Bonnie isn't interested in who goes to the worker-peasant-soldier university. Things seem fine now, but it'll be a bit awkward once the college entrance exam is reinstated.
But for many people today, the Workers-Peasants-Soldiers University is a lifeline. Otherwise, they wouldn't have resorted to such foolish and risky tactics, even at the cost of their most precious possessions.
"Sister Bonnie, the quartermaster said that the last batch of seaweed seedlings has been harvested and dried before they return to their unit."
Han Weidong rushed in and reported the matter to Yu Yin.
"Okay, I'll go with you to take a look."
Bonnie put away her notebook and left with Han Weidong.
Have you talked to your family about it? What are their opinions?
"My brother said that the quotas recommended on the island are selected based on local needs, and schools and majors are not suitable for me. He told me to wait, and he would try to get me a place if military academies or military industrial colleges were recruiting." Han Weidong understood what his older brother meant. For them, the universities recommended by the local government were like a chicken rib—tasteless to eat, but a pity to throw away.
As they were talking, the two arrived at the beach.
On the beach, there are wooden stakes every so often. Seaweed seedlings brought back from the sea are tied to the stakes with ropes at both ends, and the hanging seaweed sways in the wind like green ribbons.
"Quartermaster, thank you for your hard work!" Bonnie thanked the quartermaster. They had worked together happily for the past two years.
"Don't mention it, this is also part of our unit's work. We're all working for ourselves." The quartermaster led the assembled soldiers away, leaving the drying of the clothes to the island team and the military spouses from the family compound.
Bonnie led a team to check the drying of the seaweed. The neighbors couldn't be too close, or it would easily get tangled together in the wind.
Bonnie's dad was there too; he organized the team members to work and even kept track of their work points.
"Captain, where is the captain?" Bonnie and her father hadn't even exchanged a few words when they heard someone running over like a madman.
"What's wrong? What do you want?"
When Bonnie's father saw that they were educated youth, he felt disgusted. He had been annoyed by these educated youth lately; they were all like weeds growing on their heads, doing their work in a mess.
"I just want to ask, since I gave a gift, am I eligible for a spot at the Workers, Peasants and Soldiers University?"
"What gift? When did I accept your gift? You can't slander me like this, it's not just talk, otherwise I'll have to call the police." Bonnie's father was baffled. When did he accept her gift?
“The gift was accepted by Lin Yu’s wife. She said she could represent you. I gave her all my savings, and a watch, which was a keepsake left to me by my mother.” This female educated youth, whose voice was trembling with tears, was in the second batch to arrive on the island. Bao Ni didn’t know her name.
"When did you give the things to Lin Yu's wife? Did anyone else see it?" Bonnie felt that Song Xiaolan really didn't want to live a peaceful life anymore.
"At noon today, Wei, the educated youth who came last year, came with me." Although the female educated youth was anxious, she spoke clearly and logically.
“I gave it to her not long before someone else went to see her. I thought she was in charge and taking on all the responsibilities. Before I even got back to the youth center, I heard people talking about how the brigade leader’s eldest son had moved out and they didn’t know what had happened. I felt uneasy when I heard that, so I came to the brigade leader to confirm.”
Bonnie and her father exchanged a glance. "Dad, you take some people to Lin Yu's house. I'm going to the dock." Bonnie then ran towards the dock.
When she arrived at the dock, panting, a medium-sized fishing boat was preparing to set sail. She ran a few steps and jumped onto the deck.
"Hey, Lin Baoni, what are you doing? This is so dangerous, why are you in such a hurry?"
The captain was from the second team of the island crew; they were going to the city's dock to hand over their catch.
"Has Lin Yu's wife boarded the ship yet?"
"She just got on. She said her mother sent a message that her father is sick and she is anxious to go back to see him. She can't wait for the passenger ship tomorrow morning, so she asked me to give her a ride."
The captain was quite puzzled. Lin Yu's wife came with so many bags and packages; anyone who didn't know better would think she was moving house!
"Brother Zhang, please wait a few minutes. I need to take Song Xiaolan back. She cheated me out of money and is trying to run away. If I don't take her back, my dad will be ruined by her." Bonnie felt she hadn't been this angry in a long time.
Bonnie was very familiar with the structure of the fishing boat and quickly found Song Xiaolan.
"You're fucking heartless, no one would do something like this." Bonnie pulled Song Xiaolan out like a chick, and then gathered up and pulled out all the things she had brought. They had raided Lin Yu's hideout.
"Lin Baoni, let me go! What right do you have to stop me from leaving? I'm going back to see my father; he's sick." Song Xiaolan was terrified as soon as she saw Baoni, and only then did she start struggling.
"Really? Is he seriously ill? Is he going to die? You're going to kill my dad! I don't care if he's really sick or not, or if he's going to die. If you don't go back and explain things clearly today, I'll show you what it means to be in unbearable pain." Bonnie became angrier and angrier as she spoke. In this era, the punishment for officials who embezzle and accept bribes is very severe.
Bonnie was really anxious. Her father had sacrificed so much for the team members on the island all his life. Now that he was old, if Song Xiaolan succeeded in her scheme, he would not only be punished, but he would also feel incredibly resentful.
Enraged, Bonnie became reckless, pulling Song Xiaolan so hard she stumbled and slammed against the boat. She cried out in pain, unable to break free from Bonnie's grip.
"Brother Zhang, we've found the person. Could you get me a basket? These are stolen goods; I need to take them home. I'll have my dad treat you to drinks later. I'm going downstairs now; the house is in complete chaos."
Bonnie, carrying Song Xiaolan and holding a basket, easily jumped off the boat and landed.
