Chapter 289 The Final Madness

Gu Ze returned home exhausted. Lately, the leader had been unwell, and some people were getting restless, constantly making small moves.

"Have you eaten?" Sister-in-law Gu was waiting in the living room; it was already past ten o'clock.

"I've already eaten. Why aren't you asleep? Don't wait for me. This period won't be easy either." Gu Ze pressed his temples; his head was a little sore.

“My work isn’t busy, and Xuanyu and Xuanyi help me at home. I can’t sleep well if you don’t come back.” After saying that, Sister-in-law Gu went to the kitchen and brought back a basin of hot water a while later.

"Come and soak your feet. I got some Chinese medicine for foot soaks; it can relieve fatigue." Sister-in-law Gu placed the basin in front of the sofa, gesturing for Gu Ze to come over.

Gu Ze felt a warmth in his heart. They could be considered childhood sweethearts, growing up together. Although they didn't have a passionate love, after so many years, they couldn't quite define what their feelings were anymore.

Actually, none of that matters anymore. As long as there is love in your heart, why worry about so many other things? Those who once loved each other to the point of life, after being worn down by life, end up with nothing but a mess.

Gu Ze comfortably soaked his feet, watching his wife knitting a sweater.

"Has Bonnie written to me recently? She's been busy lately, and there have been some special circumstances, so she hasn't called Gu Ye for a while. Write to Bonnie tomorrow and tell them to keep a low profile and try not to attract attention." Gu Ze knew that Gu Ye and his group weren't troublemakers, but the situation was tense lately, so it was better to be safe than sorry.

“Okay, I understand. A while ago, Bonnie sent over a lot of dried fruit, candied fruit, and dried vegetables. There wasn’t much in the letter, just some everyday stuff. She doesn’t know many people in the family compound.”

Now there are many people in this residential compound, and many with their own agendas, unlike before when we lived on the island, where there was a sense of purpose. Now, besides working two days a week, it's all about going up the mountain and down to the sea.

Sister-in-law Gu understood Bao Ni; she was a straightforward person who disliked beating around the bush and didn't have many hidden agendas. Naturally, she also disliked people who were troublesome.

"It's not the right time yet. We'll transfer Gu Ye back when the time is right. After all, Beijing is our base of operations. Besides, Gu Ye is good at army operations, so he doesn't have a clear advantage in the navy." Although Gu Ze holds a military rank, his work is not very related to the military.

"It would be best if she could come back. Bonnie and I would have company, and the children would grow closer together." Aunt Gu longed for Bonnie's return. She didn't like the other members of the Gu family, but sometimes she had to socialize with them.

Sometimes, I wish I could just kick them out, like I did with Bao Ni.

After soaking his feet, Gu Ze went to his study to work for a while. He felt that his hair had turned quite a bit whiter and he was exhausted!

Just as 1976 began, shocking news arrived: our most beloved premier had left them forever.

Bonnie had also studied this period of history and read about the scene of the procession along the ten-mile-long street to see off the Premier in the book. However, at that time, she was too far removed from this history to truly empathize with it.

But now, the surrounding cries and wails involuntarily remind people of the Premier's deeds.

Studying for the rise of China, the Long March, international negotiations... there are so many things. Premier Zhou's more than 50 years of revolutionary career, his dedication to the country and the people, his selflessness, could not be fully described even if one wrote for three days and three nights.

Bonnie witnessed firsthand the grief of the elderly women in the family compound who often jumped up and down cursing, the middle-aged women who could barely read, and the teenagers.

The elderly people lived through war-torn years, experiencing separation and death, and living a nomadic life. Their current stable life is the result of their hard work and struggle, built by leaders, the People's Liberation Army, and the people.

They were participants and witnesses, so when they learned of this tragic news, they were overcome with grief and cried uncontrollably.

Bonnie and her friends didn't have the chance to witness the touching scene of the ten-mile-long street bidding farewell to the Premier, but they did participate in the memorial ceremonies spontaneously organized by various companies.

Bonnie knew this was just the beginning; so much was to happen throughout 1976, including a major earthquake. Bonnie couldn't remember the exact dates.

She didn't know how previous time travelers managed to change history; she was truly powerless to do anything about it.

How can she be alerted by a major event that hasn't even happened yet, especially since it's so far away?

In the darkness before dawn, she didn't know how others had done it, and Bonnie felt incapable of doing it herself.

She couldn't remember the exact time either, and really had no idea where to start.

Because she had something on her mind, and couldn't tell anyone, not even Gu Ye, she had no intention of revealing this secret. It was her secret alone, a secret she would take to her grave.

As March arrived, Bonnie could sense the situation becoming increasingly tense. More and more people were wearing red armbands on the streets, and their shouts grew louder.

Bonnie knew their arrogance wouldn't last long, and they probably knew it too. The underlings might not know, but the higher-ups definitely knew something. Some went crazy, while others, seeing the situation was turning against them, began to keep a low profile, hoping for a better ending.

Although Bonnie was anxious, she still had to do what she was supposed to do.

Big and small things kept happening, and Bonnie became numb to it all. The main problem was that people were too far away to help.

When news of the Tangshan earthquake arrived and Gu Ye and his special operations brigade were going to provide rescue, Bao Ni thought to herself, "Oh, it happened in July!"
