Bonus Chapter: A Spontaneous Trip (Part 4)

The Lin family courtyard was bustling with activity that evening.

"Uncle, the broth you made smells amazing!"

"Then look at your uncle, did he work as a chef for all these years for nothing?"

"You're getting cocky just because I said you're fat. You're like an old Wang praising his own melons!"

Aunt Bonnie kicked her own husband; she really doesn't know how to be humble.

"Look, we're all family, what's there to be embarrassed about?"

"That's right, we all know how powerful it is!"

Bonnie joined in the commotion and even got slapped by her mother. Gu Ye habitually rubbed his wife's arm, which made everyone burst into laughter.

"By the way, Uncle, how's Uncle Chen's restaurant? I haven't heard from him in a while."

"Master Shen? Alas, he's met with unfilial descendants and will be gone after the New Year."

Bonnie's uncle also felt a pang of sadness, as he had spent a considerable amount of time with Master Shen.

"His youngest son was lured into gambling, which led to him losing everything, his wife and children falling apart, and almost dragging down his two older brothers. Master Shen was old and had a heart condition. When debt collectors besieged his home demanding repayment, he couldn't catch his breath and passed away."

"how so?"

Bonnie felt quite upset. She and Master Shen had known each other for so many years and were close friends despite their age difference.

“It’s good that he went; it saves us trouble. Otherwise, the other kids in the family would have a lot of resentment towards Master Chen because of that kid, and things would have gotten quite tense.”

Bonnie's uncle also visited Master Shen a few times. They were like teacher and friend. Who would have thought that Master Shen, who had always been doing well, would encounter such a thing in his old age?

"This is an example. The children and grandchildren of the family must never get involved in gambling or drugs. Those are things that ruin the family."

Bonnie's father added earnestly, "There are countless examples of this throughout history."

"Big brother is right, these kinds of things are really off-limits."

Uncle Bonnie nodded in agreement. The Lin family children were taught from a young age that there were certain things they absolutely could not do.

"Lin Yu, how is Da Bao doing now? Has he made up with his wife?"

Lin Hui recalled what had happened before and asked a question.

“Da Bao’s wife took the child back home. I gave him a final warning: if he still doesn’t understand, he’ll have to leave with nothing and go with his mother. He’s completely out of his mind, he can’t tell right from wrong. Luckily, the house wasn’t transferred to his name back then.”

"What happened?"

Bonnie was completely confused. Had Da Bao gotten into trouble with his mother again?

"Da Bao's mother cried and begged to live with Da Bao and his family, and Da Bao felt sorry for his mother, so he agreed. As a result, not only did his mother go, but her family members also came over from time to time to freeload meals and make a scene. Da Bao's wife couldn't take it anymore, so she took the child and went back to her parents' home to get a divorce."

Lin Hui accompanied Lin Yu to the hospital once, but he still couldn't understand what Da Bao was thinking. Why couldn't he let go of his mother and her family?

"A man like Da Bao shouldn't get married. He's ruining a good family's daughter. How good is his mother to him? When he was little, he was raised by his grandmother. His mother didn't take much responsibility for him besides giving birth to him. He doesn't even protect his own wife and children, so why did he get married? He's letting down both his wife and children."

Bonnie was quite blunt; that's what she really thinks: people who lack a sense of family responsibility shouldn't get married.

“I’ve warned him before, he doesn’t even care about me, the father who raised him and paid for his education. Erbao is not like him, he only pays the monthly allowance for his own retirement, and ignores everything else.”

He does often bring his children back to visit us and his grandparents, and he gets along well with his younger sister. He's talked to his older brother a few times, and the older brother even scolded him. After that, the younger brother stopped caring about his brother, and the two don't see each other much anymore.

Lin Yu was also troubled. She had two sons and a daughter. Although her daughter wasn't her biological child, they had gotten along quite well over the years. The two younger ones were like siblings, even closer than the older one.

"Erbao has never been a talkative child, but he's very sensible. He always wanted to go out of the island to see the world and worked hard to get into a university in Beijing. I thought he could stay there and develop his career, but I didn't expect him to come back."

"Erbao said he's seen the world and is satisfied. His home is on an island, and he wants to be closer to home. I asked him before he graduated, and that's what he told me. Being closer to home means he can take care of his grandparents and parents."

After listening to her older brother's words, Bonnie repeated what she had said to Erbao earlier.

"Yes, Erbao and his wife often bring their child over, and they help with chores when they get home."

When Bao Ni's mother mentioned her second grandson, she smiled broadly; such a child is truly adorable.

"Okay, your brother and sister-in-law are lucky. No matter what, it's much better."

Gu Ye glanced at his wife; those words were quite hurtful.

When the family gets together, the most talked-about topic is the children, and their children's children. They also mentioned Lin Tao, Bao Ni's second brother, a rather eccentric person. He's indecisive; whatever he wants to do, it just stays in the realm of thought.

He used to listen to his wife when she objected, but now that his children object, he has to listen to them. In short, he has many ideas, but few that he can actually implement. He says he doesn't want to listen to their arguments, so he has no choice but to compromise. I really don't know how he managed to serve in the military for so many years.

Because they didn't want their parents to feel upset, Bao Ni and the others didn't mention her second brother's family much, as they were also a typical example of their parents' failed parenting.

There's nothing particularly noteworthy about the rest; they live ordinary lives, with occasional arguments, which are unavoidable. In any case, the Lin family descendants are quite good; at least they are of good character and relatively filial.
