The temperature in Guangdong in December is still quite high, with flowers blooming and willows turning green, so you can wear just a light layer of clothing.
In December, the island is covered in a blanket of white snow, with hardly any greenery to be seen.
"It's getting cold again, pour me a cup of hot water." Bonnie's dad came in carrying a big package, shivering from the cold.
"What are you carrying? Why aren't you wearing gloves?" Bao Ni's mother handed a cup of brown sugar ginger water to her husband.
“Bonnie sent it, I don’t know what it is, it arrived today, so I brought it back.”
Bonnie's dad took a sip of water. "You even added sugar?"
"Drink up, it's so cold, have some ginger and sugar water to sweat it out."
Bonnie's dad didn't say anything, but a barely perceptible smile appeared on his face. It has to be his wife!
A young couple growing old together—that's the greatest happiness in life!
"This child, she's only been gone a few months and she's already sending so much stuff home. Isn't that enough?" Bao Ni's mother muttered to herself, her hands still busy with her work, her smile widening.
Tomorrow, the whole team will envy her for raising such a wonderful daughter. Let them be jealous. Back then, so many people said that the Lin family doted on their daughter, but after she got married, she belonged to someone else, and all that was for nothing.
The package was opened; there were several bags of different sizes, each with a note attached.
“Dad, look at what’s written on this piece of paper our girl has stuck on? I don’t recognize it either, it looks like a name.” Bao Ni’s mother had never been to school and hadn’t learned many words when she was learning to read.
"Let me see." Bonnie's dad drank a cup of brown sugar ginger water and felt better.
"Uncle Chen, Uncle, Sister-in-law Ya Ru, Hai Yan..."
Bonnie's father looked at the names on the list; these were Bonnie's New Year's gifts for each family.
Bonnie's dad found the letter in the package, opened it, and Bonnie described her life there. She mainly mentioned that Guangdong has a spring-like climate all year round, with no shortage of vegetables and fruits. What she sent back were dried fruits and preserves she had traded with others, as well as some dried deep-sea fish.
The packages with names written on them were New Year's gifts for each family. Master Chen's gift was delivered by her uncle, while her mother delivered the others. There wasn't much stuff; it was just something to try.
Inside the envelope were four ten-yuan bills, which were pocket money for Grandpa, Grandma, and Mom and Dad. It's almost Chinese New Year, so they can buy whatever they want...
As her husband read the letter, tears streamed down Bao Ni's mother's face.
“They all say we spoil our daughter and protect Bao Ni, but they don’t see how filial Bao Ni is to us. Every year during the Spring Festival, Bao Ni makes clothes for her grandparents and parents. This year she couldn’t come back, so she just gave them money.”
"We have three sons, and none of them ever think to give their parents pocket money. They're always either looking after the kids or doing this or that. None of them are as considerate as Bao Ni." Bao Ni's mother said between sobs. She missed her daughter, missed Sanqi, and wondered if she was adjusting well to school.
"Baoni wrote a letter?" Grandpa Lin came in from outside and saw his eldest son and his wife reading the letter, with his eldest daughter-in-law's eyes filled with tears.
"Dad, Bonnie sent some things back. She also sent a 10,000-yuan note to each of us, telling us to buy whatever we want."
Bonnie's dad took out four ten-yuan bills to show his father, and he was also very excited.
“Our Nizi is so good. I’m leaving the island tomorrow, so I’ll go buy two bottles of good wine. I also have the wine coupons that Bao Ni left me when she left.” The old man took a ten-yuan note and put it in his pocket.
"Grandma Bonnie, we're leaving the island tomorrow. We need to spend the money Bonnie gave us ourselves; we shouldn't let the child's good intentions go to waste."
"You two should also go buy new clothes and wear them. This is a gift from your daughter, to show them that our Baoni is doing well. Don't think about saving them up. The children are married now, so don't worry about them too much. Let them move on on their own."
The old man went inside to find Bonnie's great-grandmother to get some money to buy sponge cakes tomorrow. Since Bonnie left, her great-grandmother hasn't eaten much sponge cake; she's too precious to part with it.
“We’ll leave the island together tomorrow. Do as your father says. What our daughter gives us, we should spend on ourselves.” Bonnie’s father understood what the old man meant.
"Okay, let's go together and buy some cloth for Mom so she can make new clothes."
The four elders of the Lin family made the decision happily, while the three sons of the Lin family felt their ears burning, wondering who was talking about them.
The packages from Beijing arrived a little late; the ones for Sister-in-law Gu and Han Weidong's group were separate.
"Mom, did my aunt send a package?"
Gu Xuanyu was unusually excited. He had heard that his mother had just brought a large package home, and he guessed that it was sent by his aunt.
Liu Jiu wrote to me before, saying that Guangdong was very hot, had lots of fruit, and big fishing boats... which made him want to go to Guangdong again. He misses his aunt and the others.
"It's there, I haven't had a chance to open it yet. I wonder how Sanqi's leg is doing, the things I sent shouldn't have arrived yet. Oh dear, Sanqi is suffering, it's such an undeserved disaster."
Bonnie didn't tell her mother about Sanqi's leg injury, as she was worried about it and habitually only shared good news.
However, since Gu Ye had told his elder brother about Commander Wang's matter, it was inevitable that the news of Sanqi's injury would spread. Gu's elder brother was very angry. His Sanqi was such a delicate child, and she had suffered so much.
Sister-in-law Gu liked the combination of 37 and 69, and was heartbroken. She specially went to a famous traditional Chinese medicine doctor, explained the situation, and got Chinese medicine and plasters prescribed to prevent any aftereffects.
Gu Xuanyu and Gu Xuanyi looked at the things their aunt had sent. There were so many packages, and they had no idea what they contained.
"Brother, this is dried fruit, sweet and sour. And there's candied fruit, sweet too. What's this? What a huge fish..."
Gu Xuanyi unpacked the dried fruit and stuffed it into his mouth. He didn't recognize many of the dried fruits, but he knew that his aunt sent good things, so he ate them without hesitation.
