Chapter 173: The Problem of Defecation

Bonnie slept at the guesthouse. Luckily, she's not picky about beds and can sleep well anywhere.

After stretching and washing up, Bonnie bought breakfast at a state-run restaurant and went to the hospital.

"Commander Gu, do you need to go to the toilet?" Bonnie put the lunchbox on the bedside table and asked Gu Ye if he needed to relieve himself.

"Come on, honey, have you eaten?" Gu Ye was worried that Bao Ni wasn't eating well. His wife wasn't picky about beds and could sleep anywhere.

"You've already eaten. I bought you steamed buns and millet porridge. I'll help you wash up in a bit, then you can eat quickly." Bonnie carried Gu Ye to the bathroom. Now everyone is used to it and doesn't make a fuss anymore.

Bonnie helped Gu Ye wash up and put breakfast aside for him to eat by himself.

The patient in the next bed was still asleep, and the young soldier who was taking care of him had gone out to eat.

"Commander Gu, how are you feeling today?" The doctor who came to check on Gu Ye was his attending physician, followed by several young doctors who looked like interns. Isn't that how it's portrayed in TV dramas?

"Good morning, Dr. Fu. I feel much better and have some energy back."

Gu Yezhen felt much better than when she first woke up.

"Have you had a bowel movement?" Dr. Fu asked while writing something in his notebook.

"Huh? Well, not yet." Gu Ye looked at the group of men and women who had gathered around him, all waiting to hear if he had defecated or not. He felt a little embarrassed, but he couldn't not answer. "No." His voice was a little soft, and he felt inexplicably ashamed.

"Family members, if the patient feels the urge to defecate, he must do so promptly. Just be careful not to touch the wound." After saying this, the doctor went to examine Fang Hongqiang's body again.

Fang Hongqiang was seriously injured, with internal organs damaged.

"Have the family members arrived?" Dr. Fu looked at Comrade Fang Hongqiang, who was lying on the hospital bed and whose personal hygiene was not as good as Gu Ye's. The young soldier who came to take care of him was, after all, a young man, and he didn't do many things carefully enough.

"Doctor, my hometown is far away, and I haven't arrived yet." Fang Hongqiang thought of his wife, wondering if she could arrive safely. It was too far away, and she had never traveled far before.

Dr. Fu didn't say much, just asked him, "Did you pass gas?"

Fang Hongqiang answered quietly, "I did. I arranged it last night."

Dr. Fu found these two grown men quite amusing. They weren't afraid of the pain from such long wounds, and they didn't shed a single tear. Why were they so embarrassed to ask a doctor a question? It's just a physiological matter, isn't it?

"Now that you've passed gas, you can eat some liquid food. Pay attention to nutrition." Dr. Fu left after making his rounds, leaving a few people in the room. Gu Ye was still a little embarrassed. Besides, his condition made bowel movements inconvenient no matter what.

Bonnie took the lunchbox out to wash it clean. Before the injection, she went to the recycling station near the hospital. She had seen it yesterday and wanted to see if there was anything suitable for Gu Ye to sit down and have a bowel movement. He couldn't keep holding it in.

"Girl, what are you looking for?" The old man at the gate saw that Bonnie didn't seem to be looking for treasure, and her eyes weren't darting around.

"Sir, my husband is hospitalized and has difficulty moving around. I'd like to see if there's anything that will allow him to sit down and use the toilet."

Bonnie looked at the piles and piles of junk; there were no antiques or paintings like those described in the books, waiting for her to find a bargain.

"Oh, I see. Let me think, there seems to be a chair here before, that should work." The old man was still very kind-hearted. After saying that, he went inside to search, and after a few clanging sounds, he came out carrying a chair.

“Look, I remember there was a chair like this. You just put it on the toilet counter in the hospital, and the patient would sit on it and it would work.”

