Because of an English-language movie, Liu Jiu and San Qi became famous in the military compound, and everyone knew that the Gu family's children were outstanding.
This doesn't affect Liu Jiu and San Qi much. At most, they'll run into one or two older grandmothers with their grandchildren on their way to and from school, hoping Liu Jiu and San Qi will pat their children's heads in the hopes that their children will become smarter.
At times like this, Gu Xuanyi would lower his head and suppress his laughter; thankfully, he wasn't there that day.
"Gu Xuanyi, if you want to laugh, then laugh openly. I promise I won't beat you to death."
Liu Jiu was getting annoyed. It had been over a month, and the hype still hadn't died down. She didn't like being treated like a mascot; tomorrow, she was going to ride her bicycle to and from school.
"Okay, okay, I won't laugh anymore, haha... I'm sorry, Liu Jiu, I just couldn't hold it in anymore. Even if you kill me, let me laugh enough first."
I can't be bothered with you.
Liu Jiu strode forward, leaving Gu Xuanyi and his laughter behind.
What's wrong with my daughter?
When Gu Ye saw Liu Jiu enter the house with a displeased expression, he sensed that something big had happened.
"Dad, buy me a bicycle. I want to ride it to and from school. I don't want to pat a little brat on the head anymore."
"We haven't even gotten over it yet, and these old ladies are so superstitious! No way, I'll go to the logistics department tomorrow and tell them to take care of this. Aren't they instilling the idea of getting something for nothing in the children?"
Gu Ye didn't expect this matter to last so long. He had been away on a business trip and had only been back for a few days.
"Yes, let their leaders keep an eye on them. Why do they always think they can get something for nothing?"
Sanqi was also annoyed. It wasn't for any other reason than that he didn't like patting those little brats on the head. They were all running around sweating and covered in dust, so dirty that he wanted to wash his hands every time he finished patting them.
"Alright, I'll go with them tomorrow, by tricycle. They'll understand in a few days. If you go to the military for something this simple, they'll think you're just showing off!"
Bonnie stopped the grandfathers and children, telling them to wash their hands. Gu Xuanyi returned laughing all the way, though his stomach ached. When Liu Jiu turned around, he instinctively flinched.
The next day, Bonnie left with her three children on a tricycle, quickly leaving the residential compound without being spotted by the group of older women.
After a few times, whether they realized that Liu Jiu and the others didn't want to pat the children's heads anymore or someone in their family said something, the matter passed and Liu Jiu and the others went back to going to and from school on their own.
Liu Jiu and the others resumed their English studies at the end of May, and Teacher Zhai returned.
Actually, most of the time now, Liu and Jiu read the original English books on their own, and only ask Teacher Zhai questions when they don't understand something. Sanqi's French is already quite good; she can have simple French conversations with Teacher Zhai.
The children had grown accustomed to learning from Teacher Zhai, and Teacher Zhai had grown accustomed to the children's company. Bonnie and Teacher Zhai had become like family; Teacher Zhai genuinely cared for and looked after her.
Especially after having chefs like Sister Xiang and Uncle, Teacher Zhai hardly cooks anymore. Sometimes she goes to Lin's Restaurant to eat, and sometimes Bao Ni calls her to come over for dinner.
Humans are emotional beings. Sincerity begets sincerity, and feelings naturally develop over time.
June passed and July arrived, with the college entrance examination just around the corner, and the atmosphere in the family compound became tense.
Liu Jiu could still occasionally see Lan Shengli on the training field, but Ma Zijun was fully focused on preparing for the college entrance examination and no longer appeared on the training field.
Bao Ni's family has no students taking the college entrance exam or the middle school entrance exam this year, so things are relatively relaxed. Especially after Xiang Jie was born, they don't have to worry about cooking anymore.
Although many people in the family compound made sarcastic remarks, thinking that Gu Ye, a junior division commander, was not at the level to be assigned domestic staff, yet he spent his own money to hire people, which was hedonistic.
But now we've entered a period of reform and opening up; it's not like those ten years when you could easily bring someone down with a fabricated charge. Bonnie didn't even give them a second glance. They were just envious and jealous, weren't they? Only mediocre people aren't envied!
Bonnie's family lived a happy life. Xiangjie had two days off each month, and she would usually go home on those days unless there was something urgent at home. Bonnie and the others would eat at Lin's Restaurant, and they would have the children come over in the afternoon to help with chores as payment for the meal. The main purpose was to train the children in interpersonal skills and how to handle different environments and situations.
Before we knew it, the college entrance exam was over, the middle school entrance exam was over, and summer vacation had begun.
Fortunately, Xuanyu passed his postgraduate entrance exam and will continue his studies in September. After the two brothers went on vacation, they packed their things and went south. They hadn't seen their parents for a year and missed them both very much.
Bonnie doesn't plan to go back to the island this year. Her parents and grandparents are all in good health, and Lin Bo and his wife have graduated and been assigned jobs.
Lin Bo went to the fleet base, Cao Wenli was assigned to the military hospital at the base, and her family compound was also allocated a small courtyard.
The couple brought their parents and grandparents to stay with them for a while, mainly to give them a check-up. Aside from the grandparents having some common age-related ailments, their parents were in good health.
Bonnie was relieved, mainly because Teacher Zhai had found part-time jobs for Liu Jiu and San Qi so they could practice their spoken English. Liu Jiu was taught English, and San Qi was taught both English and French—a perk offered to internal staff by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Although Liu Jiu and San Qi were very busy throughout the summer vacation, they had a fulfilling time.
By the end of July, the college entrance examination results were released, bringing joy to some and sorrow to others.
Ma Zijun was admitted to the military academy he wanted to attend, even though he was among the last few to be admitted. Getting in was still a stroke of luck.
Lan Shengli was also very lucky to be admitted to a local undergraduate university in Beijing. Although it wasn't a very prestigious university, he was quite satisfied with his studies in economics, which he loved.
