Bonnie has sent out all the New Year's goods that needed to be mailed; all that's left are to visit a few families in Beijing.
For the uncles Gu Ye was going to visit, Bao Ni prepared seafood, dried fruit, beef, and a chicken.
We were going to Grandma Gu's place too, so Bonnie bought her a new outfit based on the old lady's height and weight.
The food and supplies... who knows who will benefit from them in the end? Bonnie couldn't bear to think about it.
Han Ye and his group of childhood friends of Gu Ye also prepared seafood and dried fruit, but not cigarettes and alcohol, they had everything they needed.
Bonnie sorted the seafood and dried fruit at home beforehand, and then went to the courtyard to pick up the meat when it was time to deliver it.
As for Gu Xiangdong and Xu Fang, Bao Ni will not send them New Year's gifts, nor will she prepare any for Gu's third uncle's family or Gu's aunt's family.
Since her children, Liu Jiu and San Qi, were born, she has never received a single gift from them.
Human relationships are based on give and take; trying to use seniority to intimidate others is impossible and should not even be considered.
Meanwhile, Bonnie was busy preparing for the Lunar New Year. She had already made new clothes and bought New Year's goods. She had some left over and was just waiting to buy them a day or two before the New Year.
That morning, Bonnie, carrying New Year's gifts for Sister-in-law Gu's parents, knocked on the door of the Shen family.
"Is this Gu Ye's wife?"
When Sister-in-law Shen opened the door and saw Bao Ni, she was a little hesitant to recognize her, as they hadn't met much before.
"Hello, sister-in-law. I am Lin Baoni, Gu Ye's wife. It's almost Chinese New Year, so I've come to visit your parents."
Hearing the commotion inside, Old Mrs. Shen came out. "Is this Second Aunt Xuanyu? Come in quickly."
The old lady greeted her warmly and pulled Bonnie into her room.
Grandpa Shen was also inside; it was cold, and he didn't want to go out.
"Hello, Uncle!"
"Okay, why didn't Xuan Yu and the others come?"
The old man misses his grandson a bit; he hasn't seen him for a while.
"Xuanyu and the others were all taken by Gu Ye to the army for training. He left in a hurry and didn't have time to tell you. He was thinking of coming back when he returned."
Bonnie has been busy preparing for the New Year and has really forgotten.
"They went to the special forces unit?"
The old man was also a retired soldier, so he understands many things.
"Yes, they had a new recruit training camp, so Gu Ye took all four of his children with him."
"It's still Gu Ye. I've said before that boys need more training. Gu Ze doesn't have time, and Jiaqi can't bring herself to do it. Xuan Yu is a bit better; he knows how to train on his own. Xuan Yi is too spoiled."
The old man was a little sad. His grandson hadn't trained well, and none of his other grandsons were hard-working enough to amount to anything.
“Xuanyi is doing well now. He has been consistently doing morning exercises for the past six months, and he hasn’t fallen behind in this training camp.”
Bonnie defended Gu Xuanyi and made the old man happy, as he hoped his descendants would achieve something. Besides, she'd heard that the younger generation of the Shen family were generally not very capable and none of them stood out.
"Really? That's good, that's good. Gu Ye really knows how to discipline children."
The old man was happy; his grandson was also his descendant, and he hoped he would do well.
"Uncle, Aunt, I don't know what you like to eat, but I hope you like these things."
Bonnie bought a gift set of four items: cigarettes, alcohol, candy, and tea, all purchased from a department store.
"You silly child, just come, why bring anything else? You've gone to so much trouble for Xuanyu and Xuanyi. We, as their grandparents, should be taking care of them, but unfortunately we're not able to. Thank you for your help."
Grandma Shen touched Bonnie's hand with great joy; she really liked this child.
In the past six months, since Jiaqi left, Xuanyu and Xuanyi have come to visit them. They said that their second aunt treats them well, providing them with food and other necessities just like Liujiu and the others. She even cooks delicious food and sends it to Xuanyu. She really puts her heart into it.
"Auntie, look at what you're saying. Aren't I their second aunt? We're family, so let's not be so formal."
Bonnie felt embarrassed by the praise, and she didn't do much more, since her children were all grown up.
After chatting with the two elderly people for a while, Bonnie said goodbye and went home.
Behind her, a plump middle-aged woman stared at Bao Ni's back for a while, confirming that she was Gu's daughter-in-law and was going to Gu Ze's mother-in-law's house.
"She went to deliver New Year's gifts. She went to Gu Ze's father-in-law's house, but I don't know if she went to her own parents-in-law's house either."
The plump aunt and Xu Fang had a good relationship; both had been mistresses who rose to power back then, and they were birds of a feather.
"Xu Fang, are you home?"
The plump aunt was quite efficient; she immediately went to find Xu Fang.
"Big Plum, come in. Where could I have gone if I wasn't home?"
Xu Fang was listless; it was just her and Gu Bei's son at home.
"Are you home alone? Where's your brother-in-law?"
"Everyone's gone out; my child and I are at home."
Xu Fang brought out a fruit platter, and the two sat on the sofa chatting, while Gu Bei's son watched TV inside.
"Why do you always stay at home? Don't you get bored? Have you bought all the New Year's goods?"
Da Meizi looked at Xu Fang, who looked much older and lacked energy.
"I haven't done anything, I don't want to. I'm going to visit my grandmother during the Lunar New Year, so I didn't prepare anything. I'm not coming back, so why bother with all that?"
Xu Fang was heartbroken. Gu Mei had never come back since she moved away.
Gu Xi is the same; she rarely goes home except for holidays. Gu Bei is even worse; you can't see him for days at a time, and Qian Lanlan is the same kind of person.
What terrible things have I done? Three children, and not one of them is easy to deal with.
"Sister Fang, has Gu Ye's wife come to deliver New Year's gifts?"
"Who is it? Gu Ye's wife? What are you thinking? She'd only be able to deliver New Year's gifts to us if the sun rose in the west."
From the first time Xu Fang met Lin Baoni, she knew that Lin Baoni was no pushover. Over the years, Lin Baoni had suffered repeated defeats and had never gained any advantage.
Gu Ye was an even more formidable figure; even Gu Xiangdong was afraid of him, let alone her.
