Chapter 21 Bonnie Raises Chickens and Grows Vegetables

Bonnie persisted in exercising with Gu Ye every morning, and her progress gradually became apparent, laying the groundwork for showcasing her true abilities in the future.

Gu Ye left for work, and Bao Ni rode her bike to pick up her grandmother.

"Grandma, are you ready?" Bonnie called out to her as soon as she entered the courtyard.

"Baoni's here. Have you eaten?" Sister-in-law Lin asked as Baoni entered.

"Sister-in-law, you're back! How is your mother-in-law?" Bao Ni asked as soon as she saw her sister-in-law.

A few days after their wedding, the eldest sister-in-law received a letter that her mother was ill and went back to visit her.

"It's nothing serious, I just tripped and twisted my ankle." Sister-in-law Lin was also helpless. What could possibly happen to her own mother? She just wanted her to support her family.

Sister-in-law Lin's family is from a town outside the island. When Brother Lin was working as a temporary worker in that town, he worked in a factory.

Brother Lin hadn't even considered this possibility. The other person had a town household registration and a formal job, while he was just a fisherman on the island and a temporary worker.

Back then, Brother Lin was just thinking about working hard so he could become a permanent employee.

Unexpectedly, his sure-fire promotion opportunity was taken by someone with connections. He was young and hot-blooded at the time, and he was indignant. He went to the leader to complain, but instead he was given a hard time.

Disheartened, Brother Lin quit his temporary job and decided to stay on the island from now on and never go out again.

Not long after Brother Lin returned to the island, his wife came to him one day and asked, "Will you marry me?" Brother Lin was stunned; he couldn't believe that this beautiful and generous girl from town would want to marry him.

"Why?" Brother Lin asked, because no girl from the town would want to marry into the island.

Sister-in-law Lin explained the whole story. Sister-in-law Lin's family lived in the town. Her father was an ordinary worker in the factory, and her mother was a housewife who did not work and occasionally took on odd jobs.

Sister-in-law Lin's parents favored sons over daughters; they had three daughters before finally having a son. In order to provide a better life for their son, her two older sisters married into families that offered financial gain.

Her younger brother is about to graduate from high school and can't find a job. Her parents want to marry him off to a widower with two children, so that the man can arrange a job for her brother.

Sister-in-law Lin didn't want to be sold off by her parents for profit like her sisters. She wanted to get rid of this family, so she negotiated with her parents. She could transfer her job to her younger brother, but she had to decide her own marriage.

Her parents agreed and allowed her to find a partner on her own, but they demanded that Sister-in-law Lin get married as soon as possible, as they would not keep anyone in the family who would freeload.

Sister-in-law Lin had no suitable suitors, and Brother Lin, whom she thought was quite good, had quit his job. After much deliberation, she decided to take a gamble and go find him; marrying into an island family was better than being exploited by her parents.

And so, two people who originally had no connection ended up forming a family and living a very happy life.

The year after Sister-in-law Lin married into the island, she gave birth and happened to be hired by the noodle factory on the island. She passed the exam and became a statistician at the noodle factory.

This is the story of my older brother and sister-in-law as I remember it; it's ordinary, but also heartwarming.

"Auntie, I miss you." Da Bao heard his aunt's voice and ran out of the house, not forgetting to say some sweet words.

“Dabao, your auntie misses you too. Come to your auntie’s house with your great-grandmother later. I’ve been feeling a bit lost without you these past few days.” Bao Ni hugged Dabao and spun him around twice.

This made Da Bao laugh non-stop, "Auntie, faster!"

"Alright, let Auntie rest for a while." Sister-in-law Lin interrupted Da Bao, telling him to get down.

"Xiao Lan, I'm going to help Bao Ni plant vegetables. Please cook lunch for me, I'll be back this afternoon." Grandma Lin instructed her granddaughter-in-law to cook lunch, then picked up her things and got into the back seat of Bao Ni's car.

"Me too!" Da Bao shouted anxiously when he saw his great-grandmother getting into the car.

“You sit in the front,” Bonnie said, picking up Da Bao and placing him on the front crossbar of the bicycle. “Sister-in-law, we’re off.”

Before he finished speaking, the bike had already gone quite a distance.

After registering at the gate, Bonnie led her grandmother and Da Bao slowly back, taking the opportunity to check out the family compound.

I had just arrived near my home when the three gossipy friends were standing there chatting again. They seem to have so many things to talk about.

"Commander Gu's family is back. Are these your relatives?" Deputy Battalion Commander Zhu's wife from the front yard asked casually when she saw Bao Ni and the others coming over.

"Yes, my grandma came to help me plant vegetables. I don't know how to do anything, so I have to keep going back to my parents' house!" Bonnie said matter-of-factly, "Just to spite you all, for letting you gossip about this and that all day long."

Bonnie has heard these past few days that Zhu Fuying's sister-in-law in the front yard often comes to her family to freeload, and the couple always argues about it, sometimes even getting physical!

"Auntie, let's go home," Da Bao chimed in.

The two, one big and one small, walked into the courtyard with their chests out and heads held high, their steps full of confidence.

Grandma Lin followed behind with a smile, thinking to herself, "This is still just a child."

The three gossiping friends were left bewildered in the wind. They hadn't said anything, so why did they feel like they were being subtly insulted?

Grandma felt comforted as she looked at their increasingly warm and inviting home, and Bonnie was also starting to adjust to living together as a couple.

"Grandma, look, I turned the soil pretty well, didn't I?" Bonnie grabbed a handful of soil; it was still very soft, and she had turned it over several times.

"Hmm, not bad. We can't plant too many things this season, so let's plant some spinach, cilantro, and rapeseed, they're frost-resistant." Grandma was an experienced old woman who knew what vegetables to plant in what season.
