In the room on the second floor, after changing her clothes, Bonnie saw Gu Ye sitting on the bed with red, swollen eyes from crying, looking slightly tired.
"I'm sleepy, will you sleep with me for a while?"
"Huh? Okay, I'll sleep with you for a while." Gu Ye realized what was happening, helped Bao Ni to bed, and lay down next to her.
Gu Ye felt his eyes were dry and his heart was racing. He had never panicked, not even when facing death.
Bonnie next to him seemed to be asleep. Gu Ye rested his head on Bonnie's arm, put his arm around Bonnie's waist, and slowly calmed down before drifting off to sleep as well.
When the two woke up, it was already dark.
"Gu Ye, I'm hungry." Bonnie could hear her stomach growling.
“I heard you.”
Gu Ye reverted to his usual lazy self at home on the island.
"What do you want to eat, roast duck, hot pot, or Lao Mo?" Gu Ye had a good sleep, his mind was clear, and his mood was calm. Before going back, he wanted to take Lin Baoni to eat, drink, and have fun in Beijing.
"Hot mutton hotpot." Just thinking about tender slices of mutton being dipped in boiling broth and then drizzled with sesame sauce makes my mouth water.
"Look at how greedy you are, change your clothes and let's go."
Alright!
Bonnie quickly got up and changed her clothes, exclaiming, "Oh my god!"
"What's wrong?"
"What do you think? My arm is numb!" Bonnie slowly moved it, feeling a pricking sensation.
"Comrade Lin Baoni, you've worked hard. From now on, you can rest your head on my arm, for the rest of your life!" Gu Ye reached out and rubbed Baoni's arm. How could she be so lovable!
"Ugh, get out of the way, I'm changing my clothes."
"I'll wait for you downstairs. No rush, the mutton won't run away." Gu Ye said, then opened the door and went downstairs. Bonnie's shoe hit the door as she threw it.
"You're awake?" Grandpa Gu sat on the sofa in the living room, looking at the energetic Gu Ye, and felt completely relieved.
"Yes, I'm awake. I'm sorry to have worried Grandpa. Have you eaten, Grandpa? I'm going to take Bonnie out for hot pot so she can try some of Beijing's specialties and go for a walk."
Gu Ye chatted casually with his grandfather, feeling relaxed and natural, no longer tense.
"Okay, take Bonnie out for some fun. Take advantage of the holiday to shop around, buy some nice clothes, and eat some good food. It's not easy for her to come back here."
Grandpa Gu was grateful to Lin Baoni, who not only saved Gu Ye's life but also healed his heartache.
"Grandpa, we're going out for hot pot, do you want to come?" Bonnie wasn't afraid of Grandpa Gu and greeted him as if he were her own grandfather.
"You guys go ahead, I've finished eating. Here, take this and buy some good food." Grandpa Gu took an envelope out of his pocket and handed it to Bonnie.
"Thank you, Grandpa. I'll buy lots of delicious food." Bonnie accepted it without hesitation.
It's quite heavy, there must be a lot of it. It seems Grandpa prepared it in advance.
"Go ahead, eat more." Grandpa Gu was happy; it had been a long time since a younger generation had spoken to him so intimately.
Gu Ye looked at Bao Ni with a smile; she was a little money-grubber, her eyes practically disappearing with laughter.
"So happy?"
"I'm so happy, this is from my grandpa."
Bonnie put the envelope in her pocket and patted it with her hand.
Gu Ye smiled and pulled Bao Ni away.
Grandpa Gu smiled as he watched the interaction between the two. How wonderful.
Back then, hot pot restaurants didn't have as many options, and you could smell the distinctive muttony aroma as soon as you entered.
After finding a seat, Gu Ye handed the menu to Bao Ni and asked her to order.
"You order, I won't refuse anything." Bonnie was still unfamiliar with hot pot restaurants at this time. The simple and elegant decoration looked very comfortable and made her feel more like she was eating.
After a while, the pot boiled, and Gu Ye cooked a slice of mutton and put it in Bao Ni's bowl, saying, "Try it."
"Okay, I'll do it myself, you eat too." Bonnie couldn't wait to dip the slices of meat in the sauce and put them in her mouth. Delicious, so delicious!
The two of them picked up their chopsticks and ate with great relish.
Feeling like they had food stuck in their throats, the two ate the last piece of meat, unable to eat anymore.
No one knows how much meat they ate, but everyone around them came to see them.
Regardless of that, after eating and drinking my fill, I went outside and took a breath of the cold wind, which carried a strong smell of mutton.
"Let's walk back. I've eaten too much, I'm a little full." Bonnie rubbed her stomach, she was stuffed.
“Okay, let’s walk. We’ll be there in an hour.” Gu Ye didn’t mind; they were used to it from their daily training.
Bonnie followed Gu Ye, but she didn't quite remember the way.
Once they left the city, they drove further and further out, and there were fewer people around. Gu Ye reached out and took Bao Ni's hand; he hadn't felt comfortable doing so earlier because of the crowd. Now that they were alone, he could finally hold Bao Ni's hand.
By the time they arrived at the compound, it was already completely dark, and the dim streetlights cast long shadows of the two of them.
There was no one in the living room; I don't know if they were asleep or in their rooms.
Gu Ye and his companion quietly went upstairs, washed up, and prepared to go to sleep, as they were going to the Martyrs' Cemetery the next day.
The next morning, at the breakfast table, I saw Gu Feng and his family of three and greeted them briefly.
"Gu Ye, where are you guys going today?"
"Grandpa, let's go to the Martyrs' Cemetery today and talk to my mom." Gu Ye wanted to tell his mother that he was doing well and to put her mind at ease.
"Okay, go ahead and have a good talk with your mom."
Grandpa Gu felt it was a pity. Xu Ning was a very capable person who balanced work and family very well and was a virtuous wife who could manage the household. Unfortunately, the Gu family was not blessed, and Gu Xiangdong was even less fortunate. Such a good wife and such a good son, yet they couldn't keep them.
Grandma Gu didn't say a word from beginning to end, and Gu Ye didn't care. If she didn't like him, she just didn't like him. He couldn't force Grandma to like him; that was impossible.
After finishing their meal, they each left.
Gu Ye and Bao Ni arrived at the Martyrs' Cemetery, where a layer of dust covered Gu's mother's tombstone.
Gu Ye squatted down and wiped it clean little by little.
Bonnie looked at the photo of Gu's mother on the tombstone. She was a very capable woman with a resolute gaze but a gentle face. She was clearly a good mother.
Gu Ye muttered to himself, talking about his own affairs and Bao Ni's. He reassured his mother that he was doing well and that he and his brother would care for and support each other, living a good life together!
The two stood quietly in front of the tombstone, gazing at Gu's mother's photo. Finally, they bowed three times and left.
Mom, I will forget the unpleasant things and stop craving your father's love. Now I will strive to be a good husband, and when we have children, I will be a good father, protecting our country, loving our family, and living a happy life.
This was Gu Ye's promise to his mother in his heart!
From this moment on, the most important person in Gu Ye's heart was Lin Baoni, the woman who had entered his life and shared life and death with him. They would have children together, face the ups and downs of life together, and eventually lie in the same coffin.
Gu Ye never imagined that there would be a woman in his life. From the moment his mother left, he made up his mind that he would only have one person in his life, and even if he could not die on the battlefield, he would live out his days alone!
Gu Ye patted Bonnie's head, feeling very happy!
