Thanks to the joint efforts of the military and the island's first team, the application was approved quickly.
"Comrade Lin Baoni, this agreement is yours, please keep it safe."
Bonnie took the agreement from the logistics manager, read it carefully, and found no problems.
"Thank you for your support, leader!"
"I should thank you. Alright, enough with the formalities. Let me introduce you to someone. This is Lu Liang, the logistics chief. You can contact him if you need anything in the future."
The leader introduced Bonnie to the quartermaster, so the two could get to know each other and have more opportunities to interact in the future.
"Comrade Quartermaster, please guide me in the future."
"Comrade Lin, let's cooperate!"
The funds provided by the troops were also managed by the quartermaster. When needed, an application was made, and both sides kept a record of the expenses.
Having explained everything, Bonnie applied for a batch of land reclamation tools and left the logistics department with her father.
"Dad, is Old Man Gen's house over by the beach still empty?"
"Hmm, you need it?"
"Yes, we need to have our own place to stay; we can't always meet up outside!"
Bonnie's dad thought about it and realized that the seaweed house had been empty for quite some time and wasn't being used for the time being, so it would be fine for them to use it.
"Okay, I'll give you the key in a bit. You guys can tidy it up yourselves. Apart from being a bit dusty, the house is pretty good. It has everything you need."
"Thank you, Dad. You're the best dad, number one in the whole world!"
Seeing his daughter's energetic and outgoing personality, Bonnie's dad felt quite pleased.
After getting the key, Bonnie led her men to prepare their lodgings the next day after training ended.
"Sister Bonnie, does that mean Grandpa Lao Gen's house will be ours from now on?"
"You think you can just borrow it from us? You're dreaming!"
"Hehe... You can borrow it. There's a fruit tree in Old Man Gen's yard, and the fruit it bears is delicious. He used to always come and ask for some fruit..."
Lin Hai enthusiastically introduced the advantages of the house to everyone, interspersed with his childhood memories, and his friends also revealed embarrassing things Lin Hai had done in the past.
"Alright, you guys split up and clean up the house, the yard, and everything inside and outside. Han Weidong, you're in charge of recording our team's accounts. Make sure you remember everything in detail, including the year, month, and day, what funds were applied for, and what was done. Keep it clear. Zhang Yuanchao, you help me organize it. The accounts must be clear."
"Understood, we will try our best." Zhang Yuanchao took the lead and shouted a slogan.
"Lin Xiaofeng and the others, come with me to the family compound. I'll get some food rations from my family in advance, and I'll give you an extra meal at noon. I've applied for some wasteland. Starting tomorrow, we'll train in the morning and clear the land in the afternoon. If you want to eat your fill, you'll have to work hard."
Bonnie led a few boys to her house to fetch grain. How could they work if they weren't well-fed? If young boys don't eat enough and do heavy work, it's easy to damage their health, and it will be too late to make up for it later.
"Bonnie, I heard you're going to grow seaweed. If it's successful, can I come work for you?"
Mrs. Zhang next door is too afraid to take a small boat to the island to clear land; she's very anxious about it.
"Sister-in-law, this is just an experiment. If it succeeds, there will be more work to do later. Don't worry, we'll take it slowly."
"Hmm, no rush, I believe in you."
"Thank you for your support, sister-in-law. I have something to do at home, I'll talk to you later."
Bonnie opened the gate to the courtyard. It was the first time the boys had come to the family compound, and they were all quite curious.
"Go ahead and get busy. Call me if you need anything."
Alright!
Bonnie led a few boys and had each of them carry a little of the food she had prepared beforehand: corn, wheat, sweet potatoes, millet, dried vegetables, dried fish... quite a lot of odds and ends.
"Sister Bonnie, this is too much! What will you eat if you take all this?"
"These need to be kept in the books, and they'll have to pay me back next year. They're worried I'll go hungry, so they're working hard."
Bonnie locked the door and led the group back to Grandpa Lao Gen's house.
"How's the packing going?"
"Everything is ready. Old Gen's house has three large rooms. The middle one is the main room, and there is a room on each side, all of which have a kang (heated brick bed). The east side is divided into two rooms, one with a kang and the other without, so it is empty."
Lin Hai was very familiar with this house; he used to come here often.
"Okay, well done. Lin Hai, you take Han Weidong and the others to the mill to grind this grain. Weigh it before grinding and record the transaction."
"Okay, Bonnie, we're off now."
Lin Hai and his group left, but the remaining guys couldn't just sit idle.
"Let's go up the mountain and get some firewood for lunch later."
Bonnie carried a basket on her back, looking for anything to eat. She'd be back around 7 PM; these teenagers had enormous appetites. Right now, all she could do was ensure they were full, not necessarily well-fed—they needed to eat first, then worry about the rest.
The first meal should be a good start.
Bonnie sent the boys off to gather firewood while she headed towards the rocks to see if she could catch any big fish or something, so she could stew a pot of it for lunch, make some flatbread, and save some food.
Bonnie put on her rain boots and started browsing the rocks.
With good luck, Bonnie moved the rocks and caught a fish over a foot long, round and plump, the kind with few bones and lots of meat. She continued searching, finding palm-sized fish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and large conch... Bonnie was strong and quick, and soon her basket was full.
After washing her hands, Bonnie picked up her basket and walked back home. It was so cold.
"Bonnie, the food is ready. What did you get from the beach?"
Lin Hai curiously took the basket from Bonnie's hand. It was so heavy that he almost dropped it.
"You guys, pack up these seafood. Qian Shan, you make some cornmeal. For lunch, we'll stew fish and make flatbread. Put a bowl of wheat flour in the stew too. It's the first time we've cooked, so let's celebrate. We won't have this kind of good thing again."
