Bao Ni took her family on a tour of the compound, and many people found out, including Gu Xiangdong and the Shen family.
Gu Xiangdong was in a hurry to go out because Gu Bei had gotten into trouble outside. Well, it wasn't really trouble; he had been put in a sack, beaten up, and left in an alley until the next day when he was spotted by a street sweeper.
Gu Xiangdong looked at Gu Bei, who had been beaten black and blue, and wondered how much he had drunk, as he was still not sober.
Xu Fang sobbed, cursing the person who hit her to die a horrible death, and also cursing Qian Lanlan, saying that all she did all day was go out and have fun, and that she didn't even come to visit her husband who was in the hospital...
Looking at Xu Fang, who had a bitter expression and kept grumbling, Gu Xiangdong felt very unfamiliar with her. Was this still the same person? How had she changed so much?
After paying the hospital fees, Xu Fang stayed to take care of Gu Bei, her beloved son, whom she had spoiled since he was a child, and she would accept him no matter how much of a jerk he was.
Gu Xiangdong went home, but Gu Bei's son still needs someone to look after him and get him some food.
Gu Xiangdong had just returned to the compound when he overheard people talking about how Gu Ye's father-in-law had arrived. He said the man was very honest and simple, which explained why Lin Baoni was so straightforward; she took after her parents...
Gu Xiangdong suddenly realized that the group of people he had met that morning were Lin Baoni's family, his in-laws, but unfortunately, they didn't acknowledge it.
Gu Xiangdong didn't say anything, nor did he have the right to say anything. Everyone in the compound, except for the infants, knew about the mess at home.
"Gu Xiangdong squandered a winning hand!"
This is the sentiment of people his age. Xu Ning was someone so admired, and her two sons were so outstanding. In the end, Gu Xiangdong lost the watermelon and picked up a sesame seed.
"Serves him right, this is retribution, retribution for betraying his wife."
These are the sentiments of some women. They hate women who destroy other people's families the most, but the most hateful ones should be the men, who have lost all sense of decency.
Gu Xiangdong went home, and even without listening, he knew what some of the voices were saying; he was a joke.
Bonnie didn't hear any of this; she had already taken her parents back to the courtyard house.
The phone rang as soon as I stepped inside the house.
Hello, who is this?
"Bonnie, this is Gao Cheng. Where did you go? I've called you several times already."
Professor Gao heard from Lao Zhai that Bao Ni's parents and grandparents had all come over, so he was anxious to contact them and catch up with his old friend. He called several times, but no one answered, and the old man got worried.
"Professor Gao, we've returned to our family compound. We just came in."
Bonnie didn't know what urgent matter Professor Gao had, so she called him several times.
"Didn't I hear your parents are here? I need to do my duty as a host and catch up with Brother Lin. You too, they're here and you didn't even let me know. If Old Zhai hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known!"
Professor Gao's tone was tinged with complaint, while Bonnie chuckled on the phone.
“My parents aren’t in a hurry to leave. You’re so busy, they’re thinking of having a get-together after you’re done with your work. What’s the rush?”
When Bonnie saw her father come in, she handed him the phone. "Professor Gao, my dad's here. You two can talk."
When Bonnie's dad learned it was Professor Gao, he was quite happy. He took the microphone and went to catch up with his old friend.
In the courtyard, Grandpa and Grandma were sunbathing. The May sun was neither too hot nor too cold, just right.
The two elderly people had completely white hair and wrinkles all over their faces, but looking at them, the scene was beautiful.
"What are you looking at?"
Bonnie's dad came out and saw his daughter staring blankly.
"Look at Grandpa and Grandma, they've been together for decades, raising children, dealing with the daily grind of life, and now they can still bask in the sun together. How happy they are!"
"Silly girl, isn't this how everyone goes through it?"
Bonnie didn't argue with her father. Decades later, there would be very few couples like them, and people's tolerance and understanding of each other would be much lower.
"Professor Gao, are you pleased that you could come?"
"Yeah, I didn't expect you guys to still be in touch. He's a university professor, yet he still remembers me and keeps calling me 'brother.' It warms my heart."
Bonnie's father didn't think too much about it at the time. His daughter suggested that he shouldn't be too harsh on those who had been sent down to the countryside, and he agreed. They weren't enemy agents; they were just people who had been implicated.
Now, almost all of those who were sent down have been exonerated. I don't know about others, but everyone in their group has left.
Bonnie's father received several letters confirming that they were safe, which put his mind at ease. He wasn't expecting anything in return, just that they wouldn't retaliate against the islanders.
"By the way, Professor Gao said he's treating us to dinner tonight. He'll let you know once he's booked the place."
Bonnie's father declined for a long time, and Professor Gao was about to get angry, before he finally agreed.
“Sure, it’s rare for Professor Gao to have time, so it would be nice to get together. His children aren’t around either. We get together sometimes, but he’s too busy with work, so it’s not easy for us to get together.”
Bonnie sought out Professor Gao because of her child's foreign language learning needs. As they spent more time together, their relationship actually improved.
Relationships between people are likely built through give and take. I used to be afraid of bothering others and rarely asked for favors, but later I realized that you only give others the opportunity to bother you when you bother them.
In the evening, Gu Ye brought the children over, and Professor Gao had also made a reservation at a roast duck restaurant near their courtyard house.
Perhaps considering that there were many of them, the location was chosen to be very close to their home.
Professor Zhai was also invited, but Professor Gao said there was no need to pick him up, as he now has a car provided.
At the agreed time, Bao Ni and her friends, along with Teacher Zhai, headed to the roast duck restaurant together.
"Old Gao did a good job this time. He chose the perfect location. Otherwise, with all this people going back and forth, what would they eat?"
