Bonnie spent a lively New Year with her child at her parents' home!
"Grandpa, Grandma, Father, Mother, I'm going back tomorrow. Please take care of yourselves."
Although Bonnie was reluctant, she had no choice but to leave. They were all married people with their own families and responsibilities.
"Mom and Dad, keep this money safe. Buy whatever you want to eat, don't be stingy." Bao Ni handed ten ten-yuan bills to her mother.
"No, we don't need the money. Keep it for yourself. Why are you being so loose with your grip?" Bao Ni's mother patted her daughter, but it was all bark and no bite, like patting off ashes.
“Your mother is right. Don’t be so lenient. Liu Jiu and San Qi are growing up, and there will be many expenses in the future. If Gu Ye is transferred back to Beijing, he will need money to visit relatives. We can’t let people look down on us.” Bao Ni’s father was thinking further ahead. Gu Ye’s family was much better off than theirs.
"Father and Mother, you're overthinking it. Apart from my eldest brother's family, we don't have much contact with the other members of the Gu family anymore. Besides, I earned some money before the New Year, so giving it to you is what I have left. I won't be back for a while after this trip, so leaving some money here will put my mind at ease."
"Mom, Grandpa and Grandma are getting old, you need to take care of yourselves too. Eat and drink well, don't be too frugal. We can only feel at ease when you're healthy."
Bonnie pushed the money over firmly.
"Her mother, put it away." Bonnie's father realized that if he didn't put it away, his daughter wouldn't give up.
“You don’t need to worry about home. We’re all in good health and won’t be doing any heavy work anymore. Your older brother, second brother, and Lin Bo have also given us money. We can eat whatever we want from now on, we won’t be stingy.”
Bao Ni's mother stroked her daughter's hand. Her daughter was a true sweetheart, and everyone on the island envied them for having such a wonderful daughter.
“That’s right. Things will only get better in the future. When you’re healthy, you can see the prosperity and strength of our country and go out to see the beautiful landscapes of our motherland.” Bonnie and her parents envisioned a bright future together.
The next day, Bonnie still carried her basket, which contained a small box of old items she had brought back from the base. There were also Professor Gao's materials and dried seafood that his father had helped prepare—all top-quality items.
The journey was long, so Bao Ni's mother made some food for her, but she couldn't bring anything else.
Bonnie met up with Gu Ye's comrades and they took a car back together.
Gu Ye was the happiest. His wife and children were back, and the house was finally no longer cold and deserted.
"Honey, we can't be apart for so long anymore," Gu Ye muttered to himself, following behind Bao Ni.
This made Liu Jiu and San Qi laugh non-stop; their dad was too clingy.
Bonnie glared at Gu Ye; the child was still there.
Feeling embarrassed to be a third wheel for their parents, Liu Jiu and San Qi ran off laughing and joking.
“The children are gone, how perceptive they are,” Gu Ye kept muttering, occasionally pulling on Bao Ni’s hand.
"That's enough. You used to be gone on missions for three to five months at a time. How did you manage?"
Gu Ye thought for a moment. At that time, he was focused on his mission and couldn't think about anything else. He just wanted to complete the mission and make it back to see Bao Ni.
"At that time, all I was thinking about was how to come back unharmed; I didn't care about anything else."
The two chatted on and on, and Gu Ye also saw his wife's secret stash, a real secret stash, mostly made of gold items, bracelets, hairpins, goldfish, and a few jade items, filling a small box to the brim.
Gu Ye said that they also had some old items in their house, which were buried underground. They would dig them up and give them to Bao Ni after they returned to Beijing.
After Bonnie returned, Gu Ye still had to keep busy. He was leaving in a few months and needed to hand over a lot of work.
Bonnie knew they were leaving, so she started packing up her small warehouse, making sure to take all the supplies with her.
Time flies, and May Day is just around the corner. Gu Ye and the others will be leaving after May Day.
"Bonnie, I heard you're going to leave?"
Sister Zhang leaned against the wall, her face full of reluctance.
She had been struggling because of her low self-esteem. It was only after Bonnie came and spent more time with her that she regained her confidence. Bonnie took them up the mountain, had picnics with them, and helped them find odd jobs…
Bonnie became their pillar of support, and they got used to turning to Bonnie whenever they needed help.
"Yes, I'll be leaving after May Day. If you ever go to Beijing, please look me up."
Although Bonnie didn't particularly like some people in the family compound, she was still very nice to Aunt Zhang and Aunt Chen.
Where there are people, there will be arguments and conflicts of interest; complete harmony is impossible.
Bonnie and Aunt Zhang were whispering to each other over the wall, a wall that had witnessed their friendship. Not to mention, the spot where Aunt Zhang habitually leaned over had a faint dent.
Adults feel reluctant to part ways with their children, and children also have their own circles of friends.
"Liu Jiu, you'll be leaving after May Day. I'll miss you." Cao Shengnan and Liu Jiu hung together on the horizontal bar, expressing their reluctance to part.
"I'll miss you too. We've worked so hard to get along so well, and we've been practicing so smoothly."
I remember going to Beijing in 1969. In the compound, the boys were a bit better, but most of the girls weren't enthusiastic about training.
"Oh well, there's nothing we can do. As children of soldiers, we're used to it. Moving from one place to another. We just made a group of friends, and now we're facing separation again." Cao Shengnan is already in the first year of junior high school, and she often takes on the role of a mother to her two younger brothers, so she's more mature than Liu Jiu.
"Sister Shengnan, I might apply to a military academy or a police academy in the future. Maybe we'll be together again then." Liu Jiu's current plan is to go to a military academy or a police academy. As for whether it will change in a few years, she is not sure.
