After seeing the Shen family off, Bao Ni and Xuan Yu quickly disposed of the things they had bought.
Bonnie first put the pork bones in a pot of cold water with ginger slices to blanch them and remove the fishy smell.
We'll keep the old hen to make soup, and the old duck will also be used for soup. Bao Ni chopped up two roosters, each weighing three or four pounds, to stir-fry for dinner. Gu Ye will be back tonight too, so the whole family will be together.
The spare ribs and the remaining large bones are all stored in the storage box outside on the balcony. It's already several degrees below zero outside, so they're safe to keep there.
Chop the chicken and set it aside for later use, waiting for Gu Ye or Sanqi to come back before cooking. Xuan Yu's cooking skills are just average.
However, the bone broth can be simmered first, which takes time and should be cooked slowly. Seasoning can be added when the chef returns.
"Xuanyu, you stay home with Xuanyi. I'll go to the courtyard house to see if there are any big fish. Your second uncle will be back tonight, so we'll have a nice meal together."
"Okay, Second Aunt, take your time. I'll keep an eye on the bone broth, and I'll prepare lunch for Xuanyi too, so you don't need to rush back."
Xuanyu also missed his second uncle; he hadn't seen him for several days.
Bonnie rode away on a tricycle, taking a male duck with her as a gift for Teacher Zhai.
The vegetable gardens in the courtyard houses were all bare; the vegetables had all been harvested.
Bonnie went to the pond first. A thin layer of ice had formed on the surface of the water, reflecting colorful light under the sunlight.
This beautiful scene was shattered by Bonnie; with a single swipe of her rake, the ice surface was smashed to pieces.
Bonnie picked up a specially made net bag, which was actually a wooden stick with a half-meter-long thick iron wire fixed to the front end. Another thick iron wire was bent into a semi-circle and welded to the iron wire on the wooden stick.
A rake net is made by sewing a net from fishing nets and tying it to a semi-circular iron ring. This was made by Bonnie's dad when he came. Almost every family on their island has one, but most of them are made of wood or bamboo.
Bonnie dipped the rake net into the water and scooped it up with force. Surprisingly, she caught quite a few fish, both big and small. The fish that had just surfaced jumped and splashed around.
When we released the fish fry, we released some common freshwater fish that were easy to raise.
White lotus, silver carp, common carp, crucian carp, grass roots...
The fish fry I bought at the time were a mixed bag, and there were some that Bonnie didn't recognize, so I just threw them all into the pond.
Bonnie picked out the big ones and threw the small ones back. After repeating this several times, she picked out more than ten fish weighing two or three pounds each, enough for several meals.
I went to the cellar and took out a few cabbages, potatoes, and squash... enough to last me eight to ten days.
Bonnie locked the door, delivered some food to Teacher Zhai, chatted for a while, had lunch at Teacher Zhai's house, and then rode her tricycle home.
"Second Uncle, Second Aunt is back. I'm going down to greet her."
Gu Xuanyu kept glancing downstairs. When he saw his second aunt riding over on her bicycle, he quickly called out to her, got dressed, and went downstairs.
Gu Ye was stewing chicken in the kitchen when he heard Xuan Yu's words. He was happy because his wife had returned.
When Gu Ye returned home in the afternoon, his wife wasn't there, and he felt a sense of emptiness.
Bonnie and Xuanyu unpacked the things and saw Gu Ye at the door. "Didn't you eat properly? You've lost weight again!"
"I haven't lost much weight, just two or three pounds."
Gu Ye took the things from Bao Ni's hands and carried them to the kitchen. Xuan Yu, who was standing next to him, was truly impressed. How did his second aunt notice that he had lost two or three pounds? How come he hadn't noticed that his second uncle had lost weight?
Bonnie followed Gu Ye into the kitchen and watched him cook, then sat down to rest her legs.
Gu Xuanyu took the things into the kitchen, smiled as he watched his second uncle and second aunt busy at work, then left the kitchen and went back inside.
"Honey, I heard from Gu Xuanyu that you're taking Xuanyi to school on Monday. Won't that be too tiring? He's almost 1.7 meters tall and weighs over 100 pounds."
As soon as Gu Ye returned, Xuan Yu told him about the Shen family's visit and his maternal grandfather's plan to have Xuan Yi recuperate at their home.
Gu Ye found out too; his wife said she was going to carry Xuan Yi to school, and he felt a little sorry for her. For a long time afterward, he didn't have time to take care of the family, and Bao Ni had to shoulder everything alone.
"It might be a little tiring, but it's not a big problem. You know I'm strong, and although Xuanyi is tall, he's not fat."
The main problem is that the child's leg was injured, but their heart was also broken. They were just thinking of others, but unexpectedly got hurt instead. It must be so painful for them.
Staying at home all the time, he's anxious about his studies, and that anxiety and stress aren't good for his recovery. The doctor said he should recover pretty much in a little over a month; the fatigue is just temporary.
Bonnie didn't feel particularly tired, but her child's mental health was more important, especially for teenagers. It was better to let him go to school and face things honestly than to let him overthink at home.
"My dear wife, you've worked so hard. I will definitely try my best to live a good life and take you to see the beautiful landscapes of our motherland when I retire."
Gu Ye had never been so afraid of death. Before meeting Bao Ni, he thought that life and death didn't matter. He thought it was good to live gloriously and die nobly.
But now he's scared and reluctant to let go; he's got something to hold him back.
"Okay, remember what you said. You must live well no matter what. Your life no longer belongs to you, it belongs to me."
Bonnie vaguely knew that Gu Ye might be going south, but she didn't know when. She couldn't ask, and wouldn't ask, so as not to worry each other.
"Remember, Gu Ye's life belongs to Lin Baoni, so cherish it."
The two didn't say anything more. Gu Ye started stewing the fish, and Bao Ni assisted him. However, there was a different emotion in their eyes.
