Chapter 7: Picking Up a Child

Huang Qinqin walked up to the fabric counter, smiled, and asked softly, "Hello, sister, does the supply and marketing cooperative sell defective fabric right now?"

The sales clerk behind the counter looked up at Huang Qinqin in front of her. Her round face and big, watery eyes sparkled as if they could see right through people.

Her straight nose, luscious lips, and two adorable dimples give her a playful and cute look. Her voice is also sweet, making people feel like they are bathed in a spring breeze.

The saleswoman beamed with joy when she heard Huang Qinqin, a young girl, call her "sister," and replied, "Oh dear, I'm almost forty, you can just call me auntie!"

Huang Qinqin said with a sincere expression, "Really? Looking at you, I thought you were only in your twenties! I was afraid of making you sound old!"

The sales clerk was so pleased with Huang Qinqin's flattery! She covered her mouth with her hand, laughing uncontrollably: "You really know how to talk! You want flawed fabric? We don't have any right now, but a new batch will arrive in a few days. How about I reserve some for you?"

"Really? Thank you so much, sister! What's your name, sister?" Huang Qinqin asked excitedly in a low voice, her hands clasped tightly together.

The sales clerk said nonchalantly, "What's the big deal? Defective fabrics are meant to be sold. I think we get along well, so I'm just keeping a few for you. I can't keep more."

Leaving about ten feet should be fine, but the color might be hard to guarantee. Just call me Aunt Hu, my name is Hu Yulan.

Hu Yulan then asked Huang Qinqin, "Are you buying the defective fabric for yourself or for your family? I'll see if I can try to reserve some suitable colors for you."

Huang Qinqin was surprised that Hu Yulan would consider the color issue in advance, and she was even more grateful to her. She quickly replied, "I plan to make clothes for my parents. It would be best if I could save a suitable color."

"If you don't have any, that's okay. I have two older brothers. If the color doesn't suit Mom and Dad, they can use it too. Thank you so much, Aunt Hu!"

Aunt Hu waved her hand and said to Huang Qinqin, "It's no big deal. Come back in a few days. I reckon the goods will be available in another three or four days."

Huang Qinqin gripped the strap of her small handbag and nodded: "Okay, I'll come back in a few days."

After she finished speaking, Huang Qinqin glanced at the clock hanging on the wall of the supply and marketing cooperative and saw that it was already past four o'clock in the afternoon.

Just then, someone came over to buy cloth, so he said to Hu Yulan, "Aunt Hu, it's getting late, I'll head back now and come back to see you another day."

Hu Yulan was busy attending to customers, so she only replied, "Okay, be careful on your way back," before continuing to serve her guests.

Huang Qinqin was still secretly smiling as she walked out of the supply and marketing cooperative, thinking that today's trip was definitely worthwhile. She was overjoyed at the thought of being able to buy the defective fabric in a few days.

Although the family wasn't poor, they didn't have new clothes every year because cloth coupons were scarce. Usually, new clothes were made for her and her two older brothers, but Huang Ermin and Chen Zhaodi hadn't worn new clothes for two years.

Huang Qinqin hummed a little tune and skipped along her way home. Halfway there, she saw a group of people gathered there and couldn't help but walk over.

Huang Qinqin stood on tiptoe and tried to look inside, but after a lot of effort, she still couldn't see anything.

Huang Qinqin changed her strategy and asked the aunt next to her, "Auntie, what's going on in here? Why are so many people gathered around?"

Upon hearing someone ask, the aunt next to her immediately recounted vividly, "I heard it was two people fighting over a child! The woman said she didn't know the man."

But the child wouldn't let go of the man. I bet they're unmarried and having an affair, and they don't want to admit it!

Huang Qinqin listened with shining eyes, and couldn't help but sigh inwardly: It's definitely more exciting to watch outside than at school, where there's not much gossip to hear besides studying.

At most, I would listen to gossip about my classmates' older siblings, but nothing as juicy as this!

Just then, Huang Qinqin thought she heard her second brother, Huang Jianjun's, voice. She listened carefully, and it really was him! No way, she'd stumbled upon her own family's gossip?!

Huang Qinqin strained with all her might, trying desperately to squeeze in, but failed twice. Then, her eyes darted around, and she suddenly shouted, "Hey? Isn't there money on the ground ahead? It looks so good! Did someone drop some money?"

With a whoosh, everyone's attention was drawn to Huang Qinqin. Taking advantage of the distraction, Huang Qinqin quickly squeezed in, wanting to confirm whether the person inside was Huang Jianjun.

After Huang Qinqin squeezed in, she saw Huang Jianjun being hugged by a little dumpling. The dumpling had a delicate, chubby face that looked incredibly cute.

He was wearing clothes made of polyester, which showed that his family was quite well-off.

When Huang Jianjun saw Huang Qinqin, he breathed a sigh of relief and said anxiously to her, "Little sister, please help me report this to the police. I just saw this child being pulled by her and crying. He didn't want to go with her, so I came over to see what was going on."

The child then clung to me and wouldn't let go. The woman wouldn't say what her relationship with the child was, and she didn't want me to take the child to the police station. I'm in a real bind!

After listening, Huang Qinqin frowned and observed the woman discreetly. Her clothes were new and without patches, and she was wearing a watch, so she shouldn't be a human trafficker.

She looks about the same age as her and probably isn't the child's mother, but she won't say what her relationship with the child is, which is really strange.
