Bonnie and the children spent most of the day pickling two jars of sauerkraut and one jar of salted vegetables.
There were about a hundred cabbages in the cellar, as well as radishes and carrots that Bonnie had grown herself, and potatoes and squash that she had bought... There were quite a few in the cellar, enough to last through the winter.
Bonnie also plans to grow some small green vegetables on the balcony of the family compound and take some soil back with her on her next day off.
"Kids, load these cabbages, radishes, potatoes, and spinach onto the truck, let's go home to the family compound."
"Second Aunt, you take Sanqi back by car, and the three of us will ride the tricycle back."
Gu Xuanyu wanted to try the tricycle, but he had never ridden one before and was afraid he wouldn't be able to ride it well, so he left Liu Jiu to help him. Xuanyi, on the other hand, needed to practice.
Bonnie showed Xuan Yi and Xuan Yu how to ride a tricycle and took San Qi to take the bus.
"Sanqi, do you want to stay?"
"Mom, I don't want to. I want to go home and take a shower. I'm all dirty."
When Sanqi was working, her clothes got wet and dirty, and she almost became a little mud child.
Bonnie looked at the little guy with his brows furrowed, realizing he was about to lose his temper.
The mother and daughter arrived home first. Sanqi couldn't wait to go upstairs to take a shower and change her clothes, while Baoni stayed at the front door to wait for Xuanyu and the others.
"Sister-in-law, what are you doing?"
Bonnie turned around and saw Xu Meifeng.
"Meifeng, I'm waiting for the children at home. Where are you going?"
Bonnie also saw the three children following behind her: the oldest was a girl about the same age as Liu Jiu, and the two younger ones were a pair of twin boys, about five or six years old.
"I'm going to buy some autumn vegetables. It's getting colder and colder. My husband said he was going to buy them, but he had to go to work and didn't come back. I was thinking that if I don't buy them now, they'll be harder to find."
Bonnie heard from Gu Ye that none of their members had rested today; they were all at the team.
Bonnie thought for a moment. Xu Meifeng had difficulty walking and was taking care of three children, so it wasn't easy for her.
"Meifeng, if you're not in a hurry, wait a bit. I'll take you to a nearby village on my tricycle to buy vegetables. They're fresh and cheap there, and you don't need any coupons."
"Sister-in-law, that's too much trouble. I have several children with me, so I can just take a little bit for each of them and make a few trips."
Xu Meifeng was surprised that the sister-in-law of Commander Gu would say that. She was very grateful, but how could she trouble her?
“It’s okay. We are all military wives. The men at home are busy with work and we can’t rely on them most of the time.”
Helping each other out is no big deal. If I need your help in the future, I won't hesitate to ask.
Bonnie's words were sincere, not just empty politeness.
"I'm just afraid I won't be able to help my sister-in-law in any way, because of my leg..."
Xu Meifeng is somewhat insecure. Since she became lame, she has changed a lot. She is less confident and afraid of other people's pity.
"You can help me in so many ways. There are so many things I can't do. I can't cook, I can't sew, I can't knit, and I can't make shoes."
Bao Ni remembered the cotton shoes her mother had sent a few days ago. There were shoes for all four of them, including shoes for Xuan Yu and Xuan Yi. Her mother had specifically asked about their shoe sizes.
"ah!"
Xu Meifeng was quite surprised, thinking, "That can't be right."
"Really, I'm not lying to you."
The two glanced at each other and laughed.
"Oh, my child is back."
Not far away, Gu Xuanyu and his two companions rode over on tricycles, with Xuanyu riding and Liu Jiu and Xuanyi following behind.
"So, how's it going? Have you learned to ride a tricycle yet?"
"We learned it, but at first we weren't quite able to control it. Liu Jiu taught us for a long time."
Xuan Yu didn't expect that what looked simple would actually be quite difficult to do.
"Gu Ye's wife, you're really carefree. It's so dangerous for you to have several children ride their bikes back by yourself."
Bonnie then noticed the middle-aged woman standing next to the tricycle, a woman she didn't recognize.
Who are you?
“I am Xuanyu’s aunt. I saw some children riding a tricycle to transport vegetables and I was worried, so I came to check on them.”
Gu Xuanyu was speechless. He had already said that he wanted to ride the tricycle himself, but his aunt seemed not to understand him.
"Aunt, as I said, it wasn't Second Aunt who made us ride; it was my own request."
Bonnie understood; this was her sister-in-law's sister-in-law.
"Sister-in-law, for the sake of my sister-in-law, I'll call you sister-in-law too. Putting aside the fact that the children are all so big, why can't they ride their own bikes?"
Besides, my sister-in-law entrusted her child to my care, so I know exactly how to take care of her.
Why worry about things that don't concern you? Why are you acting like a big shot around her?
"Are you saying I'm meddling? I'm only doing this for the child?"
"Alright, if you need anything, call my sister-in-law. I can't talk to you."
Xuanyu, take your younger siblings and carry the vegetables back. I need to use a tricycle.
Meifeng, let the children play at my house for a while. I'll take you grocery shopping; it'll be done in one trip, saving you the trouble.
Bonnie ignored Xuan Yu's aunt; it was pointless to talk to her, and she didn't even know her.
"You, you, you're driving me crazy."
Xuanyu's aunt left in a huff. She had to talk to her mother-in-law about how the Gu family was taking care of the child and making him do chores.
Ignoring Xuan Yu's grumbling aunt, Bonnie took Xu Meifeng to their building.
"Unload the vegetables, and each of you take a few upstairs. We're going to buy groceries. Xuanyu, take good care of your younger siblings."
"Okay, Auntie, don't worry, leave it to me."
Bonnie rode her bike away with Xu Meifeng to the village she frequented.
"Sister-in-law, will that other sister-in-law tell on us?"
"Oh, you mean my sister-in-law's sister-in-law? It's fine, let her do whatever she wants. My sister-in-law entrusted her child to me to take care of, and how I take care of the child is up to me. If she wants to be good to the child, that's fine, but she can't find fault with me."
