"Oh dear, Xuanyi, why are you using crutches now? How's your leg? Will it become uneven in length? And your second aunt, how did she end up taking care of you in the hospital?"
As soon as Sister-in-law Shen, Gu Xuanyi's aunt, finished speaking, the room fell silent. She still thought she was right. Her sister-in-law was just incompetent; she didn't trust her grandparents, uncles, or aunts, but she trusted her aunt. She couldn't distinguish between inside and outside the family.
"Aunt, why are you talking about my second aunt? What does my injury have to do with my second aunt? How come she didn't take good care of me?"
The food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the things we learn are all arranged by my second aunt. As our aunt, have you ever cooked a meal for us or made us a new piece of clothing?
"What right do people who do nothing have to stand up and criticize those who are doing things? Besides, my leg is just a fracture; there won't be any problems."
Gu Xuanyi was still upset because he had been tricked into revealing information about learning English, which had caused quite a stir.
Today was even worse. Before he could even do anything, his aunt was subtly criticizing his second aunt. He really couldn't hold back. What right did she have to do that?
Sister-in-law Shen rolled her eyes in anger after Gu Xuanyi's sharp retort.
"Gu Xuanyi, how dare you talk to me like that? Don't you have any manners? Who taught you to talk to your elders like that?"
Gu Xuanyi was furious and opened his mouth to retort, but his brother pulled him back, and he angrily shut his mouth.
“Aunt, elders need to act like elders to be respected. Tell me, in what way do you resemble an elder? My second aunt, ask yourself honestly, how many of the things she does can you do?”
Gu Xuanyu always spoke slowly and deliberately, but his eyes, when he stared at people, were anything but gentle.
When Gu Xuanyu stared at her, Sister-in-law Shen suddenly felt a little guilty, uncomfortable, and even a little scared. This child looked too much like his father.
The two elders of the Shen family and Shen's second aunt hated Shen's eldest aunt to death in their hearts. Did this person only grow old but not smart? Did her brain degenerate?
To spout nonsense on someone else's turf, have you never been beaten before and don't know the pain?
"Xuanyi, come and sit down. Your legs must be getting uncomfortable from standing for so long."
"Xuanyu, your aunt isn't very good at speaking, let's not stoop to her level. Your second aunt, she's genuinely trying to do what's best for you."
Grandma Shen pulled Gu Xuanyi to sit next to her and then spoke highly of Bao Ni to her eldest grandson.
They all live in the same residential compound, and everyone can see what the Gu family's children are like in terms of their clothes and appearance. Just recently, their new coats made many of the other children envious, and they all clamored to have the same ones.
What's most admirable is that Gu Ye's two children have it, and so do Xuan Yu and Xuan Yi. It's just that the eldest son's wife seems blind, saying nonsensical things, making their good relationship increasingly distant.
As Gu Xuanyu listened to his grandmother's words, the tender affection he felt as a child was gone, and he couldn't feel that simple love anymore. But he didn't say anything. As he grew up, he would experience the troubles of the adult world.
"Grandpa, Grandma, Auntie, were you just saying that without thinking? It doesn't matter if you say I'm too dapper, we're the younger generation after all."
However, my second aunt has taken care of us tirelessly, and her sacrifices for us are no less than those of our parents. My aunt-in-law should try to be more considerate in the future.
Xuan Yu said this while looking at his maternal grandfather, and he was very serious.
“Xuanyu, your aunt misspoke. I’ll have your uncle teach her a lesson later. Your second aunt is great; the fact that you defended her shows that you both know how to be grateful.”
Grandpa Shen was also angry with his eldest daughter-in-law, but since he was here, he couldn't do anything to her. Alas, his eldest son didn't know how to raise his wife!
Gu Xuanyu didn't say anything more. Many things don't need others to comment on them.
"Ta-da..."
While everyone was silent, someone knocked on the door.
"Second Aunt is back, brother, go open the door quickly."
Gu Xuanyi perked up; his second aunt had returned.
Xuan Yu immediately got up to open the door. His second aunt had been out for half a day and had probably bought a lot of things. In any case, she couldn't relax.
"Second Aunt, why did you buy so much stuff? It's so heavy! Could you have called me from downstairs?"
Gu Xuanyu took the things from his second aunt's hands, leaning forward slightly; they were too heavy.
"Xuanyu, you still need to train!"
Bonnie chuckled and patted Xuanyu on the shoulder, saying his stamina needed improvement.
"Bonnie's back! What did you buy? You must have worked so hard!"
Grandma Shen looked at the two people chatting and laughing at the door. They had a very good relationship, which was obvious to anyone with eyes.
"Oh, Uncle Shen and Auntie are here. They must have come to see Xuan Yi. Did your sister-in-law call you? I've been too busy to call."
Bonnie was surprised to see the two elders of the Shen family and their two sisters-in-law. She exchanged a few pleasantries with them.
"Xuanyu, take the things to the kitchen first. Take out the chicken and duck, as well as the big bones and ribs, and divide them up."
I was lucky today. They were slaughtering pigs in Dayang Village, and I also bought a few old hens and ducks; they'll make great soup.
Bonnie returned home with a full load of chicken, duck, fish, and meat.
"Okay, Auntie, please sit down and rest for a while. You've been busy all day, and it's so cold outside."
Gu Xuanyu carried the basket to the kitchen. He would have to make another trip to carry the other bag, as he couldn't lift it. It seemed he really needed to exercise more.
"Second Aunt, you should rest. Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt, I'm going inside to study. I haven't finished reading the notes that Liu Jiu brought back yet."
Gu Xuanyi was getting a little anxious; taking leave now would interfere too much with his studies.
"Go on, studying is the most important thing. We'll talk to your second aunt for a bit."
When Grandma Shen heard that her grandson wanted to study, she quickly told him to go back to his room.
