The basketball event has come to an end, allowing the children who have been under immense pressure to relax briefly, recharge, and keep going. The revolution is not yet complete, comrades still need to work hard.
Stepping off the basketball court, the cold wind instantly cooled everyone's earlier enthusiasm, and they all became more alert.
"Liu Jiu, you guys should come back quickly, it's too cold."
Mu Nanfang thought that although Liu Jiu's dress looked nice today, it wasn't very warm.
"I'm going back now. It's not that cold. I'm wearing a big cotton-padded coat outside."
Liu Jiu tightened her scarf, said goodbye to Mu Nanfang, and walked home with Xuan Yu and the others.
After watching Liu Jiu leave, Mu Nanfang called to Mu Jiaojiao, urging her to hurry home as well, as it was too cold.
"Hey buddy, slow down, I can't keep up with you."
"This shows that you don't exercise regularly. You get out of breath after walking just a few steps. In the time you would have spent fooling around with Zhao Man, you could have done a few push-ups."
Although Mu Nanfang didn't spoil Mu Jiaojiao, he didn't completely ignore her either. As he spoke, he slowed his pace. His younger sister was too naive and silly.
"I understand. Sister Xiaoman didn't talk to me after that. She has many friends."
Mu Jiaojiao didn't dare say too much, afraid that her brother would criticize her again. However, she didn't expect that the girl who beat her brother down was completely different from what she had imagined.
"Hey bro, is that Gu Yun Chu the girl who defeated you?"
Mu Jiaojiao couldn't help but ask her brother for confirmation.
"Um."
"I didn't expect her to be so cute, she doesn't look like someone who can fight at all. And she's not that dark-skinned either."
Mu Jiaojiao continued talking to herself, feeling that Zhao Man's information source was incorrect.
"What are you all thinking about all day long? Black and white, are they really that important? Shouldn't your top priority be your health and studying hard?"
Mu Nanfang looked at his younger sister, who was a year younger than Liu Jiu, and wondered what was going on in his mind all day long.
"Young man, you don't understand girls. What we care about most is not health, but beauty."
Mu Jiaojiao felt that her brother didn't understand girls and knew nothing.
The brother and sister chatted all the way home. Mu Nanfang went back to his room, feeling that Mu Jiaojiao's thinking was off. He'd talk to his parents tomorrow about it; was it really okay for the little girl to be so concerned about her appearance?
The six of them continued their daily lives of studying and exercising, and nothing changed because of the gathering.
Every morning exercise is a must, without fail. This is the only chance Mu Nanfang can see Liu Jiu every day, because at other times, Liu Jiu and the others are mostly studying, and he himself has one thing or another to do.
Occasionally, they would play a game of basketball together on the court in the evening.
As the Lunar New Year approached and everyone was busy preparing for the holiday, an explosive piece of news quickly spread throughout the entire residential compound.
"Did you know? Last night, the police arrested a group of dancers."
"Really? Why are they targeting dancers? Aren't there a lot of people dancing these days, the kind where men and women are hugging and embracing?"
"Yes, that's the kind of person they arrested, it seems like something happened."
"They should have been arrested long ago. A group of men and women dancing together like that is immoral and indecent!"
...
Bonnie went out to buy New Year's goods with Sister Xiang in the morning, and the whole courtyard was filled with gossip.
"What's going on? What happened?"
Bonnie and Sister Xiang were completely bewildered. They lived in a relatively remote area, and many things were almost completely forgotten by the time they reached them.
"Oh my, you guys don't know, this news spread first thing this morning. The police arrested a group of dancers, including some from our compound."
An older woman, hearing Bonnie's questioning voice, enthusiastically began to tell her what she had overheard.
"Dancing? What kind of dancing?"
Bonnie was completely bewildered. Dancing wasn't allowed? She hadn't heard of that!
"What do you mean by ballroom dancing? It's the kind where a man and a woman hug each other around the waist and neck. It's so shameless, they deserved to be caught."
"Exactly, I heard there are still several unmarried girls like that. My goodness, how are they going to find husbands? What family would want someone dancing with a man like that?"
"That's right, no good family would want her."
...
The group went off-topic, talking about how indecent their dancing was and how they'd never find a husband.
Bonnie was confused, but the gist of it was that some men and women were dancing together and were arrested by the police.
Bonnie felt that things couldn't be that simple. A simple dance at night wouldn't cause such a commotion; there must be something else going on. She decided to ask her boyfriend Ye Ge if he knew anything about it that night.
Bonnie and Sister Xiang left the group of middle-aged women who were talking animatedly; their version of events had been passed around too many times and was too distorted.
When we arrived at the small market, people were also talking about these things. What they were saying was similar to what the older women in the compound were saying; it was all hearsay, and no one really knew the truth.
Bonnie was curious, but she didn't join their discussion. She focused on buying New Year's goods, as there would be many people celebrating the New Year this year, and she needed to prepare more.
"Sister Xiang, that's enough. Let's go back. We can come back tomorrow to see if there's anything new."
Bonnie told Xiang Jie to head back; they'd almost finished buying everything.
"Okay, I think that's enough. We won't have room for any more."
Sister Xiang thought about all the things she had already bought for the family; there were quite a lot.
When Bonnie returned to the compound, there were still small groups of people discussing it. Bonnie thought their lively discussion was just idle chatter; hardly anyone knew the specifics.
Bonnie's curiosity was piqued. She missed the days when Sister-in-law Gu was around, and she could know the ins and outs of everything immediately. She didn't have that ability, so she could only wait for her brother Ye to come back and ask him.
