Where exactly is Political Commissar Wang's wife hiding?
This was an unsolvable problem. Bonnie observed for several days but found no clues. Life had to go on, and she couldn't keep focusing on this one thing. Gradually, Bonnie stopped keeping a close eye on Qi Meifeng. If she really had a problem, it would be exposed sooner or later.
Since June, the weather has been quite abnormal. Before that, there was a drought and no rain. But after that heavy rain, it's as if the heavens are trying to make up for it. The sky looks like it has a hole in it, and the rain just keeps pouring down. There are very few sunny days.
Bonnie touched the damp blanket. How annoying! The sun wasn't out, so the room was very damp, and the clothes and blankets always felt damp.
My Sanqi has developed eczema these past few days, and it's very itchy.
Bonnie added some firewood to the stove. In this hot weather, heating the kang (a traditional heated brick bed) was very uncomfortable; the room felt like a steam room. But not heating it wasn't an option either, as the blankets would get too damp, and the children wouldn't be able to stand it.
After Bonnie finished heating the kang (a heated brick bed), she opened the windows and doors to let the heat out. She then laid the quilts on the kang, which should help it dry out a bit.
When Bonnie arrived at the seaweed farming base, she called Han Weidong and the others to go to the small island together to see if there was any water in the ground that needed to be drained, otherwise the corn seedlings would be drowned.
“Baoni, let me go with you. More people means more work. Except for Han Weidong and the others, everyone else has been called back to work. Several plots of land on the island have been flooded.” Sister-in-law Yaru, holding tools, explained the situation to Baoni.
"Alright, let's go. Let's go early and come back early. We still need to visit the seaweed farm tomorrow."
Bonnie and her friends rowed a boat to the island.
The island is muddy everywhere, and it's been raining non-stop for the past two weeks, with hardly a sunny day. It's still overcast now, and I don't know if it will rain again.
Bonnie, wearing rain boots and carrying a shovel, walked ahead. The corn seedlings in the field were already quite tall, thankfully all alive, but weeds were rampant. This rain not only benefited the growth of crops, but the weeds also grew quite fast.
The group dispersed and looked around, trying to find ways to drain the water from areas with a lot of standing water.
Bonnie told them to keep working while she went to check on her few acres of land.
"Sister Bonnie, you go quickly, we'll take care of things here."
Han Weidong urged Bao Ni to leave, as she had six or seven acres of land, which was also very important.
Bonnie went over with a shovel. The other sisters-in-law didn't go to the island today, and it was quiet except for the squealing of pigs in the distance.
Bonnie walked to the wasteland she had cleared and looked around. Fortunately, there was water, but not much. If it didn't rain again, the water would dry up in a few days; if it continued to rain, it would easily flood. After praying to Mazu for rain last time, Bonnie prayed to Mazu for sunny weather.
It's no wonder people are greedy creatures; they always have endless demands that are hard to satisfy.
Bonnie, with a look of disapproval in her heart, checked the situation in the field. Besides water, there were also weeds; after the weather cleared up, there would be enough to weed for several days. Lost in thought, Bonnie unknowingly walked near the pond without even noticing.
Alright, since we're already here, let's go up and check if the water level has changed.
After taking only a few steps, Bonnie realized something was wrong. Someone had been here; there was a clear row of footprints on the ground, and they had just walked there. Bonnie perked up; she knew that apart from them, no one else had come to the island today, and they hadn't seen a boat.
Bonnie, carrying a shovel, followed the footprints. Just as she was about to reach the pool, she saw a man standing in front of her. Judging from his back, he was not short.
Hearing Bonnie's footsteps, the man turned around and came face to face with her.
"Who are you? How did you get up here?" Bonnie didn't recognize the person; he wasn't from the island.
"No comment!" he said, and then quickly ran to the other side of the pool.
Bonnie knew the whole island well and knew he was leaving from the other side, so she ran after him, forgetting Gu Yeqian's repeated warnings not to be reckless.
The man was quite fast, and his purpose was clear: he wanted to leave the island.
Bonnie wasn't slow either; the two arrived at the beach almost simultaneously. The man quickly boarded a small boat hidden by the rocks and rowed away rapidly. Bonnie was a step too slow and could only watch him leave, stomping her feet in frustration.
After Bonnie and Han Weidong reunited, they didn't mention what had just happened, to avoid causing unnecessary trouble.
There's plenty of water in the field, so weeding has to wait until the water dries up and the weeds can stand firm.
"Bonnie, the sun is out!" Sister-in-law Yaru had never felt the June sun so warm; before, she only felt uncomfortable from the heat.
"It seems that Goddess Mazu has blessed us. Judging from the situation, it shouldn't rain anymore." Bonnie was also happy. Although she was quite disappointed that she didn't catch anyone earlier, she was happy again now that the sun was out.
That evening, Bonnie and Gu Ye talked about what had happened during the day.
"Seriously, I almost caught up with that man, I almost let him get away, it's so infuriating."
Bonnie didn't see Gu Ye's face darkening. She kept emphasizing that she was just a hair's breadth away from catching that damned man and seeing if he would dare to provoke her again. As she rowed away, she even gave him the middle finger.
"Lin Baoni, do you know how dangerous it was today? What if that person was a spy and had weapons on him? Do you think you're invincible?"
Gu Ye looked at the furious Bao Ni, who was unaware that she was angry and was still agonizing over not catching the man sooner.
"How could I possibly be indestructible? Are you kidding me? I know I was a bit reckless today, but it was just a coincidence. We bumped into each other, and when he ran away, I instinctively chased after him without thinking too much."
"I'm sorry, I was wrong. Please don't be angry. I promise I won't chase after you next time; I'll stay far away from you."
Bonnie raised her right hand, making a peace sign, as if she were making a vow.
Gu Ye wanted to get angry, but his wife was out of sorts, looking completely bewildered, so he couldn't bring himself to be angry. He hugged Bao Ni tightly in his arms, wishing he could tie her to his waist so she wouldn't cause any trouble.
Bonnie patted Gu Ye's head. "Why are you so timid? I, Lin Bonnie, have lived two lives; I won't die so easily." But Bonnie also understood Gu Ye's feelings. He had lost too much and couldn't bear the risk of losing her.
"Alright, I promise that if I discover any problems in the future, I will report them to Commander Gu immediately and will never act on my own. If I violate this rule, I will be punished by cooking for a week."
Bonnie really went all out, even though she hates cooking the most.
"Are you punishing yourself or us? You're cooking for a week, and Liu Jiu and San Qi will have to protest first."
The two made up as before, but it was actually Gu Ye who was angry; Bao Ni, being so oblivious, didn't even realize it.
The next day, Gu Ye and Division Commander Yang reported what Bao Ni had discovered, and the troops began a secret investigation again.
Wang, the political commissar's wife, Qi Meifeng, has lost contact with Shi Jintang for some time and doesn't know where he's been. She's a little anxious.
