Chapter 12 Cleaning Up the Family Compound

In Kyoto, Gu Ze was busy preparing for Gu Ye's wedding.

On the island, Lin Baoni was also preparing to take her mother to see her new house.

After finishing breakfast, Bonnie and Lin's mother walked to the gate of the military family compound, where they would live for the rest of their lives.

Looking at the large residential compound, Lin Baoni sighed inwardly, "With so many people, there's bound to be trouble!"

Bao Ni went to the guard room first. The young soldier on duty asked Lin Bao Ni's name and who she was looking for. Lin Bao Ni gave the name Gu Ye. The young soldier immediately took out a registration book and asked Lin Bao Ni and her mother to sign it.

Gu Ye had already spoken to the guards in the guardhouse yesterday, explaining that Lin Baoni was a military dependent and would be living in the family compound from now on. He also told them to register her information so that it would be easier for her to come and go in the future.

The military family compound consists of uniformly built red brick and tile houses, arranged in neat rows, like rows of model soldiers standing tall.

On islands, the situation is special; officers of company rank and above can have their families accompany them. Therefore, there are many houses and many people.

The frontmost houses are for the families of company and battalion-level officers, followed by the regimental-level families, while the commander's house is at the very back.

Gu Ye was a battalion commander. The courtyard he was assigned had three main rooms and one wing room on each of the east and west sides. One room was used as a kitchen and bathroom, and the other as a storage room.

Bonnie took the key Gu Ye gave her, found the house he was allocated according to the house number, opened the door and entered the yard.

Gu Yefen's house is at the far west end of this row, with four other households to the east.

The yard was small and bare, with nothing in it, indicating that the house hadn't been lived in for some time.

There are three main rooms. The middle one should be the living room, and there is one room on the east and west sides, which should be bedrooms.

The living room was empty; there wasn't even a chair.

Bonnie pushed open the door to the east room, and there was nothing there except a double bed. She then pushed open the door to the west bedroom, and this time there wasn't even a bed.

Unconvinced, Lin Baoni walked into the courtyard and pushed open the door to the two side rooms. The two side rooms were completely empty, without even a pot, let alone any other kitchen utensils.

Although she can't cook and doesn't plan to cook at home, she still can't be without any kitchen utensils!

What is Gu Ye trying to get me to look at? These empty rooms? Bonnie is now seriously doubting Gu Ye's intelligence. Is he just not smart enough or not good at life?

When Gu Ye pushed open the door and entered the courtyard, he saw Lin Baoni staring with wide, round eyes and her mouth slightly open. What had she seen that made her so surprised?

"You're here. How was the visit? Is there anything we need to add?" Gu Ye wasn't good at these household matters and hadn't paid attention to them before.

"Commander Gu, you should be asking me what's in this house, right? Besides a bed, it's missing everything," Lin Baoni retorted angrily. This was outrageous.

At this moment, Lin's mother came out. She had just looked around the room and knew what was missing.

He smiled and said, "The yard is nice, and the rooms are spacious, but there are a lot of things missing. We have a bed, but the living room still needs a sofa and a small table. In addition to the bed, the bedroom also needs a wardrobe, a desk for writing, a stool, and so on."

"The kitchen is empty, there isn't even a pot," Lin Baoni complained.

Gu Ye blushed, a rare sight indeed. Although it wasn't noticeable because of his dark skin, he could feel it himself.

"Well, I don't really know either. We can go to the logistics department now and apply for anything we need," Gu Ye quickly added, trying to salvage the situation.

"Let's go then, let's finish quickly, we still need to put things together." Lin Baoni resigned herself to her fate and hurried off to pick things out; there were too many missing, enough to carry for a while.

The three of them arrived at the logistics department, took out their slips of paper, and went to the warehouse to choose what they needed.

There are two rooms in the house, but only one bed, so we have to choose one. There's a wardrobe, a wooden sofa and chairs (which Bonnie noticed), a matching small coffee table, a dining table, stools, a washbasin stand…

Bonnie wasn't good at decorating the house, but she still knew what the necessities were.

Bonnie will lead the way, and Gu Ye will mark the route from behind. They'll find a few soldiers to pull them back together later.

After Bonnie finished picking out the big items, Lin's mother also picked out a lot of small things that she could wait for in daily life.

Cutting board, rolling pin, chopstick holder, chest of drawers, iron pot... I chose everything that I could use.

Finally, several young soldiers helped push the things to Gu Ye's house using a cart.

After thanking the young soldier, Gu Ye was instructed by Bao Ni to buy a washbasin so that the room could be cleaned before the furniture could be placed.

Gu Ye went to the supply and marketing cooperative again and bought an enamel basin, a kettle, a thermos, soap... He bought everything he could think of that he could use and carried it home in big bags.

Bonnie was instructed by her mother to start cleaning.

Both Bonnie and Gu Ye were good at tidying up, and in no time, even the ceiling was spotless.

Bonnie then instructed Gu Ye to place the wardrobe in the location she specified, and put a table by the window, which could be used as a writing desk and a dressing table, killing two birds with one stone.

The west room also had a bed, but no wardrobe. Gu Ye picked out a bookshelf and a table himself, and this room will be used as a study for the time being.

The kitchen was fitted with a pot and some small items that Lin's mother had picked out, making it look less empty.

There is no running water in the residential compound; drinking water has to be carried from a well. This is no problem for Bao Ni, as she is very strong. Her family also carries water, and she does this all the time.

"Gu Ye, won't it be cold sleeping in a bed in winter?" Bao Ni remembered that she slept on a kang (a heated brick bed) in her room, not a bed, and that the seaweed house was warm in winter and cool in summer, much more comfortable than these brick houses.

"Are you cold? I didn't notice. I always sleep on a bed in the barracks. If you're not used to it, I can have someone build a kang (heated brick bed)." Gu Ye thought for a moment, and he really didn't remember whether sleeping on a bed was cold in winter. Anyway, they had winter training, so even on the coldest days, they didn't feel that cold. They were used to it.
