Gradually, Bonnie adapted to life in the family compound, but she wasn't completely used to it yet; it was too leisurely.
The only thing that made Bonnie happy recently was receiving a letter from her second brother. He had been successfully selected for the guard company of the Kyoto military and had started training, so they couldn't communicate for the time being.
"Hey, Bonnie!"
Lin Baoni felt a shiver run through her body and got goosebumps all over.
“Speak properly, why are you acting so strangely? It’s creepy,” Bonnie said, slapping Gu Ye with her hand.
He lacks tenderness, yet he tries to act like a romantic prince; it's terrifying, especially after the two have had a deep conversation.
"We're getting married now, and Xiao Chaoyang is such a jerk, he kept nagging us to treat everyone. I really couldn't refuse, so I had to agree." Gu Ye's voice became less and less confident as he spoke, and by the end it was almost inaudible.
"What did you say? Inviting me to dinner, at home?" Bonnie sat up excitedly, then immediately lay back down, still not dressed!
"You know I can't cook. Do you have a grudge against them? Why are you inviting them over to eat my cooking?" Bonnie couldn't believe it; this person had lost their mind.
"Didn't Xiao Chaoyang and his gang take us there? They insisted that the mackerel dumplings you made were a rare delicacy, so delicious that they made our mouths water even in our dreams."
Seeing Gu Ye's helpless expression, Bao Ni was also at a loss for words. The dumplings that her grandmother made that day were so delicious that she was almost drooling.
"What can we do? We can't just eat one mackerel dumpling. What about the other dishes?" Bonnie lay on the bed, feeling utterly hopeless, not wanting to move at all.
Gu Ye also knew that this matter would not be easy. He had tasted the dishes that Bao Ni cooked, and the taste was truly indescribable.
"How about we trouble Grandma again to make some dumplings and a few simple dishes? Otherwise, these guys will keep nagging me!" Gu Ye clasped his hands together and asked Bonnie for help.
Bonnie also knew the military custom that newlyweds or those who had recently joined the military were required to host a banquet, as it was a long-standing tradition.
"Alright, tough guys aren't suited to acting cute. I'll go home tomorrow and talk to Grandma about which day we should eat."
"Let's have dinner the night after tomorrow, then rest the next day. I'll have time to clean up, so you won't be too tired." Gu Ye had everything planned out, making all the arrangements perfectly clear.
"At least you have a conscience, huh!" Bonnie was sleepy and wanted to go to bed.
Gu Ye held Bao Ni in his arms and let her rest her head on his arm. It felt especially reassuring to sleep like this.
She went for her morning exercise as usual, and using her strength, Bonnie threw Gu Ye away for the first time, letting out a long sigh of relief.
Gu Ye was stunned by the fall. How could this be? He was one of the top players in the entire army. He never expected that his Bao Ni was so amazing!
Lin Baoni was delighted and looked at Gu Ye with a beaming smile, like a sunflower.
After having breakfast in the cafeteria, Gu Ye went to work, while Bao Ni fed the chickens and then rode her bicycle to find her grandmother.
"Baoni, you're back again. It's like you're not even married. You're always running back to your parents' house every other day. Doesn't your husband get angry?" Aunt Huang, the neighbor, teased Baoni.
"Auntie, my husband isn't angry. He's just worried that I'm not used to being married yet, so he wants me to come home more often so I won't miss home." Bao Ni knew that Aunt Huang meant no harm, so she just made a few casual remarks.
"Baoni is lucky, she met a good man!" Aunt Huang said enviously before silently entering the courtyard.
Bao Ni thought of Aunt Huang's experience. When she was young, she was separated from her family and was brought back by Uncle Huang's mother. Later, she lived with Uncle Huang.
She has no family to rely on, her mothers-in-law are all difficult people, and her husband doesn't care about her. She's always suffering.
"Did you meet Aunt Huang?" Grandma asked as soon as Bonnie entered the courtyard.
"Yes, she spoke to me for a few words, and seemed to be in a bad mood."
Grandma sighed, "Your Aunt Huang has had a tough time. She's so old, and she's still being bullied by her mother-in-law. Her husband doesn't help her, and her children don't side with her either."
Bonnie felt that Aunt Huang should have been tougher from the start. She was willing to fight to the death and show some ruthlessness. After all, she was all alone, so what was there to be afraid of?
She was able to be controlled by her mother-in-law for a lifetime, and the children were taught not to respect their own mothers. They listened to their grandmothers in everything, and Aunt Huang became like a baby-making machine and a servant in the family.
If she can't figure it out herself, no one can help her.
Bonnie told Grandma about the dinner party tomorrow, and she still needs Grandma's help.
"Okay, come pick me up after lunch tomorrow." Grandma calculated the time; she could start preparing after lunch.
"I'm going to get up early tomorrow to queue up and buy some meat. Today is the third day of the Lunar New Year. I'll go back later and go beachcombing to get lots of seafood. Then I'll have everything I need."
The time for beachcombing here is also divided into periods. Generally, the harvest is most plentiful between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. from the first to the seventh day of the lunar calendar.
The best time to visit is from the 8th to the 14th of the lunar calendar, around 4 AM to noon.
The best time to visit is between 9 AM and 8 PM, from the 15th to the 24th of the lunar calendar.
Finally, from the 25th to the 30th of the lunar calendar, it becomes 4 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This was summarized by experienced fishermen, and gradually it became a pattern.
It's already past eight o'clock, and Bonnie didn't linger at her parents' house any longer. She rode her bicycle home to head to the beach.
The women in the family compound had already gone to the beach in twos and threes, and Bonnie quickly went inside to change her clothes, grab her tools, and set off.
There will be a lot of people tomorrow, so we need to catch more. Bonnie carried a bucket and a basket, along with a shovel and a broken machete, ready to pry open the oysters.
On the beach, adults and children were busy finding their own spots, and exclamations of surprise could be heard from time to time.
Bonnie carried her things and didn't approach them. She wasn't familiar with them, so she figured it was more efficient to act alone—a habit she'd developed over the years.
