The period before the Lunar New Year was very peaceful. There was nothing much going on at the kelp farm, and the land on the island was turned over. The spore cultivation was still a bit short of completion, and it wouldn't be effective until next spring at the earliest.
Bonnie has nothing to do now. Gu Ye and the others are always busy at the end of the year, and this year is no exception. They were originally thinking about whether they could go to Beijing, but it seems that's not going to happen.
"Mom, what are you thinking about? The pot's boiling." Liu Jiu is pretty good now; she can even season simple home-cooked dishes. Although she's not as good as her dad, she's definitely better than her mom.
"Oh dear, it's really open! Mom wasn't paying attention. Liu Jiu, stay away, or the hot water will splash on you." Bonnie perked up and put the noodles into the pot.
Liu Jiu looked at her mother and noticed that she seemed listless. "Mom, are you sick?"
"No, Mom isn't sick." Bonnie was surprised that her daughter was so caring.
I miss my dad!
Sanqi, who had been playing at the entrance, said something very certain.
Bonnie was speechless. She had been thinking about Gu Ye, and that wasn't wrong. But was what Sanqi meant by "thinking" the same as what she meant by "thinking"?
After Sanqi finished speaking, he didn't look at his mother and continued playing with his toys, as if he hadn't said those words.
Bao Ni cooked the noodles, and the sauce was ready. The three of them sat on the kang (a heated brick bed). On the table was a large bowl of sauce, a dish of mixed vegetables, a dish of pickled vegetables, a few scallions, and a dish of soy sauce.
The two children don't eat scallions or sauce, they only eat noodles with gravy, and they slurp it down very quickly, especially Liu Jiu, who eats fast and quite a lot.
Sanqi watched her sister eat bowl after bowl and remembered what she had heard before: "Sister, if you eat too much, you won't find a husband."
"Then I won't look for a husband's family and will stay at home forever."
Liu Jiu was busy eating and didn't have time to deal with Sanqi.
Sanqi looked at his mother again, who was also eating bowl after bowl. He shook his head and said, "I need to earn more money in the future."
Bonnie looked at the boy and wondered who he had been gossiping about now.
"Why do you want to earn more money?" Bonnie teased Sanqi, waiting to see what he would say.
"If you don't earn enough, you won't be able to buy food, and you'll go hungry."
Is it because they think she and Liu Jiu eat too much and they're afraid they won't be able to support them in the future?
"I'll earn my own money." Liu Jiu glanced at San Qi, thinking that he wasn't very strong and couldn't possibly earn much money.
Sanqi saw distrust and contempt in her sister's eyes.
Hmph, eat your noodles in big bites, eat more, you need to have the same strength as your sister.
Bao Ni and her two children lived a simple and happy life, occasionally getting annoyed by Sanqi's sharp tongue.
Whether Gu Ye went to sea or had another mission, Bao Ni didn't know either; it was a confidential matter, and all she could do was wait.
With more than ten days left until the Chinese New Year, Bao Ni was getting anxious. Gu Ye had been gone for over a month, the longest he'd been gone in the past two years. Bao Ni couldn't go to the military base to ask; it wouldn't be in accordance with regulations.
"Bonnie, Bonnie..."
Hearing someone call her name, it sounded like it was Aunt Zhang from next door. Bonnie quickly put on her shoes, got out of bed, and ran outside.
"Sister-in-law, what's wrong?" Bao Ni noticed that Zhang's sister-in-law looked unwell, so something must have happened.
"Baoni, Battalion Commander Li, Battalion Commander Li..." Whether it was because she was running too fast or too emotional, Zhang's wife couldn't get a clear answer after running for a while, leaving Baoni extremely anxious. She didn't know if Gu Ye had left with Battalion Commander Li, or if something had happened.
"Sister-in-law, take a deep breath. What's wrong with Battalion Commander Li?"
"Battalion Commander Li has sacrificed his life! Waaah..." Sister Zhang finally said it, and at the same time, she burst into tears.
Bonnie was a little confused. "He's dead. Battalion Commander Li is dead." "Which Battalion Commander Li? Which regiment?"
"That's right, Li Jun from the Third Regiment, Battalion Commander Li. He even went through a divorce a few years ago, the year you gave birth to Liu Jiu." Seeing that Bao Ni couldn't tell who was who, Sister Zhang quickly explained it to her.
"Ah! That guy whose mother-in-law disliked his family background and was afraid of being implicated, how did he sacrifice himself, who was he with, was it my Gu Ye?" Bao Ni felt a chill run down her spine and her heart raced.
"What are you thinking about? It's not about your Gu Ye. He encountered an enemy ship that came to provoke him while he was at sea. During the confrontation, he was unfortunately hit by a bullet." Aunt Zhang had just heard some things from her husband, Old Zhang, and then came to find Bao Ni to go and see for themselves.
Bonnie breathed a sigh of relief. Although she felt a little sorry for Battalion Commander Li, she was still glad that it wasn't Gu Ye who got into trouble. Really, everyone is selfish.
Bonnie got dressed. Luckily, Liu Jiu and San Qi went to their maternal grandparents' house today, otherwise it would have been quite troublesome.
When Bonnie and the others arrived, there were already quite a few people inside, mostly the sisters-in-law who lived nearby, comforting Sister-in-law Li. Whether it had any effect was unknown.
Battalion Commander Li has four children. The youngest is even younger than Liu Jiu. The eldest son has already joined the army and is no longer on the island. There are two others, one a junior high school student and the other a primary school student. They are all crying around Sister-in-law Li.
Seeing the situation, Bonnie realized she couldn't squeeze in either, and more importantly, she wasn't good at comforting people. She decided to do something more useful.
Bonnie dragged Sister Zhang to find the logistics leader to find out what would happen to the wife and children in the case of Battalion Commander Li, and whether they could still live in the family compound. Bonnie didn't know much about these things, partly because she had lived a peaceful life for the past few years without any sacrifices.
"Comrade Lin, the families of soldiers like Battalion Commander Li who sacrificed their lives usually return to their hometowns and settle down."
"Return to your hometown? As far as I know, it seems that Battalion Commander Li's parents and brothers have severed ties with him and don't treat Li's wife and children well. In this situation, how can you expect to have a good life if you return to your hometown?"
