Chapter 281 A Life for a Life

Cao Wenze is a military doctor, and a doctor who is proficient in both traditional Chinese and Western medicine. He also participated in this mission, receiving leaders from Beijing and taking responsibility for their health.

When Cao Wenze entered, the several leaders in the room were all surprised. Not only Commander Yang, but Cao Wenze looked remarkably like Commander Yang. This was also Cao Wenze's biggest complaint: why didn't he look like his mother, and why did his sister look so much like him?

"Commendations, I am Cao Wenze, a military doctor. Now, I will examine you all." Cao Wenze gave a standard military salute, his facial expression unchanged.

They were all people who had come through the flames of war, and they quickly managed to control their expressions.

Cao Wenze sat behind the table, assisted by two other doctors who had come in with him. The leaders were not injured; they had simply been at sea for several days and were being monitored for potential health issues, just in case.

All of them regularly undergo physical examinations and are well aware of their health conditions. They traveled thousands of miles from Kyoto, and upon arrival, they immediately began their check-up work, leaving them somewhat exhausted.

Fortunately, there are no more scheduled activities, so I can rest here for a few days and then return directly to Beijing.

Cao Wenze first listened to the leader's heart and lungs with a stethoscope, finding nothing wrong. I then asked the leader to extend his hand, and he began to take his pulse, which falls under the category of traditional Chinese medicine.

"Sir, you are in good health, but you have some old injuries that need to be treated. Also, your meridians are blocked, so it would be best to have acupuncture for a few days to clear them and relieve some of the pain."

"Young doctor, are you combining traditional Chinese medicine with traditional Chinese medicine?" The leader was in his sixties and had survived countless fires and corpses.

"I majored in Western medicine, and I learned traditional Chinese medicine from my master." Cao Wenze didn't hide anything. This was all recorded in his file. His master was not affected and continued to make house calls.

"You're really capable. If possible, I'd appreciate it if you could help me out these next few days. I haven't been feeling well."

Cao Wenze finished examining the physical examinations of the leaders and found no major problems. Most of them had old injuries, and blocked meridians were a common phenomenon.

Cao Wenze packed his things, saluted, and prepared to leave.

"Yang Wenze, wait a minute, let's talk alone."

"Excuse me, sir, my name is Cao Wenze. There's no need for us to talk. After all, the dead cannot be brought back to life. Can you make them pay with their lives?" Cao Wenze said calmly and then left.

"Old Yang, what's going on? This is your eldest son, right? It's been twenty years since we last met, hasn't it?" The speaker was an old acquaintance who knew everything about his family.

"Yes, he was eighteen when he left. He dropped out of school and transferred his household registration. He left without looking back and then there was no news of him. I looked for him several times, but I didn't find any information. I didn't expect that he changed his surname. His mother's surname is Cao."

Commander Yang's tone was filled with regret and helplessness; there were too many irreconcilable conflicts between him and his son.

“I don’t know what happened back then. By the time I came back, Wenze had been gone for more than a month. I can tell if there’s some misunderstanding between you and your son that you can’t clear up. The child is holding a grudge.”

Commander Yang shook his head. There were some things he couldn't tell outsiders.

"I'm not feeling well, I'll go back and lie down for a while. We'll be staying here for a few more days, let me think about what to do."

Looking at their old buddy who had lost his spirit, the group couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.

Many families abandoned their wives in the past, and each has its own story, but the Yang family's tragedy was truly devastating. A disabled daughter was gone just like that, and then their outstanding eldest son also disappeared.

Back in his room, Commander Yang summoned his bodyguard and ordered him to investigate Dr. Cao Wenze's situation in as much detail as possible. He needed to find out if Dr. Cao was married and had children.

The guard left, and Commander Yang thought of eighteen-year-old Yang Wenze, holding his daughter's cold body, his eyes growing even colder. Later, he desperately wanted his two sons to pay with their lives, his attitude suggesting he wanted to destroy everything. He was terrified, and in the end, he protected the younger one but lost the older one.

Unexpectedly, he became a military doctor and is almost forty years old. I don't even know if he's married or not.

That evening, the guard brought over the results of the investigation.

"Sir, Dr. Cao graduated from Shanghai Military Medical University. He is married, and his wife is also a soldier. They have three children: a ten-year-old daughter and a pair of five-year-old twin sons. They all live in the family compound."

His wife, Deng Yingzi, is currently a staff officer in the fleet; she was transferred here this March. Her father is Commander Deng of the Shanghai Military Region, and she is a graduate of a regular military academy.

Commander Yang's mood was fluctuating; they were two very outstanding individuals.

However, she will no longer acknowledge him as her father.

That night, Commander Yang didn't sleep well at all, constantly thinking about what had happened before.

The next day, Commander Yang, accompanied by his bodyguards, went to the military family compound to talk to Wen Ze.

Dr. Cao is indeed home today; he has completed his mission and can go home.

When I first entered my yard, I was shocked. I hadn't been back for more than half a month, and the vegetable garden in the yard was lush and green. The previously sparse vegetable garden was now full of plants. The eggplants, tomatoes, and cucumbers were all quite tall, probably planted seedlings.

Cao Wenze has lived in the countryside for several years and is quite skilled at growing vegetables. He's just been too busy before to find the time. This time, he really wants to thank his sister-in-law. Looking at the lush green vegetables, he'll stir-fry some tonight—so fresh!

After changing clothes inside, I noticed the house was very clean; his daughter is so capable.

Just as he was about to wash the dirty clothes he had brought back, he saw Commander Yang walking over, and his brows furrowed involuntarily. He didn't think there was anything to talk about between them; it was a deadlock.

“There’s nothing to talk about between us. We’ve said everything that needed to be said.” Cao Wenze stood at the door, not wanting him to come in.

"Let's go inside and talk. There are people coming and going." Commander Yang has already come looking for us; how could we give up so easily?

He came from the countryside and went through life and death experiences to achieve everything he has now.

Yes, he abandoned his wife who had shared his hardships, but he wasn't the only one who did it back then. So many people did it, so why was he the only one whose family became enemies? Didn't everyone else's family prosper because of harmony?

His later wife was educated and beautiful; any man would be attracted to her. He only made a mistake that all men make, so how did he become an irredeemable villain?

The family has three children. The youngest daughter is only sixteen and will be married off soon. But the two sons are not very capable and cannot handle the resources she has. If she retires, the Yang family will be forgotten as soon as she leaves.

Although the eldest son is a military doctor, his wife is already a staff officer, and they have three children. Their future is bright. The Yang family will continue to stand near power generation after generation, rather than be submerged in the tides of history.

Cao Wenze looked at the person whose gaze kept changing; he felt both familiar and unfamiliar with them.

He harbored deep resentment towards this person, a resentment he would never forgive. No matter what he wanted to say, he would not compromise. His kind and optimistic sister was gone; that was an irreversible fact.

The two people standing inside and outside the door were locked in a stalemate, neither willing to compromise.
