"What's wrong?"
When Zhang Yumei saw Xu Weiguo come in, she vented all her anger on him, accusing him: "It's all because of the good daughter you raised! She actually wanted to keep these books!"
Zhang Yumei angrily threw the book into Xu Weiguo's arms. Xu Weiguo didn't care at first, after all, he thought that Xu Hongxia could have any books, at most some vernacular novels.
But when he opened the book and saw its contents, he could no longer remain calm. He asked seriously, "Where did you get these books?!"
When Xu Hongxia saw her father questioning her, she felt very sad and said unhappily, "They're just some ordinary books, why are you all so mean to me?!"
"Don't try to change the subject! I'm asking you where these books came from?! Do you know these books are now contraband?!"
Xu Hongxia pouted and said unhappily, "It's just some old books and foreign language books. My classmate gave them to me, and she said there wouldn't be any problem."
Looking at Xu Hongxia, who was still oblivious to her fate, Xu Weiguo finally understood why Zhang Yumei had argued with her.
He decided to ignore Xu Hongxia for now and said to Zhang Yumei, "Take these books to Qinqin and tell her to burn them. I'll check all the remaining books in her room now."
Seeing that Xu Weiguo actually started searching her room, Xu Hongxia realized that there might really be something wrong with the books. But she still didn't believe that her classmate would harm her.
She always shared any good food she had with her classmates. They were the best of friends. Her classmates probably didn't know that these books were so sensitive right now! Xu Hongxia kept making excuses for her in her mind.
Huang Qinqin had originally asked her parents to check the house, just in case someone took advantage of the situation. But when Zhang Yumei came over with a huge pile of books, Huang Qinqin was stunned.
Before her mind could even process what was happening, her hands were already tearing the book apart and putting it into the stove, all the while asking, "Mom, where did these books come from?"
Zhang Yumei sighed and said helplessly, "They belong to Hongxia. She said they were given to her by her classmate. Just now, I asked her to take all these books out and burn them, but she was still unwilling."
"What did she tell me? If she burned them all, she'd never be able to face her classmates again. She even said her classmates said there was nothing wrong with the books. It really makes me furious!"
Huang Qinqin didn't know what to say. She'd already discovered several foreign language books. Even if nothing happened tomorrow, if someone else found them, who knew what kind of trouble it would causeā¦
However, Huang Qinqin comforted her, "It's okay, Mom. At least we've found out now. And Hongxia was probably just deceived."
Zhang Yumei was well aware of this, but she said, "Even if she was deceived, it's because she was stupid! Accomplices are still criminals!"
"Forget about her, let's burn all these books quickly. I'll start the other stove too, so we can burn them together faster."
"Yeah, I was just thinking that if there's only one book, we don't need to use two stoves."
......
After finishing breakfast, Xu Jingui rubbed his hands together and said to Xu Weimin expectantly, "Dad, how about I go to work with you today? You guys should be there in a little while, right?"
Xu Weimin glanced at him and said, "What are you going there for? You can't help anyway."
"I can watch the show! I'll be happy to see them suffer. Besides, it might not even be time for work by the time it's over."
Xu Weimin thought about it and realized it made sense. He was afraid that if he went to work and Xu Weiguo wasn't home, it would give him a chance to escape.
Yesterday afternoon, I made a special trip to the Revolutionary Committee to ask them to come early so that I could treat them to a meal at the state-run restaurant after I finished my business.
"Alright, go ahead if you want, but don't get involved, since it's not proper to do it under any circumstances."
"no problem!"
......
Xu Hongxia realized she might have done something wrong, but her family ignored her, and she couldn't bring herself to apologize. Since the books were already burned, she figured she might as well move on.
I was having breakfast when I heard a rapid knocking on the door.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
"Open the door! Open the door now! We've received a tip-off that someone has anonymously reported you, alleging you're involved in subversive activities. Open the door now!"
Even though they weren't close to the door, they could hear everything the person outside was saying clearly.
Except for Xu Hongxia, everyone else remained calm, knowing that they would come.
Xu Hongxia, on the other hand, was trembling all over. She genuinely believed that her mother's earlier statement that the Revolutionary Committee would come to search the place was a joke.
Now that someone had actually come to her door, Xu Hongxia felt a cold sweat break out all over her body in an instant.
Xu Weiguo opened the door, and a large group of people were standing outside. There were five or six people from the Revolutionary Committee alone, and Xu Jingui was among them.
People from the neighboring courtyards also came out to see what was happening.
They were familiar with this scene, after all, the compounds where they lived were mostly assigned to them by their work units after capitalists had confiscated their property.
"I knew they weren't good people. They might be the descendants of capitalists, otherwise how could the whole family live in a large compound by themselves!"
"Whether they are capitalists or not is unclear, but there are definitely problems. Look, the Revolutionary Committee people have come directly here."
"Old Xu doesn't seem like that kind of person. He's no different from us in everyday life. Wasn't this courtyard a reward from the army for his meritorious service?"