Bonnie looked at the chair; it was just an ordinary solid wood chair, the only special thing was that two of the wooden planks on top were missing, leaving a relatively wide gap in the middle, so that a person couldn't fall in—a simplified version of a toilet.

"Grandpa, thank you so much. How much is it?" Bonnie thought the chair was pretty good the more she looked at it, mainly because it was made of solid wood and was sturdy enough.

"Just give me two cents. Most of the people staying at the military hospital are People's Liberation Army soldiers." The old man didn't say anything else, but his words contained another meaning.

Bonnie bowed to the old man, then picked up her chair and left.

Bonnie first took the chair to the toilet to clean it, and then took it to the women's restroom to try sitting on it. It was fine.

Carrying the chair back to the ward, Gu Ye's injections were already in place.

"Wife, where have you been? Why did you bring back a broken chair?" Gu Ye looked at the broken chair in Bao Ni's hand. With such a big gap in it, how could it be comfortable to sit on?

“I went to the recycling station next door and found this chair. I’ll put it in the toilet later so you can sit down to poop.” Bonnie was too embarrassed to say directly that she could sit down to poop.

Gu Ye understood his wife's intention, and to be honest, it was really good.

After Gu Ye finished his injection, Bao Ni carried him to the bathroom, placed him on a chair that had been set up beforehand, and then left.

Gu Ye finally released his pent-up emotions comfortably; it had been too uncomfortable to hold it in.

After Gu Ye finished, Bao Ni brought him back to the ward and took the chair back.

"You rest for a while, I'll go get you your food." Bonnie took the lunchbox and left.

"Gu Ye, you're so lucky!" Fang Hongqiang was a little envious of Gu Ye; his wife was so good at taking care of people.

"Don't envy me, your wife is the same. When we're in the army, we can only take care of things at home. It's all up to my wife to manage things, both at home and outside. It's not easy for her. Brother Fang, didn't your wife come to join you?"

Gu Ye found it quite strange. Fang Hongqiang was the deputy regimental commander, and his family members were supposed to be able to accompany him to the military.

“Sigh, my family’s situation is quite complicated. My mother was a child bride. After she gave birth to my sister and me, my father went to fight in the army and we were never heard from again. My mother worked hard to raise us siblings. Later, she got sick and went blind. My wife stayed in our hometown to take care of her and didn’t come to join the army.”

Fang Hongqiang is not yet forty years old. He has four children, the oldest in junior high school and the youngest only four or five years old. His wife also has a hard life, with elderly parents to care for and young children to raise.

"If all else fails, bring your aunt out to get her eyes checked, or have her come with you to join the army. The military will approve that in your situation. It's also not good for the child to not see his father for many years. It's too hard for your sister-in-law to be alone."

Gu Ye felt a pang of sadness when he recalled Sanqi's words.

The two men remained silent for a while, each making a different wish in their hearts.

"Commander Gu, lunch is ready!" Bonnie came in carrying a thermos and a large lunchbox, followed by the young soldier who was taking care of Fang Hongqiang, also carrying a lunchbox.

Bonnie wiped Gu Ye's hands before pouring him a large bowl of chicken soup, complete with a generous amount of chicken meat. Instantly, the room was filled with the irresistible aroma of chicken soup.

Bonnie poured another bowl for Fang Hongqiang, "Brother Fang, have some too. It's been stewing all morning, and it tastes great."

Fang Hongqiang was too embarrassed to accept Gu Ye's chicken soup for free, so he quickly declined, "Sister-in-law, you should keep it for Gu Ye. I'll bring the food back with me."

"Eat up, I brought your portion. It's important to get well right now, so don't be shy." Bonnie really did bring Fang Hongqiang's portion.

"Eat up, Brother Fang. You're badly injured. Take this opportunity to recover properly so you don't develop any chronic illnesses." Gu Ye knew that since Bao Ni had already prepared a portion for Fang Hongqiang, he would indeed prepare his share as well.

Fang Hongqiang couldn't refuse any longer and accepted the kindness. It was really good!
