some other coupons.

Huang Qinqin hadn't expected there to be so many, and quickly moved closer to Chen Zhaodi: "Mom, can you check if there are any other tickets? Let me see which newspaper sent them back."

Chen Zhaodi then looked down and checked the envelope again, and found that there were two jin of national grain coupons inside: "It really is, there are two jin of national grain coupons. Here you go, daughter, see where it was sent from."

"I should submit more articles to this company next time; the payment is just too much!"

Everyone's attention was on Chen Zhaodi, and no one noticed that Huang Eryuan had also finished distributing his royalties.

However, Huang Eryuan's manuscript fee wasn't much of a surprise; it contained three yuan, a cloth ration coupon, and half a jin of sugar ration coupon.

Huang Qinqin took the envelope and looked at the return address, feeling a sense of "I knew it."

"It was sent by the People's Daily. This is the first time I have received payment for my writing from the People's Daily."

"No wonder. The People's Daily is from the capital, so it's not surprising that they pay more for articles."

Everyone nodded in agreement.

Huang Qinqin knew that luck played a large part in her successful submission. After all, every city has been pushing for rural outreach programs lately.

Like herself, she was always worried before, but now that the matchmaking was successful and she no longer has to be afraid of being forced to go to the countryside, she can finally calm down and start writing and submitting articles.

I guess it's because there aren't enough submissions, so they're digging up the previously rejected manuscripts to see which ones are usable.

She was so certain mainly because she hadn't submitted any articles to the People's Daily for more than half a year. She had sent so many articles, but none of them had been accepted. Huang Qinqin didn't plan to waste her time here.

It would be better to spend her time on other small newspapers. Although the fees are not high, they add up. Although she doesn't have a job, her monthly fees are higher than many workers. However, only Huang Qinqin and her parents know about this income. Even her two brothers only know that she occasionally receives fees for her writing.

Chen Zhaodi told Huang Qinqin not to say it. Although everyone had a good relationship now, money could be a powerful motivator, and she was afraid that things might change in the future.

Anyway, all these royalties belong to Huang Qinqin. Although Huang Qinqin often uses her royalties to help support her family, she can't let Huang Jianguo and Huang Jianjun think that Huang Qinqin earns a lot of royalties and it's only right that she gives them out.

Let them think that Huang Qinqin only earns a few yuan a month in royalties, and that all of it has already been used to support her family; that would be the best outcome.

Seeing that it was getting late, Chen Zhaodi told Huang Jianguo and the others to pack up their things and returned both royalties to Huang Qinqin.

“Daughter, keep the royalties for yourself. Now that your older brothers have jobs, save them up as your own money.”

Huang Jianguo and Huang Jianjun also agreed: "Yes, little sister, keep your own royalties safe. Your older brother/second brother will have their own salary in the future, so you don't need to worry about the family."

Huang Qinqin didn't feel that the responsibility for the family was solely hers. Since her two older brothers said so, she just listened to them.

......

A few days passed in the blink of an eye. Today is Sunday. Xu Junhui has come over a few times in the past few days, each time bringing her some food.

Today was the day they had agreed to go to the movies, so Huang Qinqin got up early this morning to pick out clothes.

After trying on many outfits and finally choosing the right clothes, Huang Qinqin started styling her hair.

Huang Qinqin wanted to change her hairstyle, which was always double braids, but she couldn't think of anything to do. She couldn't help but sigh in frustration.

Chen Zhaodi saw that Huang Qinqin got up early in the morning and didn't come out after washing up, so she guessed that Huang Qinqin was probably getting ready in her room.

After knocking on the door and entering, I saw Huang Qinqin looking worried and distressed.

"What's wrong? Why do you look so worried? Tell Mom and see if I can help you think of a solution?"

Huang Qinqin slumped over the table, looking somewhat dejected, and said, "I want to change my hairstyle, but I don't know how..."
