Chapter 118 Gu Feng's Family of Four

The day after Bao Ni received Gu Da Sao's letter, Gu Feng and his family of four had already boarded the ship.

They endured a lot of hardship on the journey. They bought hard seats on the train and didn't dare to use connections to get sleeper berths. They had already been reported, and if they weren't careful, what awaited them wouldn't be a simple transfer out of Beijing.

"Ugh... ugh..."

Gu Feng's wife felt like she was going to vomit to death on the boat; she had never suffered like this in her entire life. Looking at her eldest daughter, who was always frail and prone to illness, and then at her youngest son, who was listless from seasickness, she felt a surge of resentment.

If her daughter hadn't gotten sick again, would she have been so anxious? If she wasn't anxious, she wouldn't have spoken so rudely to the nanny, been reported, and ended up hiding in this godforsaken place. Her mother said that if she hadn't gone to a remote island, she might have been sent to the countryside.

"Qu Jing, are you feeling better? Would you like some more water?"

Gu Feng also regretted it. He should have listened to his grandfather back then, left the military unit in Beijing earlier, transferred to a lower-level unit for training, and accumulated military merits. Sigh...

Qu Jing drank some water. She couldn't blame Gu Feng anymore. Her promotion was ruined, and she was even sent to an island—all because of what she said. Although she blamed her daughter's illness for making the wrong statement, in Gu Feng's eyes, it was all Qu Jing's fault.

"Gu Feng, do you think Gu Ye and his wife will come to pick us up?"

"Won't."

Gu Feng knew Gu Ye too well. He didn't have any brotherly affection for him. When they were young, he was always criticized by his grandmother because of him. It was already a sign of Gu Ye's magnanimity that he didn't cause him any trouble. How could he possibly come to pick him up?

"Why not? You're still his cousin, and you can't be two people with the same surname, Gu."

Qu Jing was still thinking of asking Lin Baoni for help. Lin Baoni was a local and had lived in the family compound for many years, so she had some connections. Even if her status was a bit low, Gu Ye's status was high.

"That doesn't apply to Gu Ye. If it weren't for his cousin, he would have changed his surname. Why would he care whether he has the surname Gu or not? Gu Feng knows this very well. Gu Ye has no sense of belonging to the Gu family."

"well……"

"well……"

The couple sighed simultaneously, looking dejected.

Gu Panpan, who was watching coldly from the sidelines, was puzzled as to why her parents liked to rely on others so much.

Eight or nine-year-old Gu Panpan is frail and prone to illness. She's also quite sensitive and easily senses both kindness and malice from those around her. Especially this time, her mother's words subtly blamed her for getting sick, otherwise…

Gu Panpan didn't argue with her mother. What difference would it make? They couldn't go back to Beijing anyway. And without the help of her great-grandparents, who knew what would become of her parents?

After a piercing blast of the ship's horn, the ship docked.

Gu Feng pulled his daughter up, picked up his son, called to his wife, and slowly walked out, saying they could get the luggage later.

"Gu Feng, I'm afraid to walk, I'm afraid I'll fall."

Qu Jing looked at the roaring sea below the diving board and dared not take a step.

"Don't fall. Just follow me. Stop dawdling. There are so many people watching."

"I'm just scared, I want to go home, I don't want to go to the island, boohoo..."

Qu Jing broke down in tears and squatted motionless on the deck.

"Then you can go back by yourself. I can't go back."

Gu Feng lost his patience. Holding his son and leading his daughter, he slowly walked ashore.

The onlookers on the shore watched the beautiful woman crying uncontrollably and began to discuss it amongst themselves.

"They're afraid to walk on the springboard, aren't they? I was scared the first time I did."

"What's there to be afraid of? Just keep moving forward boldly. Stop being so dramatic."

"However, this woman is really fair-skinned. Compared to her, we are two different colors."

The women on the shore pointed and whispered. Qu Jing on the boat had cried enough, but she couldn't really go back; she didn't want to be sent to the countryside. Gu Feng kept going down the river to move his luggage, no longer caring about Qu Jing.

The two children waited for their father on the shore, also watching over the luggage. Gu Panpan didn't understand what was wrong with her mother. Why was she squatting there crying, ignoring her younger brother's discomfort? Wasn't her brother her favorite child?

Gu Feng took all the luggage down and walked up to Qu Jing. "Have you decided whether to get off the ship or go back?"

He was tired too, and didn't feel like comforting her.

Qu Jing stood up on her own, but almost fell again; her legs were numb. Gu Feng helped her up and led her off the boat.

On the shore, a pile of luggage and two helpless children made Qu Jing want to cry again.

"Can you please cheer up and keep an eye on the kids? I need to find a car to get my luggage."

"So what if I cry? I've come all this way to this godforsaken place, what more do you want?"

Qu Jing was so aggrieved. There was so much dust and the place smelled terrible. How could she stay there?

"You have such a loose tongue, always blurting things out. Do you really want to get reformed? If that happens, no one will be able to save you. Besides, don't you know why you came here?"

Gu Feng had never thought his wife was so unreasonable. How could a highly educated woman, a high school teacher, and a role model for students, have become like this?

Gu Feng was a battalion commander in Beijing, but after being transferred here, he became a deputy battalion commander, which can be considered a demotion.

Gu Feng took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. There was no other way; he had to deal with it himself. Although he was somewhat unwilling, he and his wife were one; if Qu Jing was reported, he couldn't escape either. If it weren't for his grandfather, he would have had to retire from the army.

He attended military academy. What can he do after leaving the army? He's already used to military life.

"Deputy Battalion Commander Gu?"

"Yes, I am Gu Feng."

Gu Feng cleared his mind of distractions and focused on the present.

"I'm here to take you to the family compound. Where's your luggage?"
