Bonnie and her friends were allocated a six-story building. Their apartment was on the third floor, a two-unit-per-floor layout.
This is the configuration for officers at the brigade level and above. Below that, there are three households per floor, and below that, there are tenement buildings.
Bonnie took a look around; the master bedroom was quite spacious, and the other two bedrooms were only slightly smaller. The kitchen, living room, bathroom, and balcony were all quite roomy.
The only thing she's not used to is not having a yard and not being able to grow vegetables. Bonnie is already used to it, planting a couple of rows of vegetables wherever she goes. Although she's not good at cooking, she loves growing vegetables.
The room had been mostly cleaned, and Bonnie asked Liu Jiu and San Qi to clean and tidy up their own rooms.
"Sister-in-law, is Xuanyu adjusting well?"
Gu Xuanyu applied to Renmin University, following in his older brother Gu's footsteps.
"It's alright, but all the students are very hardworking. The library and study rooms are always packed." Aunt Gu was still very pleased; her son was doing very well. In the compound, quite a few people took the college entrance exam this year, but very few actually passed, and even fewer did as well as Xuan Yu.
Han Bei from the Han family and Zheng Tao from the Zheng family both got into military academies, which is good.
Bonnie clicked her tongue, realizing she was right. Ten years had been wasted; this opportunity was too good to pass up. No one would waste such a hard-won learning opportunity, so everyone studied with all their might.
Bonnie and Aunt Gu chatted as they unpacked the packages. They first took out the bedding and clothes and hung them on the balcony to air them out in the wind. They'd gotten smelly after all these days.
All that was left was food, all sorts of dried goods, and Bonnie didn't know where to put them.
"Baoni, how did you prepare so much food?" Aunt Gu was stunned. How long would it take to eat all this?
"This was prepared starting last year. Supplies are still hard to buy, so I dried all of these myself to avoid being completely clueless when I first arrived."
Bonnie always familiarizes herself with the terrain whenever she goes to a new place, but Beijing is a city with complex relationships, so she can't be reckless.
"Sister-in-law, take some back with you later. I've prepared a lot." Bao Ni and Sister-in-law Gu got along well, and Bao Ni was willing to give her anything.
"Okay, it looks delicious. You can't cook, but you can certainly tinker with things." Aunt Gu admired Bonnie a lot; she was such a hamster, she really knew how to collect things.
Sister-in-law Gu helped out for a while, then went home to cook dinner at her house.
Bonnie packed a lot of things in her basket and asked Liu Jiu to help her aunt carry them over.
"Oh dear, I find Liu Jiu so adorable, what a pity!" Sister-in-law Gu had given birth to three children, all of them little ones, and dared not have any more.
“Aunt, favoring sons over daughters is bad, but favoring daughters over sons is also unacceptable.” Sanqi finished tidying up his bedroom, stood at the door, and said very seriously to his aunt.
"Yes, Auntie is wrong. They are the same, all the same, and they are also rare."
"Of course! I'm good-looking and smart, there's no reason why they wouldn't like me!" Sanqi said earnestly, brimming with confidence.
Sister-in-law Gu has forgotten about Sanqi's properties; this child speaks very directly.
Liu Jiu picked up her basket, pulled her aunt away, and said that no one could argue with San Qi.
Bonnie glanced at Sanqi; this kid would get beaten up later.
Gu Ye brought back a bunch of things from outside: thermos flasks, washbasins, rice bowls, chopsticks... all fragile items that he hadn't brought back when he moved.
The two of them worked for quite a while longer, and finally finished getting ready. After washing up, they went to Sister-in-law Gu's house for dinner.
It was the evening rush hour, and the residential compound was bustling with people coming and going. The appearance of Bonnie's family of four attracted quite a few glances.
"This is a new place, which building is it in?"
"I don't recognize him. He looks young, so he's probably not from around here."
"It looks familiar, but I can't remember what it's called!"
...
Bonnie and her friends left behind topics for discussion as they passed by.
"Come in quickly, the food will be ready soon. Xuanyi, Xuanhao, your second uncle and the others are here."
Sister-in-law Gu came out of the kitchen, beckoned Gu Ye and the others in, and called her two younger siblings over to say hello.
"Second Uncle, Second Aunt, hello. Liu Jiu and San Qi, let's watch TV together." Gu Xuanyi remembered Liu Jiu and San Qi. Although he hadn't seen them since they parted ways on the island, they weren't strangers. After all, Liu Jiu had fought several times to protect him.
Gu Xuanhao had never met his second uncle's family before, but the little guy was chubby-cheeked and not afraid of strangers, so he greeted them loudly.
When Bonnie first met Gu Xuanhao, the little guy was very lively.
The children went to play, and Bonnie went into the kitchen to help her sister-in-law.
“Xuanyu only gets weekends off; he lives at school the rest of the time. He’s not used to it yet,” Aunt Gu said to Bao Ni as they chatted.
"Xuanyu looks like a young man now, doesn't he?" The last time we met, he was still a boy going through puberty.
"That's right, he's 1.8 meters tall, a head taller than me, but he's skinny."
"Don't be too greedy. You'll gain weight in a few years. But don't get too fat, or it will affect your appearance." Bonnie thought Gu Ye's figure was great, and he even had abs.
"Big brother, you're back."
Bonnie heard Gu Ye's voice; it was her older brother returning.
Sister-in-law Gu prepared a sumptuous dinner, and both adults and children were very happy.
After finishing their meal, the children worked together to tidy up the table.
Everything was tidied up. Brother Gu invited the children inside to play, saying they had something to discuss.
"Big brother, what's wrong?"
Gu Ye had no idea what his older brother was going to say.
"I wanted to talk to you about what's going to happen next. I might be leaving Beijing at the end of the year, and there are some things I need to explain." Gu Ze had already thought it through and was just waiting for Gu Ye to come back.
"What is it?" Gu Ye felt that work matters couldn't be discussed here, so it had to be a family matter.
