At the crossroads, Bonnie and Chen Lili parted ways and went their separate ways home.
"Mom, why didn't you tell us that Dad went south?"
Liu Jiu looked at her mother, who had lost a lot of weight, and felt a pang of heartache. She was bearing so much all by herself, and they knew nothing about it.
“What’s the point of telling you this if it only adds to your worries and anxieties? Mom hopes you can grow up carefree. When Mom gets old, she won’t be able to help anymore.”
Bonnie's words brought tears to the children's eyes. For the first time, they realized that their parents would grow old and get sick. The memory of their mother, weak and feverish, before the New Year filled them with anxiety.
"Mom, you and Dad will grow old slowly. We will grow up quickly, and then we will become your support, just like we relied on you when we were little."
Sanqi suddenly hugged his mother's waist, wishing time would slow down.
"Silly children, your father and I are still very young, in the prime of our lives. You don't need to rush to grow up. We can still live for many more years, and we don't want to be driven old by you!"
Bonnie patted Sanqi's head. The children are growing up so fast. Liujiu is almost as tall as her mother now, and Sanqi is already past her shoulder.
They only see their children growing up, not themselves getting old!
Bonnie calmed the children down and then happily rummaged through drawers and closets looking for clothes.
Gu Ye left in winter, and now spring has returned, so it's time to find spring clothes.
Gu Ye is back, and Bao Ni's mood is as bright as the sunshine outside.
Gu Ye returned home on the third day. Bao Ni and the others were still at school, and no one was home.
Gu Ye returned to his long-lost home and felt at peace.
Looking at the cushions on the sofa, with his wife's large stitches on them, they looked so familiar and comforting.
His spring clothes were hanging out of the closet in the bedroom. He took out a set and went to wash up. He had already shave his hair back to his usual short haircut while he was in the army.
After taking a shower in the bathroom, Gu Ye shaved, washed his dirty clothes, and hung them up to dry.
I went to the kitchen, then into the bedroom, took some money from where my wife kept her change, and went to the market to buy groceries for dinner.
In the courtyard, watching Gu Ye's departing figure carrying a vegetable basket, everyone began to envy Lin Baoni. Gu Ye, such a high-ranking official, personally bought groceries, cooked, and did laundry. It was said that Lin Baoni had never cooked in all the years she had been married.
Lin Baoni wants to say that you're exaggerating. She just can't cook, but she can steam big steamed buns perfectly and has amazing knife skills.
Comparisons are odious; think about your own husbands—they may not be high-ranking officials, but they wield considerable power.
Once he gets home, he becomes a tyrant, expecting to be served food and clothes without lifting a finger. He'd even step over an oil bottle without bending down to help, just yelling, "The oil bottle's fallen over!" as if it had nothing to do with him.
Bonnie had no idea that because of Gu Ye, she was being nagged again in the family compound, and she kept sneezing.
"Bonnie, you're being nagged again? Do you think they miss you or are they scolding you?"
Lan Hua watched as Bonnie sneezed in a series of sneezes, her nose and eyes running.
"Sigh, who knows? How come someone as low-key as me always gets into so much trouble?"
Bonnie is also helpless. She lives a very low-key life, but people always drag her out for a few rounds.
"Lin Baoni, do you not understand what it means to be low-key? What you've done can be considered low-key? Last time the neighborhood committee caused you trouble, now the neighborhood committee of the residential compound has been disbanded."
"When did this happen? Who told you that? It would be good if they really disbanded. What use are they? They didn't do anything worthwhile, but they're good at scheming and backstabbing. What's the point of keeping them around?"
Bonnie never expected that their voices would be heard and that these people who were occupying positions without doing their jobs would actually be dealt with.
"They've disbanded. I heard it from my aunt."
Bonnie knew that Lan Hua's uncle was a military commander; otherwise, would she have been able to crane her neck like a little hen and bump her head all over at the beginning?
"I'm telling the truth, their existence is really unnecessary."
Those who wave the banner of serving the people but do nothing of substance are doomed to fail sooner or later.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Bonnie got busy again, and Orchid still had a lot to do. She now knew that her uncle wasn't omnipotent, and if she didn't perform well and lost this job, she would truly have no chance again.
Many things are gradually getting back on track. The scandalous affair that caused such a stir a while ago has seen those who were supposed to be punished get punished, and those who were supposed to be punished get punished.
No matter what your father does, it won't work anymore.
When Bonnie arrived home with the groceries that evening, the kitchen was already filled with delicious aromas; Gu Ye had returned.
"Honey, you're back? I still have two dishes to cook, I'll cook them when the kids get home."
Gu Ye, dressed in the clothes prepared by Bao Ni, walked out of the kitchen looking smart and energetic.
"Gu Ye, are you hurt?"
Bonnie only cared about this; she was worried that Gu Ye was keeping it from her. "There were no serious injuries, just a scratch from a stray bullet, but it's all healed."
"Really, I'm not lying. Didn't you see I didn't lose weight this time? I actually gained a few pounds! I can't tell you the specifics, but everyone I took out came back, except for one person who had a minor injury—a broken arm."
Gu Ye, fearing that Bao Ni wouldn't believe him, began to unbutton his clothes.
"Come back, kid! Why are you unbuttoning your clothes?"
"Honey, what are you thinking? I just wanted you to check so I'm really not hurt. I'm quite worried, but we have to wait until the kids are asleep tonight!"
