Gu Xuanyu's dishes were all packed up, and Liu Jiu finished her last bite of dumpling soup.
"Brother, I'll carry one."
Liu Jiu looked at the lunchbox in front of Gu Xuanyu; it was quite heavy.
"No need, my brother can carry it."
Gu Xuanyu looked at the girl who had just reached his chest, and the words "Brother, I will protect you from now on" still echoed in his ears. He truly loved this little sister.
"Brother, don't underestimate me! I might be stronger than you!" Liu Jiu waved her little fist.
Gu Xuanyu put the hat on Liu Jiu's head. It's very cold outside, so Liu Jiu shouldn't get cold.
The two of them walked out of the state-run restaurant together and headed towards the family compound.
"Xuanyu?"
Gu Ze happened to be coming home from get off work and saw Gu Xuanyu, so he called out to him.
"Dad, you're off work."
"Hello, Uncle. I am Gu Yun Chu. You can call me Liu Jiu." Hearing Gu Xuan Yu call him Dad, Liu Jiu knew that this was her father's older brother, and she should call him Uncle.
"Sixty-nine, welcome home."
Looking at the energetic and fearless Liu Jiu, Gu Ze felt the stories he had heard about Liu Jiu from Gu Ye come alive the moment he saw her in person.
Liu Jiu held Gu Xuanyu's hand, thinking that this uncle was not bad either.
The three entered the house, where Gu Ye's dishes were already cooked and smelled delicious. He had made seafood, which Bao Ni had brought over.
"Big brother, hurry up and wash your hands, it's time to eat." Gu Ye came out of the kitchen carrying plates, everything was ready.
"Okay, coming right away." Gu Ze felt relieved, but looking at Gu Ye like this, he felt like crying.
Gu Xuanyu placed the dishes he brought back on the dining table and took Liu Jiu to wash her hands.
A large table was set up, around which sat the Gu Ze family and the Gu Ye family.
"Welcome back home, Comrade Gu Ye, Comrade Lin Baoni, Gu Yunchu and Gu Xuanming."
"Is Gu Xuanming me?" Sanqi looked at his uncle with a puzzled expression. He was a little unfamiliar with the name.
"Yes, Gu Sanqi's full name is Gu Xuanming." Gu Ye told his son with certainty, "Your name is Gu Xuanming."
"It sounds pretty good!" Sanqi nodded, looking quite satisfied.
Gu Ze couldn't help but chuckle; this little guy was quite interesting.
Gu Ze didn't say anything else. Everyone was hungry, so let's eat.
Liu Jiu ate a large plate of dumplings, which filled her stomach, so she ate more slowly.
Sanqi was hungry, and he ate very seriously, displaying excellent dining etiquette.
Gu Ze looked at Liu Jiu and San Qi, who were eating with great relish, and then at his youngest son, who was eating as if swallowing medicine, unable to swallow a single bite for a long time.
"Brother, does your tooth hurt?" Sanqi ate for a while, and when she had food in her stomach, she slowed down and synchronized with Liujiu.
Gu Xuanyi didn't understand Sanqi's meaning and asked in confusion, "My teeth don't hurt?"
Sanqi found it strange, "Your teeth don't hurt, so why do you look so uncomfortable?" Eating is a happy thing, so why are you frowning?
"I'm not hungry, I don't want to eat." Gu Xuanyi had no appetite. He didn't want to eat, but he was afraid his father would criticize him.
"You just don't exercise enough, and you're not starving!" Liu Jiu picked up a piece of braised pork, which was well-made, just as delicious as her grandmother's.
Children in their late 60s and early 70s get hungry quickly because they get a lot of exercise.
"Hmm, Xuanyi, you should exercise more. Tomorrow, go for a run with Liujiu." Gu Ze looked at the chubby-cheeked Liujiu and Sanqi, then at his own frail second son, and felt a headache coming on.
"I... I can't run." Gu Xuanyi didn't like sports or going out to play. The kids in the compound laughed at him, saying he was like a little girl and wouldn't play with him.
"It's okay, I'll take you for a slow run tomorrow. You need to run more, otherwise, won't you lose a fight? If you win a fight, do you have to pay for it? I've lost all my White Rabbit candies, do you have any left?" Liu Jiu looked at the thin Gu Xuanyi and thought he couldn't fight.
"I don't know. I can't beat them. They always laugh at me. I don't like playing with them." Gu Xuanyi didn't know if he had to pay for his injuries in a fight, and he hadn't been in many fights.
"Were you bullied? Who bullied you? I'll help you get revenge tomorrow. I, Gu Yun Chu, am invincible on the entire island."
Sanqi swallowed the food in her mouth. "Sister, I still have White Rabbit milk candy, enough for one time."
Sanqi thought about his family's savings, enough for one time.
The Gu family, except for Gu's eldest sister-in-law, were all dumbfounded. What did the fight have to do with White Rabbit candy?
Gu Ye kindly explained to them, "Liu Jiu got into a fight at school and beat someone up. When Bao Ni was called in by the school, she had to compensate the other person with White Rabbit milk candy, since the other person was injured. Liu Jiu has been in school for half a year and has already given up all her candy. She also has to occasionally help Sanqi out."
"Wow, my sister is amazing!" Gu Xuanyi perked up, feeling like he had found a powerful backer.
"That's amazing!" Sanqi thought her older sister was the most amazing.
"Tomorrow we'll go out and play. Tell me who bullied you, and I'll fight back for you." Liu Jiu took another bite of the braised pork slices.
Gu Ze looked at Liu Jiu, then at Gu Ye, the meaning of which was self-evident: You were like this when you were a child.
Gu Ye didn't really have much of an impression. His strongest memories were of spending time with his mother, and he didn't remember much of what came before.
They ate and drank, and the meal lasted a long time; they not only ate but also chatted.
"Get some rest early tonight, the car ride was too tiring, let's talk tomorrow."
Sister-in-law Gu looked at Liu Jiu and San Qi, who were about to fall asleep, and ended the gossip with Bao Ni.
Bonnie helped the two children wash up and then went to bed.
Gu Ye and his elder brother were talking in the study. There were many things that were extremely inconvenient to discuss over the phone, which was also why Gu Ze was urging Gu Ye to come back.
"How is Gu Xiangdong? Did you manage to get him out of there unscathed?" Gu Ye's hatred for Gu Xiangdong was written all over his face, without any attempt to hide it.
