When Bonnie arrived home, Gu Ye had already started cooking.
"Honey, you're back. How was your first day at work?" Gu Ye cooked rice, braised fish, stir-fried bok choy, braised prawns, and spicy stir-fried crab for dinner.
"It's alright. I was a little nervous for the first few minutes of the first class, but I got used to it in the afternoon and it felt pretty good. Working two days a week and having free time the rest of the time is perfect for me."
Bonnie really likes this job, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, she can do it for a few years, until after the reform and opening up. At that time, we'll see where Gu Ye is; the family won't be separated.
"Mom, Mom, I'm hungry, can I eat now?"
Liu Jiu rushed in, covered in sweat and carrying a basket of wild fruit. San Qi followed behind, looking dejected, his face streaked with black and white, looking rather disheveled.
"Where did you all come from?"
"Mom, we went to learn about farming this afternoon. We helped the farmers weed, and I was the fastest. After we finished, I also helped Sanqi. He wasn't wearing a straw hat, and he was sweating. His handkerchief was in his schoolbag, so he wiped it with his hands, which made him all dusty." Liu Jiu put down his schoolbag, picked up a basin of water, and went to take a bath.
Sanqi was tired, so he sat there waiting for his sister to finish washing before he went.
Bonnie didn't say much. These days, learning from industry, agriculture, and the military is the mainstream, and all students have to participate. There's also the "bitter-sweet meal," which Bonnie absolutely can't stand; the taste is truly indescribable.
After the two children finished their baths, the food was already on the table. Seeing the sumptuous meal, even Sanqi felt that most of her previous fatigue had disappeared.
"Gu Ye, do you know where I can find a large, airtight water bag or an old tin oil drum?" Bonnie thought about how difficult it was to take a bath and missed showering.
At this time, apart from some special departments or high-class guesthouses, there were very few showers.
Remembering the period dramas I watched when I was Jiang Jiaojiao, and the solar-powered hot water bottles that were popular in rural areas, I suddenly had an idea. The weather here is so hot that showering and eating are practically happening at the same time.
"What are they for?" Gu Ye didn't know what Bao Ni wanted those things for.
"Make a simple shower room, otherwise it's too inconvenient to take a shower every day."
After hearing what Bao Ni said, Gu Ye understood how to use it.
"Let me look for it. It's hard to say for sure right now. Forget about the oil drums; they're in high demand and unlikely to be found." Gu Ye kept this in mind.
Before going to bed, the family of four wiped it down again briefly, otherwise it would feel sticky and uncomfortable.
"It's so hot, I'm going to sweat again soon." Bonnie pushed Gu Ye away from behind her. It's true, with the heat, couples are spending less time together.
"I'll wipe it for you in a bit. I'll be busy again in a few days, and I won't have time to do it even if you want me to." Gu Ye was unwilling to give up this opportunity. It was rare for him to get off work early today, and he didn't have any training tasks.
Bonnie reluctantly agreed, but added, "Be careful not to leave any marks. You have to wear your swimsuit to class tomorrow, and I don't want to tell the kids that I got bitten by mosquitoes. It's too embarrassing."
Gu Ye, annoyed that Bao Ni talked too much, simply shut her down. Honestly, how could he not have that much? He's not stupid.
The bed legs creaked for quite a while, and Bonnie eventually lost track of whether Gu Ye had given her a bath or not. That scoundrel of a man, he never stopped nagging. She finally fell asleep from exhaustion.
When I woke up the next day, I felt quite refreshed, so I forgave him this time.
After breakfast, Bonnie, along with Liu Jiu, San Qi, and Zhang Saozi and her two children, prepared to take a car to the Children's Palace.
Aunt Zhang thought that she should also buy a bicycle for her family. It would be more convenient to go out, especially when she and Bao Ni went to the mountains. It would be embarrassing to always borrow one.
"Liu Jiu, where are you going?"
Cao Shengnan just came out and wanted to find Liu Jiu to play with.
"I'm going to the Children's Palace to learn scuba diving today. My mom is a scuba diving instructor!" Liu Jiu answered proudly and loudly.
"Oh, then let's play when you get back."
After Bonnie and her friends left, Cao Shengnan went home.
"Didn't you go to play with Liu Jiu? Why are you back?" Cao Wenze was quite puzzled. His daughter had gone out excitedly, but came back looking rather downcast.
"Liu went to the Children's Palace to learn scuba diving; he just left."
Cao Wenze was surprised that Gu Ye's children went to the Children's Palace. In the past, some children in Shanghai also went to the Children's Palace, but it was a bit far away. He and Yingzi were busy with work and their rest time was not fixed, so none of their children went.
"Do you want to go?" Cao Wenze asked his daughter.
"I'd like to go, but I don't know how to scuba dive."
"Okay, when your mother comes back tonight, we'll discuss it and then consult Aunt Gu."
Cao Shengnan smiled. Cao Wenze felt a little sorry for this silly child who always acted like an adult, helping her parents take care of her younger brothers.
Leaving aside the outcome of the Cao family's discussion, the idle people in the family compound were in an uproar when they learned that Commander Gu's wife had a job.
—How come Commander Gu's wife has a job? I've been here for so long and I still don't have a job. This is so unfair.
—Yes, it should be first come, first served. It can't be that whoever has a higher position gets priority for work.
—My family has many children and a heavy burden. We're just waiting for a job so we can have a better life. But no, we can't let this go. We need to find someone to help us with our work.
...
When it comes to personal interests, if one person takes the lead, others will follow. With so many people, and the odds stack up, if someone manages to get a job, wouldn't that be a win? And with so many people around, there's no chance of criticism.
Driven by the belief that "the law will not punish everyone," more and more people are going to work in the back office.
"What's the matter with all of you?"
