"Bonnie, did you hear the gossip in the family compound?"
"Sister Qu, what gossip? Is it about me?" Bao Ni looked confused. She hadn't been around the family compound much lately.
Su Mo could tell at a glance that Bao Ni didn't know about this. "You should tell her quickly, this gossip can't be allowed to spread any further."
"Okay, I..."
"Baoni, let me tell you, I don't know which scoundrel is spreading rumors, their gossip is outrageous!" Aunt Zhang came running in, still shouting angrily.
"Sister Zhang, we're here to talk to Bao Ni about this too. These past few days, I've felt like people in the family compound are avoiding me. They think I said something wrong again and offended someone." Qu Hong also looked helpless; she always offends people without realizing it.
"I overheard it by chance. I saw several people chattering there, so I quietly went over and heard them gossiping about Bao Ni! After listening for a while, one of the military wives saw it was me, and they all dispersed." Zhang's wife felt something was wrong, so she quickly went to find Bao Ni.
"What are they saying about me? I've only been here a few days, am I already so famous?" Bonnie didn't know what she had done that made them gossip about her.
"Oh dear, let me tell you. They said you used any means necessary to marry Commander Gu, that you're barely literate, just a fisherwoman, unworthy of Commander Gu, and that Commander Gu was lusting after you and was willing to break off the engagement to be with you..."
Qu Hong gave a brief account of what she had heard.
"That's about it. I heard pretty much everything." Aunt Zhang felt that Qu Hong's account was quite comprehensive and didn't miss anything.
“Yes, that’s the main point,” Su Mo echoed.
"Thank you, sisters-in-law. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known about this. I've only been here a few days and haven't met many people yet. How did they manage to avoid telling me all this?" Bonnie felt that these gossipy aunts were wasting their talents here and should be sent to gather intelligence.
"I think someone orchestrated this. Otherwise, how would they know that the three of us have a good relationship with you, and why would they avoid talking about these things with us, and why would it spread to everyone in such a short time?"
“Your sister-in-law Su is right, they did it on purpose.” Qu Hong hated people like that, who blindly agreed with others without knowing whether they were telling the truth, and some even added fuel to the fire.
“I know this matter cannot be left unresolved, not only for me, but also for my husband Gu Ye. He has gone through life and death to get to where he is today, and I cannot let a bunch of shady characters smear him. I must find the source of this matter, go to the military, and get an explanation.”
Bonnie knew that if this matter was allowed to spread, she wouldn't care, but Gu Ye would be affected. Moreover, judging from the tone, even the neighbors had heard about it.
"Sisters, we need your help. You don't need to be the first to take the lead in this matter. We don't know who is behind this, so please don't let it affect the men in your families."
"That's not quite right."
"Better safe than sorry!" Bonnie asked her three sisters-in-law to go and see who else was spreading these false rumors.
"I'll catch them red-handed, and then trace it back to the source step by step. We have to find the root of the problem." Bonnie had figured out the plan, and the group prepared to take action.
Most of those who gossip are unemployed military wives; they just have nothing better to do than chatter and gossip in the family compound.
"Bonnie, a few of us are talking over there. I asked a close friend of mine to listen in, and they're talking right now."
Su Mo asked her neighbor, her sister-in-law, who had recently joined the army, to take her around and find a group of people gossiping.
"Alright, I'll go take a look. You don't need to come with me."
Bonnie followed the route and deliberately wore a hat—not a straw hat, but a sun hat that Aunt Gu had sent her, which she hadn't worn much. She also wore a dress, so most people wouldn't recognize her as Bonnie.
Even after walking into the crowd, no one recognized Lin Baoni. Their preconceived notion was that Baoni wore a large straw hat, baggy floral clothes, and liberation shoes.
At this moment, Bonnie was not only wearing a dress and a sun hat, but also a pair of leather sandals. This outfit was completely unrelated to Lin Bonnie.
"I heard she's uncultured and morally corrupt. I don't know what Commander Gu saw in her, that he abandoned his ex-boyfriend, who I heard almost died. Tsk tsk..." Bonnie almost laughed in anger after listening for a while.
"You're wasting your lives if you weren't screenwriters. Tell me, where did you hear these things, or did you make them up yourself? What's your purpose? Are you trying to ruin a seasoned, life-or-death officer in the military? Are you spies?"
Bonnie's accusation was so blatant that the faces of several of her sisters-in-law turned pale. This wasn't just idle talk; spies, after all, could ruin generations.
"Who are you? What we say has nothing to do with you. Don't make false accusations. We just heard it from others. What does it have to do with spies?"
Bonnie laughed; she didn't know who she was, but she was talking enthusiastically.
"I am Lin Baoni, whom you all talk about. I am Lin Baoni, who is morally corrupt, illiterate, and a heartbreaker!"
As soon as Bao Ni finished speaking, the other women looked at each other in bewilderment. They had never actually met Lin Bao Ni; they had only heard about her from others and had simply echoed their opinions.
"Well, I have something to do at home, so I'll be going now." The one who shouted the loudest tried to slip away, but Bonnie grabbed him. "If you want to leave without explaining yourself, then you are the mastermind behind this, trying to destroy the soldiers of the unit. You are an enemy agent."
"No, I heard it from someone else." The woman, who was not very old, in her thirties, panicked and waved her hands to prove that she was not a spy and that she was not the one who told the story first.
"Don't even think about getting away. Explain yourself right here, or I'll report you to the military, and then things will get complicated." Bonnie took out a pen and notebook from her small bag to take notes.
