Two weeks before the Lunar New Year, Bonnie received a phone call from her father with good news.
"Ni, your uncle's second son got into a junior college, your third uncle's third son also got in, Lin Bo got into military academy, and Wenli got into medical school..."
Bonnie was surprised by the outstanding results achieved by the Lin family this time, with not only close relatives but also many distant relatives passing the exam.
Although they are not top-tier universities, and most of them are junior colleges or vocational schools, for fishermen who make a living at sea, this is a life-changing opportunity.
"Dad, are you happy?" Bonnie asked her father with a grin.
"Happy? Of course I'm happy! I could laugh in my dreams. My daughter missed out, otherwise she'd be a college student too."
Bonnie's dad was a little disappointed, as his daughter was a very good student.
Bonnie silently apologized to herself. She truly didn't want to struggle anymore; she just wanted a simple and happy life. What she couldn't achieve in her past life, she had in this one: a husband, children, and no more striving.
"Dad, there's nothing to regret. I'm living the life I want now, and nothing else matters. How are Grandpa and Grandma? How's Mom?"
"Everything's fine, everything's fine, I just miss you." Bonnie's dad didn't say much else, as phone calls are quite expensive.
Bonnie hung up the phone, feeling a pang of sadness. She had been away from the island for quite some time, and she missed home.
That evening, Bonnie sat on the bed and glanced at Gu Ye.
"Wife, what's wrong?" Gu Ye was puzzled; his wife seemed a bit off.
"Gu Ye, do you have time off for the New Year? I want to go home and visit my family. I miss home." Bao Ni made up her mind that no matter whether Gu Ye had time or not, she would take the child back to visit.
If she is transferred back to Beijing next year or later, she will have even less chance to go back.
"Honey, I really can't get leave this time. My brother said the situation might change, and he might leave Beijing at the end of next year. We might have to go back to Beijing earlier. Before he leaves, he needs to tell me some things." Gu Ye felt bad. For so many years, Bao Ni had always been accommodating to him.
“I guess you don’t have time either. I want to take Liu Jiu and San Qi back and come back after the New Year. If I go back to Beijing, I won’t be able to go back for a while.”
Gu Ye was a little worried, but what Bao Ni said was true. Once they returned to Beijing, he would be very busy and wouldn't have a long vacation to accompany Bao Ni back.
"Okay, I'll go back tomorrow and ask if any of my comrades are going back to visit their families. If they have company on the journey, I can feel more at ease." Gu Ye began to plan how to arrange the journey.
Bonnie thought it was a good idea; she planned to bring some fruit back with her, as these were rare finds this time of year.
Gu Ye was very reliable. The next evening, he told Bao Ni that there really was a comrade-in-arms who was going back to Shandong Province to visit relatives and would be leaving the day after tomorrow.
"I've already made arrangements. You can set off with them and look out for each other on the road." The two comrades Gu Ye found both came from nearby islands, so they would be traveling with Bonnie.
"Gu Ye, you're amazing!" Bonnie excitedly cupped Gu Ye's head and gave him a big kiss.
"Wife, you're kissing the wrong place." He said, cupping Bonnie's face in his hands, aiming for her lips.
If you're going to kiss, kiss on the lips; kissing anywhere else doesn't count.
The two were being affectionate in the bedroom, and luckily no one interfered this time.
The next day, Bonnie went to the Children's Palace to ask for leave. Fortunately, they later hired other diving instructors, so Bonnie was able to get time off.
After asking for leave, Bonnie started packing her things; she's leaving tomorrow.
She went to a familiar fishing village and traded some dried fruit, preserved fruit, and other fruits that could be stored for a long time. Bonnie planned to carry a basket of them back; the opportunity was too good to pass up.
The mother and her children didn't have much luggage and no warm clothes, so Bao Ni called her father again and asked her mother to buy warm clothes for the three of them in advance.
"Okay, I got it. If the three of you come back, Gu Ye won't be able to come back?"
“He’s not on leave. We’re getting on the train tomorrow. I’ll ask Lin Bo or one of the others to pick me up at the station. We can’t buy warm clothes around here.”
After giving her instructions, Bonnie hung up the phone and went home to search for a few things. She finally managed to find two slightly thicker pieces of clothing.
Liu Jiu and San Qi were very happy to know they were going back to their maternal grandparents' house.
Gu Ye watched the mother and her three children excitedly packing their things, and felt a pang of sadness; he was all alone at home.
That evening, Gu Ye pestered Bao Ni to have some fun. This trip had lasted for more than half a month; it was exhausting!
Bonnie was also quite interested, and the two hit it off immediately, having a great time. In the end, they were both drenched in sweat.
"Wife, I don't want you to leave."
"I'll be back soon. I'll be good at home. The sheets are wet and uncomfortable, so I'll get up and change them. I'll wipe myself down too." It's late at night, so I can't take a shower.
Bonnie went to clean up, Gu Ye changed the sheets, and then went out to clean up himself.
Back in bed, the two of them cuddled and fell asleep.
The next day, Gu Ye didn't have time, so the guard helped Bao Ni take her things to the station to meet her two comrades and get to know each other.
After a long and arduous journey, Bonnie and her friends returned from the warm south to the snowy Shandong province.
"Sister Bonnie, over here." Bonnie carried a basket on her back, Liu Jiu carried luggage, and San Qi held her mother's hand.
"Lin Jiang, Lin Mu." Bao Ni saw the two of them, and the three of them walked over.
"Why are you carrying so much stuff all this way?" Lin Jiang and Lin Mu carried the baskets together, walking unsteadily.
"Alright, you two hold onto Liu Jiu and San Qi properly." Liu Jiu put the basket back on his back and looked at his two uncles. They were too weak.
The group first went to Sihaiju to have something to eat, then visited Uncle Chen, before taking a boat back to the island.
