Chapter 87 The less something is, the more one desires it.

After hearing Huang Qinqin finish recounting her dream, Zhang Yumei and Xu Weiguo felt their worldviews collapse.

Xu Weiguo was even more convinced that this was just a dream, but a voice inside him kept telling him that it wasn't a dream, it was real.

Xu Weiguo knew that he and his third brother's family did not get along well, but he never expected that they would do this to him. They wanted him dead!

Zhang Yumei berated and beat Xu Weiguo, saying, "It's all your fault! It's all your fault! If you hadn't always been soft-hearted and given in time and time again, how could Xu Weimin have worked in the Revolutionary Committee, and how could he have had the ability to frame us!"

Xu Weiguo knew that Zhang Yumei must be feeling terrible, so he let her hit him to vent her emotions.

After calming down, they unanimously decided to find the Little Red Book first. After all, if what was written in their dream was true, then in a few hours, that book would become the beginning of their family's nightmare.

Huang Qinqin remembered that the things Xu Jingui brought were wrapped in a bag, and they found them after searching for a while.

Xu Weiguo took a deep breath, unwrapped the outer packaging, and sure enough, inside was the Little Red Book.

By this point, everyone present understood that something had probably been tampered with inside. Xu Weiguo, his hands trembling, opened the book and found that the portrait of the great man inside had indeed been marked with a large red "X"!

Zhang Yumei was so frightened that she couldn't even stand up. If Huang Qinqin hadn't helped her up, she probably would have sat down on the ground.

How could they be so cruel!

Xu Weiguo didn't know either, not even when his parents asked him for his demobilization pay; not even when he signed the letter severing ties with his family; not even when Xu Weimin came to cause trouble recently.

Xu Weiguo couldn't deny that he still held a sliver of hope for them. He hoped they would suddenly realize that they were, after all, family, bound by blood, and would get along well from then on.

That's just how people are; the less they have, the more they crave it.

Xu Weiguo never experienced parental love growing up, and neither did Xu Weimin, with whom he never got along.

So he was closer to his second sister from a young age because he felt that she was just like him, disliked by their parents. So he tried his best to be good to her.

When he goes to join the army and gets married, he will also ask Zhang Yumei to take care of his second sister if possible.

Not long after, I heard the news that my second sister had eloped with someone else!

Xu Weiguo didn't believe it at first, but then his grandparents insisted that his second sister had eloped with someone else, so he believed them.

But now, as he looks at the book in his hand, he knows that all his hopes and desires are ultimately just wishful thinking.

Seeing that they were all immersed in sadness, Huang Qinqin had no choice but to take the initiative to break the atmosphere.

He said seriously, "Dad, Mom, I know you must be very sad right now, but we're not really safe yet. We need to clean up this book and then wait for them to come over."

"And they definitely came prepared. I'm afraid that if they don't find the book, they'll resort to other means."

"Okay, I'll go make breakfast first, and I'll burn this catalog of great people, so there will be no evidence."

"Then, while you still have time, check everything in the house thoroughly. If anything seems even slightly sensitive, throw it away!"

Xu Junhui thought Huang Qinqin's words made a lot of sense. Since they were determined to frame them, they probably wouldn't give up easily. After all, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Xu Weiguo and Zhang Yumei sprang into action, and Zhang Yumei also woke up Xu Hongxia, but didn't tell her what it was about.

They just asked her to check all her belongings, because Xu Weimin might come and cause trouble with the Revolutionary Committee members.

Xu Hongxia was so frightened by these words that she broke out in a cold sweat, because she did indeed have some sensitive things on her hands.

Seeing her expression, Zhang Yumei knew something was wrong: "You don't actually have any contraband, do you?! How could you be so bold!"

Xu Hongxia lowered her head and answered timidly, "It's just some books. My classmate gave them to me. She said it would be a pity if these books were destroyed, but there's really no big problem..."

"Which classmate gave it to you?! Don't contact that classmate again! If there wasn't a serious problem, why wouldn't she have kept it herself instead of giving it to you?!"

Zhang Yumei never imagined that there was a time bomb in her daughter's room all along. If Qinqin hadn't asked them to check everything in the house, their whole family might have been in trouble this time!

Xu Hongxia realized what was happening at this point, but she still felt that her classmate wouldn't harm her, since they had always gotten along quite well.

However, she no longer dared to keep these books and gave them all to Zhang Yumei.

Zhang Yumei looked at the seven or eight books, her face turning green. She pressed on anxiously, "Are they all here? Are there any more? Don't be complacent. You must know that any one of these books you left behind could cost our whole family our lives!"

Xu Hongxia's eyes darted away after Zhang Yumei's words: "Mom, it's not as serious as you make it out to be. These are just some old books..."

Hearing her say that, Zhang Yumei understood perfectly well that there was more to it than met the eye. She truly hadn't expected Xu Hongxia to be so brainless.

She's already made herself so clear, yet she still keeps these books. Isn't that serious?

If it weren't serious, why would universities be shut down? If it weren't serious, why would so many people be branded as intellectuals because of these books? If it weren't serious, why would no one dare to keep these books?

She really didn't know whether to call Xu Hongxia naive or stupid!

Zhang Yumei looked at her with eyes full of disappointment: "Are you going to take them out yourself, or should I burn all your books?"

Xu Hongxia exclaimed in disbelief, "Mom! How could you burn all my books?!"

“I’ve already given you most of the books. You only said that someone might come to check, but Dad is the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau. Who would dare to actually search our house!”

"What's wrong with keeping one or two copies? If I destroy them all, how will I face my classmates in the future!"

Seeing that Xu Hongxia was yelling at her because of these books, Zhang Yumei was really disappointed in her.

I also feel that I have spoiled her. I used to think she suffered a lot, so now that I have the means and ability, I will try my best to treat her better.

The result was that she was raised to be so naive. So what if she was a deputy director? Even if you were the director of the Public Security Bureau or the chairman of the Revolutionary Committee, you would still die if someone wanted to frame you and had the evidence.

How could she not understand such a simple truth?!
