In the south, Gu Ze finally finished his work and could rest for an afternoon.
I've been here for almost a year now. It's really tiring, but I've also achieved some real results.
I walked back to the family compound with light steps, exchanging a few words with people I knew and didn't know, until I entered my home and finally relaxed a little.
"You're back. Do you still need to go today?"
Gu Ze could tell at a glance that his sister-in-law looked preoccupied.
"No need to go. Take a normal rest this afternoon. Where's Xuanhao?"
It's quite strange that I didn't hear my youngest son making a fuss at home.
"I went next door to play with my classmates. Did you have lunch?"
Sister-in-law Gu felt hungry and then remembered that she hadn't eaten yet.
"I haven't eaten yet. I just finished work and came back. Is there any food at home?"
"No, I haven't eaten either. I'll cook some noodles."
Sister-in-law Gu got up and went to the kitchen. She felt that her parents' most important people were always their son and grandson, while she and her child had to come second.
"What's wrong? You look so troubled. Did something happen to your father-in-law and the others?"
It's no wonder Gu Ye asked that question; he and Gu Ye had just spoken on the phone that morning, and everything at home was normal.
"Nothing happened. It's just that my sister-in-law went to see Bonnie today, wanting her third son to study English with Xuanyi and the others, but Bonnie refused."
My mom called me and implied that I shouldn't take it to heart and shouldn't stoop to my sister-in-law's level. I felt really upset.
"How could they be like that? As my family, they never think about me at all. They're always so self-righteous, and then they expect me to be understanding. There's no way they're like that."
Sister-in-law Gu sat there pondering for a long time, feeling increasingly frustrated. Why was she being treated this way?
"How did my sister-in-law know that Xuanyi and the others were learning foreign languages? Gu Ye said that Bao Ni is used to making a fortune in silence, and no one has told her about it."
Gu Ze also knew Ms. Zhai, but they weren't close; they had only met a few times.
He was quite surprised when he heard about it; he didn't expect that Bonnie and Professor Gao were still in contact and had a good relationship.
It was unexpected that Ms. Zhai would have a special affinity for Panax notoginseng, and then wholeheartedly teach several children foreign languages. It was all quite amazing.
"It must have been Xuanyi who accidentally let it slip, and my sister-in-law took it to heart. She didn't know she was looking for Ms. Zhai; she thought we had found a great English teacher."
Sister-in-law Gu was angry because her sister-in-law didn't take Bao Ni seriously and came to the door without even saying hello, making her feel sorry for Bao Ni.
Gu Ye probably doesn't know about this yet; otherwise, given how protective he is of Bao Ni, Gu Ze would have known long ago.
"Bonnie isn't petty, and she won't hold a grudge. She's on good terms with you and doesn't want any misunderstandings. Once things are cleared up, everything will be fine."
Xuanyu and Xuanyi came over during summer vacation; they must have changed a lot by now.
Gu Ye said they've been consistently doing morning exercises and even participated in special training, so they should have grown taller and stronger. Didn't Xuan Yi say he eats three bowls of rice in one meal?
Gu Ze coaxed his wife, explaining that it must be tough for her to come to a place where she knew no one, couldn't speak the language, and was in a different environment.
As for his father-in-law's family, Gu Ze kept a mental record of their situation.
After chatting with Gu Ze for a bit, Sister-in-law Gu felt much better. Her child was already so grown up, so the attitude of her family members wasn't really that important anymore.
After all, her husband and children would be the ones to spend the rest of her life with her. Once her parents passed away, her brother and sister-in-law would be even less important.
At noon, the two ate plain noodles. Remembering what Xuanyi had said about the braised goose in an iron pot they had eaten, their mouths watered.
The next day, Gu Ze arrived at the office, finished his work, and it was lunchtime.
He didn't rush to eat, but instead called Xuanyu's school. There were some things he needed to talk to Xuanyu about.
"Dad, you haven't gone to eat yet, it's already noon."
Gu Xuanyu was called to answer the phone after he finished eating, and he didn't know what his father wanted to do.
"I'll go eat in a bit. Did you go to your second uncle's house yesterday?"
"No, there was a school event yesterday morning. What happened? Did something happen to your second uncle's family?"
Gu Xuanyu was a little anxious; he was very close to his second uncle's family.
"No, it's just that your eldest aunt went to your second aunt yesterday, wanting her third son to learn English with you, but your second aunt refused and said some unpleasant things."
Gu Xuanyu hadn't expected this. How did his aunt know about their English lessons? His second aunt had warned him that this matter shouldn't be publicized.
How did my aunt know?
"It's possible that Xuanyi mentioned it unintentionally. I called you to let you know about this."
Find some time to talk to Xuanyi about your second uncle's family matters. Regardless of whether they are related to you or not, don't tell anyone, including your maternal grandparents.
You're old enough to understand that your maternal grandparents value your uncles and cousins the most, while your mother and the rest of you come after them.
However, we are very close to your second uncle. You and Liu Jiu Sanqi must support each other from now on. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Gu Ze felt that his eldest son should understand some things that adults are unwilling to face, especially those related to family relationships.
“Dad, I know, I’ve always known. I’ll find some time to talk to Xuanyi about it; he might not realize it.”
He mentioned once that his grandfather had inquired about his studies, and that his grandfather might have tricked him into revealing information.
Gu Xuanyu felt a pang of sadness. When they were little, they often visited their maternal grandmother's house, and they...
Gu Ze gave a few more instructions and then hung up the phone. He had to hurry up and eat, or there wouldn't be any left.
After hanging up the phone, Gu Xuanyu composed himself, thanked the teacher, and left.
