After the kelp was completely dried, Bao Ni and her team weighed it. The 30-plus acres of planting area yielded nearly 30,000 jin of dried kelp, which could be sold for 10,000 to 2,000 yuan.
"Next year, we'll expand the planting area; we need to get at least a hundred acres!" Han Weidong is now full of energy and confidence.
Bonnie looked at these boys and saw that they had grown a lot in the past year. They were no longer ignorant and reckless teenagers, but had their own ideas and goals.
"Sister, we're loading 25,000 catties of seaweed onto the ship tomorrow. What about the rest?"
Lin Hai was unaware of Dr. Yang's situation and was wondering why so much was left behind.
Bonnie slapped her forehead. She realized she'd been forgetting things lately, and felt like she'd forgotten something. She knew she had, so she quickly said it, otherwise she'd forget it again.
"Let's discuss it with the logistics team. Apart from the supplies for the troops in Beijing, we'll send the rest to the soldiers stationed on the various islands." Bonnie hadn't been to the other island garrisons. She'd heard the conditions were tough. Some islands were small with few people stationed there, relying entirely on supplies. Others had fishermen, so living conditions were a bit better.
"Han Weidong, tomorrow you take Li Gang and a few others, along with the soldiers, to be in charge of shipping the seaweed. After that, accompany Teacher Gao to the university to take care of some business."
Bonnie is going to see Dr. Yang by boat tomorrow. It's been several years since she left, and I wonder how she's doing.
"I guarantee I'll complete the mission!" Han Weidong even gave a proper military salute, which was a bit funny.
Bonnie thought to herself, "Is this still the same young master from Beijing? His skin is tanned dark, his hair is cut into a buzz cut, and his clothes aren't as stylish anymore, all wrinkled and messy."
Alright, never mind them. She needs to go back and pack some things to take to Dr. Yang and the others.
"Gu Ye, are Dr. Yang's children also on the island? Is there a school there?" When Dr. Yang and her family left, they had a son and a daughter, who were a little older than Liu Jiu. I wonder if they have had any more children in the past few years.
Gu Ye had been to Dr. Yang's island once. Commander Zhao was doing a good job there, but the place was too remote, the conditions were harsh, and resources were scarce.
Gu Ye thought for a moment. There were schools on the island, but there weren't many teachers and classrooms were limited. Many children were in the same class, with one grade attending classes while the other did their homework. He noticed that the desks and benches were quite old and worn.
Bonnie knew what she was doing and brought some food, supplies, and extracurricular books for the children. She also took a considerable amount of wheat and millet, which would help nourish both the children and adults. With two consecutive bumper harvests, Bonnie's family had enough food to last two or three years, and they could plant new crops every year.
The next day, they split into two groups. Han Weidong and his group went to the city, while Bao Ni took a supply ship to Little Bear Island where Dr. Yang and her group were located.
"Sister-in-law, it's windy outside, you should go inside. It'll take a while to get there." The young soldier looked at Bao Ni, worried that she might catch a cold.
Bonnie didn't feel cold, but she still went inside; the wind was quite strong.
I drifted off to sleep, and when I woke up again, I felt the boat had slowed down. Could it be that we had arrived at our destination?
"Sister-in-law, we're about to dock, be careful." A familiar voice; this young soldier is quite thoughtful.
Bonnie quickly replied, "Okay, thank you!"
Bonnie quickly packed up her belongings. There were three bags of food: one bag of corn, one bag of wheat, and one bag of millet and soybeans, weighing several hundred pounds. There were also quite a few other odds and ends; she was wondering how she was going to move them out later.
After getting off the boat, Bonnie looked at the pile of things in front of her. No matter how strong she was, she couldn't carry hundreds of pounds of stuff at once.
"Sister-in-law, whose house are you going to? I come to the island often and know most of the people there. I can take you there." It was the same young soldier from before. Seeing Bonnie looking worried, he offered to help.
"Thank you so much. I'm going to Dr. Yang's house, you know?" Bonnie thought this young soldier was very nice, a good person, and kind-hearted.
The young soldier scratched his head, a little bewildered. "Your sister-in-law is too kind."
Dr. Yang's house, isn't that Commander Zhao's house? He really knew. "I know, sister-in-law, wait for me a moment, I'll go up to the boat and get a trolley."
"Tap tap..."
The young soldier turned and ran off, before Bonnie could even express her gratitude. "It's alright," she thought, "I'll ask him his name later and invite him over for dinner when we get home."
Bonnie forgot that her cooking skills were terrible, yet she still wanted to treat people to a meal.
Bonnie and the little soldier went to great lengths to transport the things to Dr. Yang's house, but unfortunately, the door was locked and no one was home.
"Sister-in-law, wait here for a moment, I'll go check, she might be in the infirmary." The young soldier often came here and knew the area well.
"Okay, thank you for your help. I'll wait here for a bit." Bonnie watched the young soldier walk away before taking a look around at her surroundings.
The houses were brick buildings constructed by the military, arranged in neat rows. At this time of year, the yard was bare, devoid of vegetables. Occasionally, the crowing of chickens could be heard, among the few livestock present; at least no pigs were heard squealing.
"Are you a relative of Dr. Yang?"
Bonnie was lost in thought when she was interrupted. She glanced at her sister-in-law next door, who was staring at her curiously. She was thin and dark-skinned, with a pale and listless appearance.
"Hello, sister-in-law, I'm a relative of Dr. Yang. Do you live next door?"
Seeing that Bonnie's attitude was quite good, the woman took a few steps closer and said with a smile, "Yes, I'm Dr. Yang's neighbor, and my husband is the deputy regimental commander."
This person is from Northeast China; their accent is quite noticeable in this sentence.
"Isn't your sister-in-law a local?"
"Yeah, my husband and I are from Northeast China. He was assigned to an island, and later I followed him. We've been here for several years now, and you can still tell the accent from his voice?"
My sister-in-law's name is Zhang Dahua. She's been on the island for several years. At first, she found it very difficult to adapt and even considered taking her child back home. But later, she couldn't bear to leave; the child still needs his father. So she gritted her teeth and persevered. What else could she do? She couldn't just give up.
"Bonnie?"
"Dr. Yang!"
I hadn't seen Dr. Yang for several years, and he looked much more haggard and older.
"Come in, come in! This is such a surprise! I didn't expect you to come. Sister Zhang, I'm on my period right now, let's chat another day."
Although Dr. Yang was very excited, she didn't forget to greet her neighbors; this was a courtesy ingrained in her very being.
Zhang Dahua knew Dr. Yang's character well, so she quickly said, "Go inside quickly, we can talk anytime."
"Bonnie, I really didn't expect you to come. It must have been a long and tiring journey, the boat trip took several hours." Dr. Yang was genuinely happy; after so many years, she was finally seeing her old friend again.
“Dr. Yang, you forgot? I grew up on the island, so taking a boat is very easy for me. I have to go back by boat this afternoon. I brought you some things, mainly food, which I grew myself. Take some to help the children get better, and you should eat more too, you're too thin.”
Dr. Yang has already seen that pile of things, weighing several hundred pounds; it turns out to be grain.
They were deeply moved. Since they were transferred to this island, they had lost contact with many of their friends. They never expected that Bonnie would come back to visit them, bringing so much food and supplies.
